Our Hawaiian Islands Vacation
The first island that we visited was Maui. There are many interesting things to do and see on Maui, ranging from visiting a vineyard, to snorkeling at Molokini, to bicycling down a 10,000 foot volcanic mountain, to hiking in a tropical jungle. Because of the quantity and diversity of activities, and also because Maui is the second most popular island, we choose this as our first stop. We planned activities that afforded limited sun exposure on alternate days in order to get ourselves acclimated to the UV rays. Below is a picture of one of the many sights that you will see on the road to Hana - a beautiful scenic ALL DAY drive.
After the activity filled stay on Maui, we headed to Kauai, which is a more scenic, restful island. Many young couples choose this island for honeymoons, for it's quiet, peaceful, beautiful atmosphere. The Fern Grotto, while a bit hokey, is a fun trip. Waimea Canyon is known as the "Grand Canyon of Hawaii". The white sand beaches are beautiful, and plentiful. Natural wonders abound including Spouting Horn which is pictured below.
The next stop was the Big Island of Hawaii. This island, the largest of the chain, was also our favorite island. The weather was always comfortable, as illustrated below.
It is much less populated than Maui, or Oahu, and has a very different "feel". There are wonderful snorkeling sites, as well as amonument to Captain Cook who met his demise on this island. Of course, world famous Kona Coffee is not to be missed. Take home a few pounds of Coconut Creme, or for you purists, Kona Peaberry is one of four super premium coffees in the world. This island is still growing due to Kilauea which is still active. In the 1980s, Chain of Craters Road fell to the wrath of Madam Pele. The lava literally cut the road in two, and today it is no longer possible to complete the loop on this road.
