Legislative Action
Take a few minutes to write to your representative, asking him/her to co-sponsor HR 1258, legislation that would close SOA/WHISC. If you live in Congressman Steve Chabot's district, please be aware that he has voted twice to close the SOA. Co-sponsoring the legislation would be a great next step! All you have to do to send a letter is enter your zip code in the "Write to Congress" box at the top of this page and hit enter. A sample letter called "Close the SOA-Co-Sponsor HR1258" is currently the line at the bottom. Click on the letter to personalize it and send it to your Member of Congress. If you are a friend of Mike O'Grady's, consider mentioning that in the first paragraph with the reasons for writing. Also, feel free to copy language from his affinity group's statement to add to the letter. It won't take long, but will go a long way toward making this a priority for your Representative. Right now there are 103 co-sponors for the bill. The SOAW estimates it will take 150 for the bill to pass.
Stephanie Beck Borden, a friend of Mike O'Grady's who formerly worked with Network, the Catholic Social Justice Lobby, reports that a meeting has been arranged in Cincinnati with Congressman Chabot on Friday, February 6, at 1:15 PM. The sense is that it would be good to have a large group of people show up at his office, but have a special delegation of a small group of people go into the office for the meeting.
