I would think that, more than most things, one's interests define what a person is all about. Listed here are things that are important to me; things that I like to think about, be a part of or envision in a better world. I haven't placed them on this page in any order of importance so as to leave myself some degree of privacy. Hell - these web pages are certainly an incredible invasion of our privacy - aren't they? I wonder why I am compelled to create one. I guess because I hope that like minded people will take the time to read it and maybe contact me about it. So - you folks that aren't like minded - ..... - Well, you can't control people either so I just hope you aren't offended by what I offer for your speculation. And you folks that are like minded, send me an email, sign my guest book or send your thoughts my way.
Here are places where I go again and again. I like to see what's changing at these sites. I like the people or the ideas expressed on these pages. I like to share these people or thoughts with you.

Dance has got to be one of the most satisfying recreations in my life.
I took up folk dancing in college and continued with some form of dancing ever since. I
have found East Coast Swing to be the most fun. I like high energy, close contact and just
losing my mind in the flow of the music. Dance reaches a pinnacle when you merge with the
music. Sufis or drumming circles or big band or rock and roll. It doesn't matter where the
rhythm comes from, it can take you to a different place. This is a page I am developing for the Cincinnati Swing Dance Society, where I am currently active. The other is a site of other Cincinnati Swing activities around town. |
| Earlham College I am here |
Here is Earlham College and sites from there or people who were there. Earlham is the college I spent 7 years of my life at. Having spent so much time there, I can unequivocally recommend it to anyone who is looking for a serious, compassionate, ethical college. It is a different kind of college. The values there are about community and learning. The professors care about the students and if they don't, they're not welcome or allowed to stay. You won't find a professor who places research before a student. If you do find research, it's there first for the student and second for the professor and the college. The students care about each other and most everyone thinks an education is an important reason for being there. You won't find fraternities and sororities and lots of people into themselves and heavy into parties, drugs or alcohol. You won't find a group who hides from these things either. Students are involved and active and care about the future and each other. Don't gt me wrong though - it's not a moral majority kind of place either. You'll find a tolerant and progressive kind of religious influence there that fights for the rights of the oppressed. You're as likely to find a gay support group as a photography club and when the government banned scholarships for draft resistors, Earlham said it would personally match any scholarship to any draft resistor that was being denied by the government. Last but not least, you'll get an outstanding education. Earlham come in tops, even with the ivy league colleges. Don't go if you're not the type of person who'll work hard because everyone works hard. Students and professors take education seriously. I never worked so hard in my life. I knew HS valedictorians who were crushed their first year there because they never imagined that every student there was going to be as serious as they were. Learning is a spirit that often gets crushed and Earlham tries to revive it in many new and creative ways. Students respond and intellectualism prevails. |

Stevie is my favorite artist. Her music spoke to me during a very difficult part of my life. I feel very deeply the melancholy and sensuality and energy that she sings. Her music moves me in a way different from the music I love for dancing. I like her pagan influence and her soft satin and lace look. I like her strength and her determination to be the person she wants to be. |

Pages that recognize the worlds that extend beyond everyday middle-class, Euro-American experience; pages that challenge the reader to become involved or sometimes simply more aware or knowledgeable about the community at large. Pages that encourage us to be better citizens of the world. Most of all, I mean pages that make me feel as though I am a better person for simply knowing about that Web site." |

The earth is in the early stages of an ecological and spiritual crisis. I don't know how it's all going to settle out but I know that each of us needs to do our little bit. I've found that I need to move slowly but to keep on moving I need to remain educated and involved.

I've grown up Quaker (aka. Society of Friends) and my identity and life revolve around Quakerism. I am webmaster for the Community Friends Monthly Meeting below and find much of my spare time is Friendly time. I have found that there are many aspects of spirituality that still make very little sense to me. Fortunately, Quakerism is an extremely open and liberal religion and I can search many paths including paganism and non-theistic alternatives without leaving the support structure of the Quaker church. I have found many places in all these theologies that are important to me and they are all a part of my whole life.

A lot of time and thought has brought me to wondering about the way we interact in the most intimate ways. I have always thought that there was something strange about the way most relationships are kept functioning even though they are completely dysfunctional. I was amazed that I did the same. As a biologist, warning bells were ringing. As a person I found myself unhappy and wondering why. Polyamory is a new idea whose place is yet to come and, I believe, one which once was during our early evolution. I have been exploring the concept since the late 80's. As I begin to discuss and explore this idea with friends, I find many see it as threatening while others see it as desirable but impossible. Some have found ways to maintain this lifestyle. It's certainly not an easy path for those who've chosen it, living in a society that condemns what makes you happy.

I have found some folks on the web who have been open and thoughtful in their discussion of polyamory. Some others that have found this lifestyle works for them and they are normal, exciting and/or interesting. I have posted them here so I can remember to visit their sites and keep up with them.

Nudism is another societal phobia that makes no sense to me. I call myself naturist because I am not a nudist. I do not find myself craving groups or contact. I just enjoy the touch of the sky. It is, as the wiccan say, a reflection of our freedom and intimate relationship to nature.

I try not to separate politics from day to day life. Politics is just our relationship to the larger society and whether we choose to do a little or a lot we are making our statement. Quakers are a group of people who have made activism a part of their legacy and I have grown up with people who powerfully and slowly resist the dominant paradigms of power. Phrases such as "Speak Truth to Power" have reverberated through my being for my entire life.
Understanding and inventing have always been what I liked best. I like finding new ways of looking at things and better ways of understanding the complex. If it means anything to you, I am a type 5, or observer in the enneagram below. Take the test, it is very eye opening, if nothing else.
