Brossart 3                     CovCath 2
click here to see the Brossart/Cov. Cath game pictures

What a nail biter! The Mustangs came out somewhat tentative and CovCath was passing the ball well. The Mustangs started to pick up momentum and the players did an excellent job pushing up on the offensive end. The first goal was scored by CovCath just before intermission. The ball was initially called off sides by the official; the ball was put back into play, the flag lowered and CovCath scored.

The trailing Mustangs came out the second half with more determination. AJ Wilson with a move, AJ stated was taught by Peter Mikhail (CovCath player), nutmaged one of the CovCath defenders and ripped the ball low and hard to the corner of the goal. Brossart scored their second goal by Hansman who did an excellent job tonight playing defense as well as contributing offensively. The assist was a header from Uebel. CovCath tied up the game with less than three minutes to go off of a corner kick. Cooper had his work cut out for him this evening, I lost track of all his saves. Stadtmiller showed great poise as a freshman and did an excellent job back on defense as well as the other defenders.

The rain started to come down harder and hypothermia was setting in for the fans, at least the old ones like me! The final goal came in the second overtime period by Josh Kidney. He settled the ball and with a quick turn out-witted the defender and fired the ball with his left foot. As many times as we have hit the post and crossbar this season we were due to finally have one get through. Great job Josh, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

I know I left out many names; it was truly a team effort tonight. There were many St. Henry boys in attendance as well as some other schools. The boys should be very proud, we not only showed we can come back quickly from a goal down, with a good opponent, we also can win on anyone’s home field.

Mustangs fall to Highlands 1-0 in District Final

It seemed like “Freezer Bowl II” as the 19th District Final was played at Campbell County High School.  As the sun dropped, the temperature quickly dropped as well into the 30’s.  Unfortunately, the play on the field seemed a little cold also with both teams playing a little tight to start the game.

The first half was dominated by the defenses of both sides with very few sustained drives or any threatening shots.  Most of Highland’s runs were stopped by Matt Lloyd and Kyle Kramer and turned back up field before any shots were taken.  When they did get off a shot, Troy Cooper was there to make the play.

In the second half, the pace picked up quite a bit.  Several nice runs for both teams began to open up the defenses, giving both teams several shots on goal.  Troy Cooper had to make a couple of diving saves to keep the Bluebirds from scoring during this stretch.  About midway through the half, Highlands advanced the ball to the Brossart side of the field where Teddy Connelly took a pass and dribbled past three Brossart defenders to finish with a quick punch to the left side of the goal.  The intensity really increased at this point with bodies flying all over the field; the Refs were letting them play.  The Mustangs continued to increase the pressure with one run after another but could not get one into the net.  Time eventually ran out, giving Highlands the 1-0 victory.

Congratulations to Troy Cooper, Matt Lloyd and Jimmy Uebel who were selected to the 19th District All Tournament Team.  Although a tough loss, in a hard fought game, the Brossart Mustangs advance to the Regional Tournament next week where they will try to move on to the State Playoffs.  Good luck Mustangs!

Wilson Varsity Report

The Mustangs beat Campbell Co. on the home field Tuesday night. The game played out like everyone thought... a tough game with all the player putting everything on the line. Campbell Co. took the lead 1-0 and kept the lead into half time. Josh Kidney tied the game early in the 2nd half and A.J. Wilson scored on the free kick due to a CCHS penalty. The kick wasn't a penalty kick inside the box it was way out there.

The Mustangs move on to play Highlands on Thursday Night at 7pm at CCHS. Highlands took NCC into 2 overtimes to beat them 2-0. Great game by both teams. Congratulations to NCC on a great year.

Congratulations to Campbell County on a great season ! ! !

Both Brossart and Highlands move on to play in the Regional tournament. The winner of the Brossart/Highlands game will play Holy Cross and the loser will play Cov. Cath. Cov. Cath beat Holy Cross 2-0. The winner of the Regional tournament will move on to play in the sub-sectionals.

Mustangs 2 our Neighbor 1

Just like our last match the Camels came out strong. In the first minute of the game the Camels blasted a shot hitting the post. That was our wake-up call and I’m glad it came early. The Mustangs had their share of opportunities, seven shots on goal compared to the Camels five. Unfortunately with 7:25 left in the half the Camels scored.

