INSECTS
AND OTHER TERRESTRIAL ARTHROPODS
Insects are the most successful animals on the planet. Some are beautiful, some are ugly, some are helpful, and others cause extreme harm to the humans on our planet. In all cases, the more that you learn about insects, the more fascinating they become.
I am an entomologist (a person who studies insects). In particular, I am a Dipterist (a person who studies flies!). My specialty is in the classification, evolution, mating behavior and ecology of the Sarcophagidae, or flesh flies. My name is Dr. Greg Dahlem and you can find out a little more about me if you visit my page.
Making up a web page is a lot of work, and I don't want to spend my time repeating what is already available. There are a wide variety of excellent web sites dedicated to entomology, and I have included a short list of excellent sites that should serve as starting points to anyone who is interested in finding out more about the wonderful world of insects. Visit these sites to find beautiful pictures of butterflies, dragonflies, etc. or to find all kinds of information, from general to highly technical, about different groups of insects. Consider this as the starting point of a "web adventure" if you are just starting out on an entomological investigation!
Some major electronic resources to use to find out more
about the study of insects:
WWW Entomology Resources (Michigan State University)
Iowa State Entomology Index of Internet Resources
Electronic Resources on Lepidoptera
Gordons Entomological Home Page
The World-Wide Web Virtual Library: Entomology (Biosciences)
If you are interested in arthropod groups other than insects,
you might find my page on the Arthropoda useful. I have made up a list
of the major taxa (classification groups) of the arthropods which
includes links to representative photos and pictures of the groups and
links to sites which offer more information on the groups. These animals
are among the most bizzare looking creatures that walk the planet. I think
that you will find this page very interesting!
As I mentioned earlier, my specialty is the study of the Sarcophagidae, or flesh flies. One of my main goals in preparing this web site is to share useful information on this family of flies to other scientists around the world. The information on my pages on the Sarcophagidae can be quite technical, but you are welcome to visit these pages and, perhaps, you will see why I think these flies are fascinating enough to devote my life's work to!
