Heat Safety
Information (Important)

Note: The temperature derived from the heat index, although not
the actual temperature is what it feels like to the body. The body cools as if it at the heat index
temperature. Example: A temperature 88°F @ 75% Relative Humidity is equivalent
to 103°F. This means that the body cools
as if it was 103°F and about 30% Relative Humidity. The body’s ability to cool by perspiring and
evaporation is hampered because of the high amount of water already in the air.
This is the other danger at band camp next to heat. This is the main reason to get the band off
the field and inside shelter. It should be
noted there are a lot of very tall objects that could get struck in the
vicinity of the practice field. At the
back of the field are very large electrical towers and in the front are the
tall pine trees and a metallic directors scaffolding. Where heat can cause health problems and
possibly death of an individual, a bolt of lightning can kill many people in a
couple of micro seconds and you don’t need a full blown thunderstorm and rain
for this to happen.