The second half was very physical and both teams gave it their all. The Mustangs got on the board when Uebel, who was being pushed from all angles, managed to head the ball to Kidney. Kidney then brought the ball with great control to his feet and buried it past the goalie. The Mustangs second goal came from a penalty kick from Wilson that took a skip and entered the goal untouched. The Mustangs scored a third goal that was called back; it is still very unclear why?

The Camels were relentless and fought hard. Cooper held the Camels with some excellent saves. The Mustangs although battled and bruised persevered and brought home a Win. Congratulations Mustangs keep it rolling and remember ice and Advil!

Mustangs dominate Grant County winning easy 5-1.

Upon arrival to Grant Co. Middle School soccer field we saw JV players exiting cold, wet and covered in mud head to toe. It was senior night for Grant Co. and they seemed determined to get the game played. All the boys looked as if they were running in place hoping their cleats would grasp the muddy field.

The Mustangs first goal was scored at the 35 minute mark, in the first half, by Neltner. Kidney drilled a hard shot hitting the post reflecting back to Neltner who delivered a header. The Mustangs clearly dominated although we struggled finishing. Uebel, Wilson, Kidney, Bartlett and Kramer all had excellent shots on goal just falling short. The Mustangs second goal started with a corner by Wilson and punched in by Rust.

Our defense held strong the second half but had minimal action compared to recent weeks. The Mustangs continued to dominate showing patience and moving the ball well on the ground. Bartlett and Kramer did an excellent job creating many opportunities while keeping Grant Co. in a game of keep away. Our third goal came when Neltner cleaned up another deflected shot from Kidney. Grant Co. capitalized on a P.K. for their only goal of the game. Cooper made an excellent attempt deflecting the ball but it still managed to roll into the goal. Despite the field conditions the Mustangs continued to pass the ball well inside the 18. Kidney had our 4th goal with an assist by Schimidt. The fifth and final goal was a break away by Kidney who breezed by Grant Co. defense and passed the ball to Uebel who easily knocked it by the goalie. Good job Boys!

 Varsity Escapes With Tie

Mustangs 1 Wildcats 1

As it often happens in sports, our Brossart Mustangs came off the emotional high of their victory over the Highland Bluebirds this past Saturday night, playing a bit flat tonight against the Pendleton County Wildcats. The first half saw both teams struggling to muster any kind of strong offense. Our Mustangs seemed to be a bit frustrated with the smaller field which resulted in more packed in defenses and at times making it difficult to have clean breakaways or strong runs. The first half came to a rather sluggish end and a 0-0 score.
The second half started just as the first had been played, except 12 minutes into this half the Wildcats found a narrow seam on our right side and squeezed an unassisted goal in going up 1-0 on our Mustangs.  After this point it seems as the Pendleton County coach played his team in a “prevent defense” often seen in our other sport called Football. The Wildcats seemed content to play a strong defense and often utilized 8 men to do this. It was obvious they were going to settle for a 1-0 win or a 1-1 tie. With the Wildcats packed in defense and a smaller field, the inevitable happened. With approximately 5 minutes left in the game the Mustangs were rewarded with a free kick. A.J. Wilson struck a hard line drive into the crowded box in front of the goal, which deflected off the extended leg of a Wildcat defensive player, resulting in an own goal and giving the Mustangs a badly needed score. With the Wildcats content to allow the clock to run down, the last five minutes of the game saw the Mustangs dominate the control of the ball but were unable to score and had to settle for a 1-1 tie. The Mustangs escaped with this tie and avoided a late season loss.

The Varsity beat Highlands 4-0 in Saturday night's game. All 4 goals were in the first 20 minutes of the game. By beating Highlands, the Boys capture the number 1 seed  (3-0)in the 19th District Tournament. The 2nd seed is Highlands (2-1), followed by NCC (1-2), and Campbell Co. (0-3). After talking to Mel, we will play the 2nd game on 10/10/06 at Campbell Co. High School. More to follow.

Mustangs 6                                                    Camels 3

The game was a typical Camel/Mustang contest, both teams being very physical. The Mustangs scoring began with a corner kick from Aviles to the head of Uebel/Lloyd for a goal to even the score at 1-1. Uebel scored the second goal for the Mustangs with a nice drive and shot past the goalie.

