The cell membrane, a phospholipid bilayer, (grey) is shown. Phosphatidyl serine (red) is normally found on the inner surface of the membrane. During apoptosis, it is flipped to the outside of the membrane. This acts as a signal for macrophages, which engulf and digest the cell.
