Joseph Pilates developed his exercise system in Germany in the early 1900s.  As a child he was plagued with asthma, rheumatic fever and rickets.  With his determination to strengthen his frail and sickly body, he created his method, which he called, ‘The Art of Contrology’, or muscle control.  Joseph set up his first official Pilates Studio in NYC after immigrating to the US in 1926.  It was not until the 1980s when Hollywood discovered Pilates.  Today it is one of the fastest growing exercise methods with 5 million Americans practicing – and the numbers continue to grow.