The second half scoring began with a goal from the Camels to even the score. The Camels quickly scored their third goal to take the lead at 3-2. Brossart took back the lead with a penalty kick and goal, both by Kidney. Uebel made the score 5-3. The final score was by Brad Ostendorf for his first varsity goal. The game like the field was sloppy but the Mustangs came out with another win 6-3.

Congratulations to our seniors: Aviles, Cooper, Kidney, Lloyd, Hansman, Kramer, Schmidt, and Uebel on their great high school careers. I’m sure their leadership will carry us through the next 11 games to Georgetown.

Wilson Varsity Report

Brossart shut out our NCC Rivals 2-0.

Mustangs took their first shot by Uebel two minutes into the first half. Thereafter the game was somewhat sloppy and the Mustangs struggled moving the ball out of the Breds’ territory. The Breds, as usual, brought their “A” game despite their record. N.C.C. had five shots on goal, Brossart six; number six was delivered to the back of the net. The sequence was sketchy; Wilson sent the ball from the left corner which touched many Mustangs finding Kidney who buried it low and hard.

The Mustangs played the second half much better which seems to becoming a theme. The team kept the ball on the ground more finding open teammates. Patterson had an opportunity just missing goal, bouncing off the post. Our second goal came when Kidney shot the ball deflecting off the outstretched hand of the Breds’ goalie. Neltner always ready to clean up finished off the shot with a hard strike. Coach Goller subbed well giving the boys short breaks and wearing down the Breds. Becherich handled the Breds’ physical game and showed resilience with every blow. Next district game this Saturday at Highlands, come out and support the Mustangs!

The Mustangs beat South Oldham in their own tournament to become the Champions. Josh Kidney and Kevin Rust scored the goals for the Mustangs. South Oldham scored on a Penalty Kick after being fouled in the box. South Oldham has been ranked #17 in the state in previous rankings. The Mustangs beat some very good teams in this tournament. Congratulations on a great tournament. I'll work on the pictures on Sunday and post the Wilson report when I get it. Have a great weekend.

Mustangs bring home another tournament victory.

The Mustangs played the championship game of the South Oldham tournament against the host team Dragons. The first half started slow with both teams playing tentative. With 31 minutes to go in the half, Cooper had a good save from a hard shot by South Oldham. Ten minutes later Kidney had a throw in, to the head of Uebel that went slightly over the goal. Neltner also threaded a nice pass between defenders to Uebel but the shot went high. With the seconds ticking down in the half the Dragons had a great scoring opportunity. Cooper stopped the first shot drilled at him but the ball bounced out in front of the goal; the half ended just before the Dragons tapped the rebound into the goal. Shots taken were equal in the first half, five each, and the score was 0-0.

The Mustangs came out more aggressive in the second half. Brossart took twice as many shots than South Oldham. Brossart scored their first goal with an assist from Schmidt who found Kidney open at the eighteen. Kidney out maneuvered the opponent and took a quick shot and buried into the net. The second goal started with an assist from Uebel, who found Rust streaking down the right side and crushed the ball into the left corner of the net for his first Varsity goal. (South Oldham scored their goal on a penalty kick to make the final score 2-1.)

Hansman continues to impress by heading and stopping the ball in crowded and dangerous territory.  Bechridge is becoming an offensive weapon with his strong throw-ins. The midfielders are controlling the ball and winning their portion of the field.  Cooper had some spectacular saves in the first and second half of the game to help the Mustangs come home with another tournament victory! Congratulations Mustangs! All tournament team included Lloyd, Kidney and Wilson (and Cooper). Good luck with the upcoming district game beginning Tuesday with NCC.

Mustangs shut out #1 DuPont Manual Rams 2-0

The game started off quickly with the first shot taken by the Rams in the first minute of the game. The Rams passed the ball well but were not contenders for Lloyd and Kramer this night. They both had numerous steals and played very aggressive challenging every ball. Our midfielders did a good job pushing up leaving the Rams’ defenders not sure who to mark.

Half way into the first half the score remained 0-0. Hansman and Beckerich won nearly all defensive headers; Moore also played well despite an injured foot. Our underclassmen stepped up and were unscathed playing against the #1 team in the state. The first half ended with the Mustangs having seven shots on goal to the Rams’ six, with no goals scored.

