The purpose of this page is to help guide you through the
steps necessary to unzip a file using the PKZIP program. These are DOS instructions,
and should work on all computers. Many folks use "shell" programs such
as WINZIP, and they are happy with them. These instructions, should work on all
IBM compatible computers, regardless of the operating system you use. The first
thing that you'll need is the ZIP program itself. The latest version of the program
is Version 2.04g and the name of the file is PKZ204G.EXE. If you don't have it,
you'll need to download the program. It is available many places including HERE.~~Now
that you have the program, you'll need to
a) Boot to DOS
b) Drop to DOS (simply find the icon that says MS DOS Prompt) or
c) Restart computer in DOS Mode.
Use the method that you feel most comfortable with. PKZ204G.EXE is a self extracting
file. When you run the file, it will explode into various files. Let's assume that
you've downloaded the file, and that you don't know where it is. The first thing
we want to do is find the file. Let'sChange Directory
to the root directory by typing:
CD\
Now to find the file let's do a DIRectory listing, looking for our file, including all Subdirectories.
Type:
DIR PKZ204G.EXE /S
Note that there are spaces between DIR and PKZ and between the EXE and the /S. In
any of these instructions if you get a message such as:
Bad Command or File Name or
....is not an operable program or batch file
then you need to watch the spaces more closely. Now that we know where our file
is, we need a place to put it. Let's Make a Directory by typing:
MD\ZIP
When we did our DIR listing we got a result something like:
The~`volume`~label`~in~`drive~`C`~is~`C_DRIVE`~..
The`~Volume~`Serial~`Number`~is~`216D:17CA.
Directory`~of~`C:\INTERNET\FTP\DLOADS
PKZ204G``EXE````202574```4-06-93```2:04a
````````1 file(s)````````202574`bytes`used
Total files listed:
````````1 file(s)````````202574 bytes used
````````````````1223655424 bytes free
This tells us that the file is located in the directory named \Internet\ftp\dloads
which is located on our C drive. Your directory name will be different. Copy the
file to our new ZIP directory by typing:
COPY \INTERNET\FTP\DLOADS\PKZ204G.EXE \ZIP
Remember to substitute your own directory name in the place of \INTERNET...etc
We now want to Change Directories to our ZIP directory. To do this type:
CD\ZIP
We are now ready to explode our file into it's various components. For instructions
on this, click on Page 2.
