IT BLEW UP IN A CLOUD OF OZONE AND A HEARTY OHIO SLIVER
It lasted a good while and then suddenly went. Too bad as I liked to drive this thing.

It is a perpetual search to find good or great motors for use in slot cars. I think we have a very good one here and at a very good price. The seller is Battery Space, but their registered trademark is Powerizer. Months ago, don't ask me why I waited, two of these motors were purchased for testing. Up front, let me say they have not disappointed me. Money well spent.SIZE: The motor fits in any motor mount that takes a SlotIt Boxer or a Ninco NC-2/5/6 (FK-180) motor mount.
ARMATURE: The armature accepts the standard pinions. The shaft is long enough that it can replace most motors that the SlotIt Boxer will fit. The shaft is smooth and so I used a little loctite on the pinion just in case.
CAN: As is obvious from the picture the motor has a cooling hole on the brush end of the can. The brushes can be seen through this opening. They appear to be carbon brushes. This opening allows the commutator to be cleaned, which is an impossibility with many FK-180 type motors. This also allows those who want to do the water bath break-in to do so and get the water easily out of the can. The lubricating of the bearings is now possible on both ends of the motor.
RATING: Do we really pay attention to this? I usually look for a medium voltage motor (6-9 volts) to get the type of RPMs I want and still have adequate torque. They rate it at 7.2 volts DC and claim it turns 24000 RPMs at that voltage! My first concern was whether or not it would hold together. The old saying applies - "Bolt the #%^@# together, it has got to do something, even if it is burn." I ran it at 15 volts and it did not hand grenade, burn, or even get really hot. There is a certain level of disappointment when this does not happen, but then common sense kicks in.
CAR & GEARING: Considering the potential RPMS this thing supposedly cranks out, it was a wise move to gear it stiff. The test car would be my mule car which is a brutalized SlotIt Silk Cut Jaguar that I bought from another local sloter. This car had an anemic NC-2 and ran fine on my home track with a 10.5 foot straight, but would top out about half way down the commercial track's front straight. The crown gear was a 30 tooth SlotIt and the pinion an 8 tooth Fly. That gave a ratio of 3.75:1 which is as stiff as I could make it. Because of the power of this motor it had to be glued in with hot glue.
TRACK TESTING: The car ran fine on my home track and seemed to provide about the same driving experience as I had been having with the NC-2. When I went to the 118' high speed road course (Monza) at Fastlane Hobbies I was in for a surprise. The motor did not top out on their main straight and was impressively fast and had good braking. During the 15 minutes of running it did not get hot. The times on the car dropped by over a second as the old motor was not up to this type of track. With the 3.75:1 gearing it ran well on the infield and was more mannerly than the ScaleAuto "red motor." Give me this motor any day over a "red motor" or any ScaleAuto motor for that matter.
Dyno Tom, one of the local gurus, kept asking me for one. When I came home it was put it in my MRRC Toyota Gt-1 which is the track record holder at Fastlane. It will get tested next week at Fastlane and an update will be posted. Also, I found a Spirit 31 tooth crown gear in the parts bin and it will be tested to see if that will make it top out.
Originally, two of these motors were purchased and the second motor has the same feel and characteristics as the first. Sometimes motors vary from example to example but not here.
PRICE: As you can see this is an affordable motor. It costs more than what we are used to for surplus, but a lot less than Ninco and SlotIt charges. The look and feel of this motor says quality.
AVAILABILITY: As of the writing of this review it is available. As with all surplus type motors we can't be sure how long these will be available.
1-4 $4.95 (Per Item) 5-20 $4.70 (Per Item) 21-50 $4.46 (Per Item) 51-100 $4.21 (Per Item) CONCLUSION: Buy it and try it. It is cheaper than any SlotIT or Ninco motor of the same configuration and outperforms in my opinion both of those on the tracks I run. Rummage through the site (http://www.batteryspace.com/) as they have other stuff that was of interest to me, but I am not called the scavenger for nothing. I more than like this motor
1All tests are done without traction magnets as that is how I prefer to run and what I am interested in. My home track has a 1.5 amp power supply with a maximum output of 15 volts. Fastlane Hobbies has 10 amp power supplies at 14 volts.