The second half started off much like the first. Lloyd and Kramer dominated pressuring the opponent. Our defense held strong with Cooper spoiling us with his dependability. The score remained 0-0 until the last three minutes of the game when Beckerich had a long throw in timed perfectly by Uebel who headed the ball into the corner of the net for—Goal #1.  The tension was high with less than two minutes left to shut out the Rams. The Mustangs stepped it up, playing tough to try and win every ball. Our second goal came when Lloyd made a cross from the left corner; the ball touched many Mustangs ending on the strong foot of Kidney who buried it in the net for—Goal #2.

The Manual Rams were an excellent opponent; we wish them luck in the Consolation Finals. Congratulations to the Mustangs, let’s win our second tournament of the season. Championship game scheduled for Saturday @ 7:30, South Oldham High School.

Game pictures

Mustangs show determination and win with Penalty Kicks.

The first game of the South Oldham Invitational was played against the Providence Pioneers of Indiana. The game was played on the fast artificial turf at South Oldham High.

The Mustangs had several good scoring opportunities in the 1st half. Beckerich had a nice throw in to Uebel, who headed to Kidney for a nice shot that went wide. Wilson’s corner kick to the head of Lloyd went over the goal.

The Pioneers played a very physical game. Uebel and Wilson both came out of the game dazed because of some hard hits from the opponent. The Mustangs were unable to clear the ball from their defensive end leading to the first goal of the game by Providence at the 20 minute mark. Brossart evened the score with a nice assist from Lloyd to Kidney who drilled the ball by the goalie. With a minute left in the half the ball slowly bounced toward the Providence goalie. Aviles charged after the ball causing the Providence goalie to boot it into Aviles, causing the ball to ricochet back for the Mustangs 2nd goal.

Brossart also had several good scoring opportunities in the 2nd half but were unable to score. The outside Midfielders were doing a good job of crossing the ball and the Mustangs were using the entire field.

Providence scored their second goal with 27 minutes left in the game. Kramer and Hansman cleared the ball and made some good runs to help prevent the Pioneers from scoring again. Cooper made some outstanding saves late in the game to keep the score tied.

Penalty kicks would decide the game: Kidney, Aviles, Wilson, Uebel and Hansman each drilled their p.k.’s. Cooper stopped one of the Pioneers p.k.’s and Mustangs came away with the win!

It was good to see the Mustangs come back and win after being down early in the game against a good opponent. The Mustangs are half way through the regular season and are showing improvement with every turn. Good Luck on Thursday!

Mustangs fall to the Crusaders 0-1

The first half started out ugly. The Mustangs struggled winning their 50/50 balls and the Crusaders were passing the ball well. We were not out skilled, nor lacked in talent, just out played. The Crusaders had 14 shots to our two in the first half. Our defense did well holding the Crusaders off. There were many close calls but the score was 0-0 at the half.

The second half the Mustangs regrouped and came out strong. We matched their game and shots on goal 7/7. The Crusaders capitalized on a series of passes ending with the Crusaders left wing who just squeezed one in. Despite the Crusaders goal the Mustangs played relentlessly and with heart. The Crusaders started to unravel and were losing some strength. We had many opportunities to tie up the score, just falling short.

Although we did not bring home a “W” there were some highlights to our play. Cooper was clearly invaluable and protected our goal fearlessly. Lloyd and Wilson also played well covering the midfield with aggressive play and solid passing. It was a difficult loss but one we can learn from. Challenging teams like the Crusaders will help our future games and hopefully a rematch that we will be more than ready for!

 Next stop Providence—Go Mustangs!

Mustangs keep it rolling with a win over Calvary Cougars 6-1

Game Pictures...click here

Another win for the Mustangs! Coach Goller mixed things up due to injuries and rest. We showed how versatile we can be and continued to play strong and dominate our opponent. We more than doubled our opponent’s shots on goal.  Bartlett in the midfield played exceptionally well moving the ball with precision and creating excellent opportunities for our offense. Our first goal came from Kidney with an assist from Uebel. Uebel had the second goal and another assist to Kidney for goal #3.

The Cougars did have a break away that was nicely defended by the outstretched hand of Cooper. Avils placed a perfect corner, just out of reach for the Cougar goalie. Uebel headed the ball for our fourth goal.

