Arleen's Stained Glass

My name is Arleen Fields and I have been doing stained glass since 1996 when I took a class at Tiffany Art Glass Gallery in Cincinnati, OH.  I started out in a corner of my basement, and since then I have just about taken over the whole basement.  I took a class in lampworking in April 1999 and recently started fusing.

This is the panel that I made when I took the stained glass class.

This is a panel that I made shortly after taking the class.  I used English Muffle glass.

Then on to stepping stones.  I started out making stepping stones using concrete, but now I use DiamondCrete.  It is much easier to mix and it dries in about an hour.  With concrete, you have to let the stone dry a couple of days.  I wear latex gloves and mix the DiamondCrete by hand.  You get a really smooth surface and you can mix about any color that you want.

Here are some photos of fusing. Fusing is taking compatible glass and firing it in a kiln (about 1500 degrees) until the pieces melt together.  My friend made the bezel setting for one of the "Picasso" inspired fused glass pieces.  Recently, I have been working with dichroic glass.  Thin layers of metallic oxides are
deposited upon the surface of the glass in a high temperature, vacuum furnace.
Dichroic coatings transmit certain wavelengths of light, while reflecting others.  Dichroic glass costs about $20.00 for a 4" x 4" square.

This is a photo of a necklace that I made using precious metal clay and a pendant with dichroic glass.  The design is etched onto the dichroic glass then fused to another piece of glass.  Precious Metal Clay feels like potters clay, but when you fire it in a kiln  (1650 degrees for 2 hours), it transforms into metal.  Silver particles are suspended in a binder that burns out in the kiln.
