----------Added by Dave Sanders 2/12/2000-------------
From the book "Kentucky Post Offices":
When storekeeper Hayse Stocker petitioned for a post office a mile east of Silver Creek and south of the Kentucky River, postal authorities rejected his family name. They accepted instead that of a relative, one (or both?) of two known Delpha Stockers--Mrs. Sidney (nee Brumfield) Stocker or her six year old granddaughter. The Delpha post office opened on July 18, 1900. In June 1902 its second (and last) postmaster, William Thomas Sanders moved the office 1 1/2 miles north to the banks of the river, probably at or near the mouth of Stony Fork, fourteen miles wnw of Richmond. In Aug. 1910 it closed.Stocker was more successful in May 1909 when his given name was accepted for another post office, Haysburg, two miles south of Delpha, which by then had moved to the river. Through June 1912 Haysburg served a community that is still known as Woodland Heights.

John M. Sanders, married (1) Jessamine County, Kentucky, 24 December 1903 to Martha E. Gullett, (2) Jessamine County, Kentucky, 6 April 1965 to Beatrice Gayheart Locker.
Jessamine (KY) Journal obit index:
Sanders, John Medford July 9, 1970
[researcher's notes:]
Working on John Medford's (son of James Weston) wife's Gulletts now. That one is not so straight forward. These Gulletts also intermingled with a couple of other of our Sanders'. These folks are a mess - thank goodness there are not many of them. Only a couple of bros came to Jessamine and they settled very close to our David C. Sanders. They came from Owsley where in 1880 one of them lived next door to Ibby Maupin's parents -- and these two bros are the only Gulletts in Owsley at the time. So in spite of their tendency to change their names, they have to be our Gulletts. One of the brothers is John, the other Henry C. who became "Dude" in Jessamine. John looks like father of Martha E. (wife of John Medford Sanders). Here's a note I found in somebody's tree on him - aka "Foolaround": "Notorious for fooling around. Had escapade w/neighbor's Wife. Neigbor chopped off her head. Her ghost is still said to haunt the property (supposedly caused the death of Dora's husband & son)." Might be why he moved to Jessamine and changed his name to "Gully" for 1900 census

SAND KY29-Newspaper, Minnie Alice Sanders Wade, 91st. birthday.
From Mary Wade Clark, Minnie's daughter:
"Momma married Riley Wade first, but he died of pneumonia 2 weeks after they were married. Momma wanted to move back home, but Grandpa Peter wouldn't let her unless she paid rent, even after she had practically raised her younger brothers & sisters. She then married Bob Wade, Riley's brother. He was a very mean man & would never allow Minnie to see her relatives after they got married. He was always gone, walking all over the place. He died when he got run over by a truck walking on route 27."from Lucille Jackson Chaney, Minnie's grand-niece:
Minnie Alice Sanders was married to my grandfather's uncle. My grandfather was Henry Wade. His oldest daughter, Lillian Wade Jackson was my mother. Mary Wade Clark, cousin twice removed told me her grandfather Peter Fluallen Sanders was black dutch. Said she had no idea what that means. Look it up; same as Melungeon. A mixed race almost ethic cleansed. May be from the Levant. I have several books on it. Aunt Minnie was almost like a grandmother to us. Loved to visit her place on Sugar Creek. Are you the one who told of passport written in German and French of the Sanders who left port in France? I tried to find it again without success .I love history, especially the part that has to do with ancestors.

SANDERS SR ALPHA M 064 SCOTT SCOTT 02-28-1949 013 06156 1949----------------- notes from Dave Sanders ----------------
On Feb 26, 2000, 2 weeks before Grace White's 99th birthday, Bob Brumfield and I went to see her. I asked her about my grandfather, Alpha Mennon, Sr. (her brother). She said that Alph was an honest man. He was fair and honest in his dealings. She said people used to have a saying when talking about someone's character - - "He's as honest as Alph Sanders".
Grace also said "Alph never was one to be shy about moving. But he always checked with his boys to make sure it was someplace they wanted to go".
His travels in KY (as near as I can tell):
- Born in Madison Co.
- Moved with his parents to Logana, Jessamine Co.
- Somewhere along the line, Grace said he lived in Bourbon Co. and Mortonsville (Woodford Co.).
- In the 1925 Lexington City Directory (Fayette Co.) he is listed as a grocer with a store at 349 Clifton Ave. Clifton has now been cleared of all buildings and is a wide pedestrian boulevard leading up to and around the William T. Young Library on the University of Kentucky campus.
- The 1925 and 1927 Lexington City Directory list the residence of Alpha and Jennie Sanders as 312 Rose Lane. This address would have been about 3 blocks from the grocery store. It is now a parking lot between the Sturgill Research Center and the Catholic Newman Center Holy Spirit Parish on the University of Kentucky campus.
- In the 30's, Alph & Jennie lived on a farm on Steel Pike, near Clifton (Woodford Co.). This is where he lived when Jennie died and he married Sarah.
- Around 1946, he and Sarah moved to Muddyford Pike in Oxford (Scott Co.). He also owned a farm of about 40 acres on Rt 62, near Oxford.Alf met both his wives at the home place of Sarah Jane Sanders (his 2nd wife) at the end of Taylor Ridge Rd.

33. Stony Fork Ferry (J-M) (RM 151.1)
The Stony Fork Ferry was located at the end of Taylor Ridge Road (Jessamine County) across from the mouth of Stony Fork (Madison County). The Jessamine County side was also the site of a general store operated by the Sanders family when the ferry was in operation. Part of Mr. Sanders business in the early 1900’s consisted of meeting tow boats on their way up and down the river and to supply them with needed food and supplies.
