Well, this little item was designed
for an old cabin cruiser owned by a friend of mine. He wanted to
renovate some of the living spaces on his boat and had a corner to deal
with and this is what he and I came up with. Cabinet grade birch
3/4" plywood, veneered with Teak. The top of the backrest was veneered
with 1/4" solid teak, resawn on an old 14" Delta Bandsaw and a homemade
guide. I also had to bend some solid teak for the armrest.
I made a steam chamber from a four foot section of three wall stove pipe.
The inlay that you see above was installed in the
corner at the top of the backrest. It was made of 1/4" black walnut
and inlayed between two bookmatched pieces of teak. Sanding was difficult,
as the two woods are of different hardness, so out came the good ole' cabinet
scraper. I just love a good scraper.
Finish was straight marine grade varnish, the same
as used on deck at the handrails and such. I did reduce the first
two coats to get some good penetration and then two more full coats.
It's thick. White upholstered cushions were added. They had
a cute little anchor pattern on them. The cushions are completely
removable to access storage compartments under each cushion.
