We just happened upon the Dead Lakes from an overpass. The scene was impressive, so we returned for a few days along the lake at campground in rustic Wewahitchka. The winding lake was formed naturally, when the Apalachicola River cut off the flow of the Chipola river, drowning the cypress in the river bottom. I don't exactly understand the hydrology here, but that's what the sign said.
