How Do You Train Them?
Obedience training is most important with this breed of dogs. As stated on the previous page, Bull Terriers are quite strong willed and very fun loving. This makes them more than a
handful for a person who is not a good disciplinarian and dedicated to seeing that they are
properly trained and socialized. Again, it is necessary to invest in a choke chain collar since a rolled collar does not give you any control over the dog. The dog can easily pull
out of a rolled collar. IMPORTANT NOTE: Never leave a choke collar on a dog when you are not present. After studying several different styles of obedience and attending many
seminars on the subject, I found none more effective than the Volhard's "Motivational Method"
. Jack and Wendy Volhard are award-winning authors who are internationally recognized as
"trainers of trainers". They
have developed the "Motivational Method" as an approach to training for those who like their dogs. This Method relies on positive reinforcement to
make training fun for you and your dog. It uses the dog's instinctive drives, Pack, Prey and Defense to aid in training.
I attended their Training Camp in both 1995 and 1996 and would strongly recommend camp to anyone who is
committed to their dog. The Volhards also offer a series of highly recommended books and videos for sale at their website at www.volhard.com.
In addition, Wendy Volhard offers a five-day Healthy Dog Seminar and a
companion book entitled Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog which I would also recommend. Extensive information can be found in the book about nutrition and dog food
supplementation which every owner should be aware of. |