Coach Goller put in his reserves for the remainder of the game. The team continued to play strong giving the Mustangs another goal delivered by Manning. The final and sixth Mustang goal was made incidentally by a Calvary Cougar. With the clock winding down we allowed the Cougars to take away our shut out who popped one through our defense. Perhaps we relaxed a little too soon?

Overall the Mustangs played well and Coach Goller has them psyched and ready for St. Henry on Saturday. Come out and support the Mustangs at 11:00 a.m., this Saturday at St. Henry.

Varsity dominates over Villa 6-0

The game was a little sloppy, but the Mustangs got the job done! Less than 5 minutes into the game Aviles made a pretty pass to Wilson waiting patiently in the far outside corner, Wilson then made an easy pass to Uebel who buried it into the goal. The second goal started in the midfield with Wilson who lofted the ball to Uebel. Uebel headed the ball just short of the goal where Lloyd finished it with his own header.
The third goal started in the midfield with a nice pass from Kramer to Kidney who breezed by his defenders with a nicely placed shot. Our fourth goal touched many players in the box and ended up on the strong foot of Schmidt. Our final goal prior to the major exodus of players started again with Kramer in the midfield outside to Kidney who delivered a pretty pass to Uebel for his second goal of the game.
Coach Goller substituted his bench with a few remaining starters short of the second half. As usual they did not let us down. We still continued to dominate however struggled finishing. The shots were very random; Rust outside the 18 had a rocket that hit the post. Bartlett had several shots stopped short by Villa’s goalie. Stadtmiller also kept the Villa goalie busy. The final goal came from an assist by Stadtmiller to the foot of Webb who placed it perfectly in the corner.
Our defense was strong despite the injured Hansman and Moore, and the inexperience of Wilson as sweeper. The game was played clean with few fouls, no cards and good sportsmanship by both teams. I must give major Kudos to Villa’s keeper, despite the score it could have been much worse, he had some excellent saves.

Great job Mustangs!!

Mustangs 3, Holy Cross 0

Although the Mustangs came home with a W, it was not one of our better performances. We had 14 shots on goals whereas the Indians had 12. Thankfully we converted three of them into goals.

Our first goal was made by Schmidt, Uebel trapped the ball and made an excellent pass timed perfectly to Schmidt who was making a great run and buried the ball in the back of the net. That was the only highlight of the first half. The Indians defense all had big boots and cleared the ball well. This kept our defense and midfield very busy.

The second half picked up some momentum and frustration showed by the Indians, who received two yellow cards. The second goal started when Wilson trapped the ball in the midfield and caught Lloyd making a run, Lloyd  then crossed the ball and Uebel punched it in for a header. The third and final goal was delivered by Kidney with a cross from Aviles.

Next stop, Villa (in the All "A"), September 5th @ 5:00-Pendry. Go Mustangs!

Game Pictures

After bringing home the heavy hardware from the Boots and Butts Tournament of this past weekend and resting on their laurels of being voted the number sixth ranked team in the Commonwealth, the Mustang soccerjocks were knocked right off of Mustang Mountain on Tuesday night in Louisville when they were soundly ROCKED by the 13th ranked Trinity Shamrocks.  Throughout the first ten minutes of the game and throughout most of the evening, Mustang keeper Troy Cooper was under iege holding off shot after shot by the aggressive Shamrock strikers. Finally a Mason Smith shot hit paydirt and the Mustangs fell behind 1-0. From that point on they would be forced to play from behind on the artifical turf surface of the Harry Jansen Athletic Field.  Samuel Scales would add to the Mustangs pain, connecting on a second goal with 1:18 remaining in the first half, as the Mustangs would now be forced to play out of a deeper hole as the Shamrocks enjoyed a 2-0 lead at the intermission. Things failed to improve in the second half as Clayton Lyons applied the coup de grace with a third Shamrock goal at the 18:54 mark of the second half and for all intents and purposes this game was history. A meaningless goal with 48 seconds remaining in the contest made the final four for the home team and none for the Mustangs. The Mustangs made the return home up I-71 licking their wounds, vowing to regroup and build some momentum for the upcoming All Regional with a tune up this Thursday at Holy Cross. They may have been victimized in Louisville by a team hungry after losing their first game of the season at St. Henry 4-2 and were playing their first game of the season on home turf. We were treated to excellent performances by Rock freshmen Tsatleho Jane and Lepekola Seetane who were wizards with the ball, continuously setting up their teammates who barraged our keeper throughout the match. This was our first effort at a soccer broadcast, and since Coach Brian Goller is a superstitious guy, possibly our last, but I will say that it is an entirely different animal than calling a baseball, basketball, or football game. I was lucky to have two authorities on the beautiful game with me to provide the play-by-play and color for the broadcast.

