The Dog Page

My dad came to visit a couple of weekends ago, and like men, we spent the entire weekend in two places: the garage, and Home Depot. The garage to build a small bookshelf, and Home Depot to buy things that would cover up the mistakes we made making it. :-) In any event, here is the result of our efforts, and below are a few of the tools I've managed to pick up along the way. I just got the go-ahead to get a compound mitre saw to allow me to make some picture frames for Mary, as well as to do the bookshelf in the basement.

These two shots were taken before I was finished staining the bookshelf. This is only with the Cherry stain on it. I ended up going with the Red Oak stain - it was darker, and more closely matched the cherry furniture in the computer room.
Here's the finished product. Doesn't look too bad, considering it's the first time the old man and I had done anything like it. We somehow managed to meet Mary Ann's specs - had to match the wood color of the cherry stuff that was already in the computer room, had to fit below the window, and had to fit between the desk and the file cabinet. Check, check and check. Plus, the whole thing was a proof of concept to see if I'll be allowed to build the bookshelf in the basement. I was mostly fired up because I was able to use all of my power tools. (see below)

Here's the Freud biscuit joiner. I don't know how it works - but it sure sounds impressive, doesn't it? "That guy has a BISCUIT JOINER!" Now to join some biscuits . . .

Yes dear, I NEED a router.
Here's my Porter-Cable router. That baby gets up to 28,000 RPMs. You can almost feel the power coming out of the page, can't you?

I've already used it, and I still have all 10 fingers.
Finally, here's the circular saw. Used this to build the workbench and pegboard. Mine has a soft-sided carrying case, however.

The Ryobi 10" Mitre saw. The only way to cut 45º angles.
Just got this baby. Already used it to cut legs for sawhorses. Mary wants me to make some picture frames for the dining room, and this is the necessary tool to do it.

Wolfcraft Router Table
I had been thinking about building a router table, but finally decided that I'd just buy one. This is the small one, the 470. The nice feature is that you can hook your Shop-Vac up to the back of it - and collect your sawdust as you make it. They both run off of the same outlet, so the Shop-Vac only runs when the router is running. Managed to get a new router bit out of that as well . . .more pix on those to come. I finally have all the necessary pieces to build those picture frames . . . now if Mary would just let me stand up and do it. (The back makes standing for any lenth of time, um . . .unpleasant to say the least.)
