JV go 3 - 1 in the Central KY JV
Tournament
Despite being shunned by one half of the
tournament, the Brossart JV proved they belonged in the Central Kentucky JV
tournament by defeating North Oldham, Tates Creek, and Dunbar,
before falling to Oldham County in the bracket final. Thanks to an
invitation from the Franklin County side of the tournament, our string of 8
consecutive appearances in the tournament remained intact, and coach Tavel's Mustangs
came out as the bracket runner-up, playing three tough games over a five
hour time span Saturday. A special thanks to Dylan Dierig for filling in
admirably at midfield for the cruise bound Nick Birkenhauer. What could be
more fun than sweating out three games in the sun and 80+ degree heat in
Frankfort, KY, taking PKs in a shootout, and having your hamstring all
knotted up in the middle of a tight game?
Watching from the team's sideline on Saturday
unable to participate was standout freshmen defender Jared Anderson, out due
to injury.
Friday 10/10
Brossart 1 - North Oldham 0
A second half goal tapped in by David Braun was
set up nicely by Craig Todd for the game's only score that proved to be
enough.
Saturday 10/11
Game 1
Brossart 3, Tates Creek 2 - Shootout following a
2-2 tie in regulation
An early defensive foul call in the box at the
10 minute mark resulted in a penalty kick for Tates Creek and the early 1-0
lead. The Mustangs appeared off their game a little, falling behind for the
first time all season, and struggling to match "Creek's" counters. The half
ended 1 - 0.
A second goal was added by Tates Creek at about
8 minutes into the second half, and it remained to be seen how we would
respond. The defense dug in, led by the usual cast of Batsche, Beckerich,
and Crowley, well supported by their teammates, and the constant mix of
Mustang soccer talent at midfield and striker. It was the freshmen duo of
Brett Evans and Todd Kramer teaming up at about 14 minutes on a run by
Evans, who sent a ball in front of Kramer who deposited the ball into the
net, now 2 -1, and half a period still to go. The Tates Creek defense
tightened, and despite valiant efforts by the offense, time ran down under
two minutes. As the ball was cleared behind the Tates Creek goal, one
minute remained for "The Corner Kick" of 2008. Mefford sent the
ball in high and just over the outstrectched hand of the Tates Creek
keeper, far side of the net, where a shot blasted off a defender's chest and
fell straight down. With all available Mustang players sent up by coach
Tavel, Tyler Batsche poked the ball through and past the keeper for the
equalizer, and 2 - 2 score in the game's final seconds. An unofficial 12th
man assist was granted by the Brossart faithful in attendance to the
"reporter" turned ball-boy in green and white who, in near desperation,
fetched the game ball from the wooded slope behind the goal to keep play
alive and give Mefford time to set up his perfectly placed volley out in
front of the net. Trust me, the briars and burrs were worth the end
result! All credit to the entire team and coach who wouldn't quit in this
one, to earn a last minute tie and take the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, two stellar stops were made by
Mustang keeper Eric Lemaster, on the 2nd and 4th kicks, while all four
Mustang kickers hit net. Braun, Mefford, Todd, and Enzweiler made their
kicks to knock off Tates Creek in a 4-2 margin, fifth kick not needed.
Final score goes down as 3-2 by shootout.
Game 2
Brossart 1 - Dunbar 0 by shootout.
Not a lot of time following the previous
game and although Dunbar appeared outmanned by the Brossart squad, the score
ended in a 0-0 tie, and we went to a second consecutive shootout. Waiting
to see which five would emerge to take the kicks, you had to wonder how both
teams could muster the strength to accurately decide the outcome on penalty
kicks. Another outstanding stop by Lemaster going to his right
denied Dunbar's third kicker, and the game was decided with all five
Brossart kickers striking net, against four for the opponent. Kicks made by
Braun, Mefford, Todd, Enzweiler, and Dierig. Brossart wins 1 - 0 by
shootout.
Game 3
Oldham County 2 - Brossart 1
The third game of the day looked to be quite
painful for several of the boys in green, and to Oldham's credit, their
attack found bursts of energy that put frequent pressure on our defense. A
first half goal by Oldham left the score 1 - 0 at halftime. Displaying a
flurry of our own, the Mustangs got a goal in the first minute of the second
half when Clay took a ball from Braun, and worked it into the center for
Craig Todd to bury past the goalie and knot the score at 1-1. But late in
the half, an excellent move on a run by Oldham resulted in a wide side goal
that put the score at 2-1 with about 10 minutes to go. Some great looks
down the stretch with the players drawing on whatever they had left, but no
goal to show for it. The Mustang JV season ends with the Franklin County
Tournament Second Place trophy, and all tournament honors for Lemaster,
Batsche, and Eric Enzweiler. Congratulations team on a spectacular 18-1
season!
