Clymer-DeBellis Javascript Benchmark
Back in the days of the Apple II+, the Commodore 64 and the Atari
800, we would scientifically test computer speed by entering an
empty FOR-NEXT loop in BASIC. As I recall, 10,000 iterations would
take about 10 seconds. Or maybe it was 1000 iterations.
Anyway, today's commonly-available interpreted language is JavaScript.
On my creaky, old Macintosh Performa I can whip through 100,000
iterations of an empty FOR loop in about a second. This just seems
to show the truth of Manfred Low's postulate: "Computers seem
to be getting faster, but let's go out and get a Data General
with punched paper tape input."
