There is a story that was told us that Jane McClurkin Weir carried a message hidden in her hair during the Revolutionary War, riding a horse bareback, and followed a blazed trail through the woods. Incidently, traditions has it Jane McClurkin Weir was heroine in the War of Revolution. As the story goes, she carried a secret message in the long plats of her hair from Colonel Davis in Mecklenburg District to General Sumter's camp east of Catawba River. In doing this, she rode horseback through a wilderness infested with British soldiers and American Tories. (From McClurkin Record) Notes for DAVID WEIR: He came from Ireland on the ship "Don Luce" in 1772. James McClurkin and his children came over on the same ship. One of his children was Jane McClurki, whio later became David's wife.
