After an illness of less than two weeks, Dr. N. S. Matthews, the dean of the medical profession in Williamstown, died at his home on North Main street Tuesday evening about 7 o'clock. His death was due to heart trouble with which he had been a sufferer for a great many years. Among the residents of Williamstown none had a more extended acquaintance nor were more favorably known than Dr. Matthews. He located in Williamstown 33 years ago and began the practice of his profession and has been an active practioner here ever since. He built up an extensive practice and accumulated a considerable estate. Sketch of His Life. Dr. N. S. Matthews was the eldest son of Thomas Morris Matthews and Ann M. Matthews, both of Virginian descent. He was born August 25, 1851, at Crittenden, Grant county, Ky. His family later moved to Verona. At the age of 19 he married Miss Mariah Turner, a resident Of' this county. Three children were born to this union: Clara, Edna and Barry.. The eldest daughter is the wife of .J. Frank Hutcheson, a prominent journalist of Covington. The son, Harry, resides at Marion, Ala., and the youngest daughter' is unmarried and kept house for her father. Dr. Matthews entered the Medical College of Ohio as a student in 1875, and after attending the lectures for two years located near Lawrenceburg, Ind., where for three years he practiced medicine, then returned to Covington, where he took another course of lectures, graduating from the Medical College of Ohio in 1880. In May of. that year his first wife died, and he came to Williamstown the same year and formed a partnership with W. C. Johnson, at that time one of the leading physicians of this place. His partnership with Dr. Johnson lasted for three years, when Dr. Johnson moved to Downingsville. The doctor was married later in life to Miss Belle C. Innis, of Columbus, O., a daughter of one of the most prominent men in that city. One child, Raymond, was born to this union. He is a teacher in an agricultural, college at DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and is at the present time in a hospital suffering from an attack of diptheria, and was unable to come home, to attend the obsequies. His second wife died a number of years ago, since which time he has lived in his beautiful home on North Main street with his daughter, Miss Edna, looking after his household comforts. He had been a working member in the Williamstown Baptist church for many years and was considered one of the pillars of the church. Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the interment was in the Williamstown cemetery