Brossart Mustangs Boots and Butts Tournament Champions!!

The first game of the Hopkinsville Invitational Tournament was on Friday evening, Davies Co. was the opponent. The Mustangs lost to Davies Co. earlier this year in the Bluegrass games. This game would be entirely different. The Mustangs could play their game with the large field, unlike that at Bluegrass on a very short field, which did not fit our style and eliminated the help of our strong midfield.

From the beginning of the game the Mustangs challenged and won the majority of our 50/50 balls in addition to precise passing and constant pressure on the opponent. This was their best game of the season thus far. We defeated Davies Co. with a 2-0 shut out. Kidney scored both of our goals with assists from Uebel.

The second game was against Graves Co. The Mustangs came out slower and took sometime to get into the flow of the game. The scoring was started by a cross from Neltner to Uebel for a header. The 2nd half was started with a goal from Schmidt with an assist from Uebel. The 3rd and final goal was scored by Kidney on a penalty kick. Coach Goller substituted freely; to rest some players for the second game of the day and to give everyone a feel for the tournament.

The third and final game of the tournament was against the host team Hopkinsville. Both teams came out ready to play. The scoring began with a pass from Kidney to Uebel who buried it in the back of the net—Goal 1. Uebel also scored the second goal with an assist from Neltner. Due to yellow cards and cramping Coach Goller called up our dependable reserves again. They passed the ball well increasing the lead to 3-0 with a header from Patterson and an assist from Wilson. The fourth goal was a hustle play by Beane who charged the goalie who cleared it back into Beane’s head, for an interesting header or face ball. The fifth and final goal came from another assist by Wilson to Manning for another header.

The Mustangs brought home the Boots and Butts trophy as the champions of the tournament. The defense, Cooper, Hansman, Kramer, Moore and Bechridge had a very good tournament allowing just 1 goal in 3 games. The entire team played very well, Cooper, Hansman, Kidney, Kramer and Uebel were named all tournament team.

Boone Game

Way to go Varsity, our first shut out—Mustangs 3 Rebels 0

Mustangs started with a perfect corner by Avils to Uebel for a header to score-Goal One!

Our midfield distributed the ball very well throughout the game; the Rebels large field suited the Mustangs perfectly.

We lost Neltner in the first half due to a collision with Boone’s goalie and Uebel.  It was good to see the underclassmen step it up during times of injury and rest.

We wore the Rebels down the second half just like that of the Colonels. We capitalized on a poor pass back to the Rebel Goalie who consequently made a poor throw that was intercepted by Kidney. Kidneys quickly dribbled pass the defenders and with a nice move outsmarted the goalie-Goal Two!

The third and final goal was another header by Uebel. The sequence was quick and blurry; the assist was by Kidney with some help from the Rebel goalie. (Maybe Mr. Bartlett can help us out with his play by play on video?)

Congratulations to the defense who kept the Rebels to six shots, ZERO goals! The Mustangs clearly controlled the game with eleven shots on goal. It was good clean game with few fouls, no cards and good sportsmanship by both teams.

 See you’ll in Hopkinsville!

Dixie Game

First let me apologize for the Varsity report, I could never fill the shoes of Mr. Tavel, nor will I pretend too! Initially I thought the Colonels were going to give us a game then slowly we wore them down. Schmidt, started us off with our first varsity goal of the season with an assist by Lloyd. The Second goal started in the midfield by Wilson then outside to Aviles and a pretty cross to Kidney. Aviles also delivered a corner for a goal (not clear if we had some Dixie help). We capitalized on another corner from Kidney to Neltner. Our fifth and final goal was put in the back of the net by Schmitt for his second goal of the game. Uebel’s reputation had him covered tight which allowed the diverse goals of the game, five goals four different players.

Our defense cannot go without mention, Moore marked Dixie’s leading scorer from last season like a pro. Cooper, Beckridge, Hansman and Kramer also played a significant role that helped our offense capitalize!

Great job boys!
