MOTHER AND THREE CHILDREN DROWN
A heart-rending tragedy occurred in the Kentucky river, just below the mouth
of Silver Creek, between this and Jessamine counties on last Monday night.
Mr. John Sanders, his wife and three children, who reside in this county, had
been over in Jessamine county to visit the parents of Mr. Sanders. About 9
o'clock they left for home. Mr. Sanders carried a lantern. Upon reaching the
river he placed the lantern in the canoe in front of him, and started across.
One report says the lantern went out leaving such apparent darkness that Mr.
Sanders could not see where he was rowing, and another says that the lantern
so blinded him that he could not see. Be that as it may, the canoe ran into a
chute, which beads immediately below the crossing, and capsized. The mother
and three children were instantly drowned, but Mr. Sanders escaped. Mrs.
Sanders was a daughter of the late Mitchell Perkins of this county, and was
twenty-five or thirty years old. The oldest child was six or eight years old,
the youngest a baby of twelve months, and the other one was between those ages.
The crossing where this fearful accident occurred, has for many years been
used by a neighboring church on occasions of baptisms. A large crowd of men,
women and children assembled there on Tuesday, but not one of the bodies
could be found.
LATER - The bodies have all been found. The children were all close together
and not far from the mother. It is now learned that the canoe did not get into
the chute, but struck a pile of drift, and Sanders thinking it the shore,
stepped out upon it. It sank with him, and in some way the canoe turned over
with the results already stated."

[notes: When his sister told the story, she said John was drunk. He remained at his home in Madison county for a while, but the daily reminders of his family were too much for him. He packed his belongings and left, never to be seen again. Most believe he moved to Missouri.]

----------------- notes from Dave Sanders ----------------
On Feb 26, 2000, 2 weeks before Grace White's 99th birthday, Bob Brumfield and I went to see her. I asked her about my grandfather, Alpha Mennon, Sr. (her brother).

She said that Alph was an honest man. He was fair and honest in his dealings. She said people used to have a saying when talking about someone's character - - "He's as honest as Alph Sanders".

Grace also said "Alph never was one to be shy about moving. But he always checked with his boys to make sure it was someplace they wanted to go".
His travels in KY (as near as I can tell):
- Born in Madison Co.
- Moved with his parents to Logana, Jessamine Co.
- Somewhere along the line, Grace said he lived in Bourbon Co. and Mortonsville (Woodford Co.).
- In the 1925 Lexington City Directory (Fayette Co.) he is listed as a grocer with a store at 349 Clifton Ave. Clifton has now been cleared of all buildings and is a wide pedestrian boulevard leading up to and around the William T. Young Library on the University of Kentucky campus.
- The 1925 and 1927 Lexington City Directory list the residence of Alpha and Jennie Sanders as 312 Rose Lane. This address would have been about 3 blocks from the grocery store. It is now a parking lot between the Sturgill Research Center and the Catholic Newman Center Holy Spirit Parish on the University of Kentucky campus.
- In the 30's, Alph & Jennie lived on a farm on Steel Pike, near Clifton (Woodford Co.). This is where he lived when Jennie died and he married Sarah.
- Around 1946, he and Sarah moved to Muddyford Pike in Oxford (Scott Co.). He also owned a farm of about 40 acres on Rt 62, near Oxford.

Alf met both his wives at the home place of Sarah Jane Sanders (his 2nd wife) at the end of Taylor Ridge Rd.

Lemuel Teater

Posted by Ann Teater Collier on Thu, 31 May 2001
Surname: Teater, Saunders
Luella Saunders married Lemuel Teater somewhere in the area of Crab Orchard, Ky. circa 1900.+ Their first child, My father named William Lloyd Teater, was born 01/18/1905, grew up to be one of the more famous professional Saddlebred horse trainers in the 20th century. Despite this FACT, I have been unable to find any history that the family ever existed. Earl, their 2nd son also became a winning trainer working for Frances Dodge Van Lennep of Castleton Farm outside Lexington. His biggest winner was the famed 5 gaited horse Wing Commander. Please contact me if you have any information of this family before my birth in 1932. I would be MOST grateful!.Ann
