Music of AfricaProf. Robert W. Templeman Special Topics: 16-HILT-630-002Welcome to the Music of Africa home page. I designed this course to introduce undergraduate and graduate students to a variety of peoples and musics from South, West, North, East, and Central Africa. As we study specific, local examples of rural-traditional and urban popular music in terms of performance practice, style, and aesthetics, we will also critically examine issues surrounding gender, religion, nationalism, the roles and statuses of musicians in society, social clubs, and professionalism.
