FLICK, Dawn (see the article below) Death Row
sentence not enough for mom
By Kimball Perry, Post staff reporter
Linda Flick unleashed 11 months of pain and rage on the
man sentenced today to Death Row for murdering her daughter. She blames
him as well for her husband's suicide the day after their daughter's death.
''You coward. Why didn't you kill yourself? You are the lowest form of
life. You are a murderer, a rapist and a controlling piece of garbage,''
Ms. Flick told Patrick Leonard today.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Mark Schweikert
followed a jury's recommendation and sentenced Leonard, 31, to death.
Leonard was convicted in May of the aggravated murder of Dawn Flick as
well as attempted rape, kidnapping and two counts of felonious assault
for shooting at the two men who tried to rescue Miss Flick. He executed
the 23-year-old woman by shooting her in the head three times July 29,
ending her vain attempt to assert her independence from the man she dated
for nine years, then stood by even after he fathered two children
with another woman. The next day her distraught father, Les Flick,
owner of the popular Home Like Inn restaurant in New Baltimore killed himself.
''You not only took my Dawn's life (but) you should also be accused of
murdering my husband. ... Your actions killed him,'' Linda Flick said in
an angry but wavering voice. ''Les and I always regretted letting
Dawn spend time with you. We despised you, you coward, leading your double
lives.'' As she spoke, members of Leonard's family wept. ''She
never loved you,'' the mother continued. ''She pitied you. She was even
dating other people. She could have done so much better. You wouldn't let
her.'' Leonard sat stone-faced, moving only to examine the fingernails
on his right hand, as she spoke. ''They could have just handed you over
to me. I would have sentenced you months ago,'' the mother added.
''I hate you, you coward, and I hope the prisoners give you an exceptionally
warm welcome. ''...You are going to burn in hell and my Dawn and
my Les are with our Lord.'' Leonard asked for the judge to spare
his life, hoping others in prison could learn from the mistakes he made.
''I can't change what happened,'' he said, adding that he hopes both his
family and the Flick family ''find some peace'' with the court case over.
Schweikert ordered Leonard to be executed Oct. 26 but the appeals process
standard in death penalty cases will delay that for years.
The last Ohio execution was June 14 when Jay D. Scott
became the first Ohio inmate to be executed against his will since 1963.
Ohio executed Wilford Berry, ''The Volunteer,'' in 1999 after Berry waived
his appeals and asked to be put to death. Schweikert also sentenced
Leonard to 40 years in prison for the other crimes. Publication date:

The Cincinnati Enquirer
CROSBY TOWNSHIP — The 22-year-old daughter of a well-known
restaurant owner was found shot to death here early Saturday morning.
Dawn R. Flick's former boyfriend, Patrick L. Leonard, was charged with
aggravated murder in her death. He also is charged with attempted murder
of Ryan Gries, who was wounded in the attack on Ms. Flick. Mr. Leonard,
30, allegedly shot both Ms. Flick, whose parents own Les Flick's Homelike
Inn, and Mr. Gries. The 3 a.m. shooting happened at Ms. Flick's home in
the 6900 block of River Road in Crosby Township. Mr. Leonard lives about
six houses down the street. According to a 911 tape at the Hamilton
County communications center, Ms. Flick called Mr. Gries, 25, and another
friend for help. The caller, who was not identified by police, said Mr.
Leonard had come to Ms. Flick's house and had struck her. The caller said
that when he arrived, Mr. Leonard shot through the front door with a .22-caliber
rifle. Mr. Gries, of Miamitown, was shot in the side. He was treated
and released from University Hospital on Saturday. Ms. Flick was found
in her home. Campbell County police said Mr. Leonard surrendered at the
Highland Heights station. He is being held in the Campbell County Detention
Center for a Monday morning arraignment.
Neighbors were dismayed. At Sam's Corners, a convenience store next to
Ms. Flick's house, Sam Duncan recalled that Ms. Flick had stopped in Friday
afternoon for milk. “They (Ms. Flick and Mr. Leonard) were both good
people,” he said. “This is one that's going to take some time to figure
out.”

Police say suspect confessed to killing --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Police say a New Baltimore man told police in July that
anger and exhaustion drove him to kill his former girlfriend, Dawn Flick,
a member of the family that owned Flick's Home Like Inn restaurant.
Patrick Leonard, 30, made the taped statement to police
hours after he was arrested on charges of fatally shooting Ms. Flick, 22.
The statement was discussed Monday during a pretrial hearing before Judge
Mark Schweikert in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court. Ms. Flick was found
dead at her New Baltimore home July 29. Her father, Les Flick, killed himself
the next day at Flick's Home Like Inn. If Mr. Leonard is convicted of aggravated
murder, he could face a death sentence.
FLICK, Les; Les and Dawn Flick, ran restaurant
(Published Aug 2, 2000 in Cinti. Enq.)
Funeral arrangements have been made for Dawn Flick and
her father, Les Flick. Ms. Flick, 22, of New Baltimore was shot in
her home Saturday. Her ex-boyfriend, Patrick L. Leonard, 30, was arrested
and charged with aggravated murder. Ms. Flick's father, Les Flick of New
Baltimore, shot himself to death Sunday after learning his daughter had
died, police said. He was 67. The two worked together at Mr. Flick's Home
Like Inn restaurant in New Baltimore. Mr. Flick was the owner, and Ms.
Flick was a manager. They leave their wife and mother, Linda Flick
of New Baltimore; and daughters (and sisters) Kelly Fenech of New Baltimore,
Leslie (Shell) Flick of Grants Pass, Ore., and Kimberley Avakian of Santa
Barbara, Calif. Visitation for both will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday
at St. Aloysius Church, 3350 Chapel Road, Shandon, Ohio. Mass will be at
11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Gravesite services will be at 12:30 p.m.
Thursday at the Miamitown Cemetery in Miamitown. Memorials for Les Flick
should be directed to the American Cancer Society and for Dawn Flick to
an art scholarship fund at William Harrison High School. The Charles C.
Young Funeral Home, Ross, is handling arrangements.
Tragic Deaths in New Baltimore (OH); Pat Leonard
Guilty of Aggravated Murder (Ft. Scott Camp Bugle)
Although I usually avoid controversial topics (e.g.,
Father Cooley) on the website, the scope of recent events merits coverage
because two great families associated with Fort Scott, the Flicks and the
Leonards, have been devastated by recent events. Although a complete understanding
of events is far from known, both of these families need our thoughts,
support, and prayers.
During the early morning of Saturday, July 29, 2000,
Dawn Flick, 23, of New Baltimore, was fatally shot three times in the head
in her Crosby Township home. She was the daughter of Les Flick, owner of
Les Flick's Homelike Inn, a New Baltimore institution and long-time Fort
Scott gathering place.
Pat Leonard, also of New Baltimore, was arrested and
charged with aggravated murder in the case. Leonard, 30 at the time of
Flick's death, was also accused of the attempted murder of Ryan Gries,
25, of Miamitown, a friend of Ms. Flick who reportedly responded to the
scene after receiving a phone call for assistance from her. Gries reportedly
received a gunshot wound at Flick's house in his back. Gries was treated
and released from University Hospital.
Leonard surrendered himself at the Highland Heights police
station in Campbell County, KY later that Saturday. According to various
accounts, Leonard and Ms. Flick had been romantically involved for several
years. In an audiotaped interview with Hamilton County sheriff's investigators
later that day, Leonard acknowledged that he shot Flick in her home. On
Sunday morning, July 30, 2000, Les Flick, 67, was found with a gunshot
wound to the head inside his New Baltimore restaurant. According to reports,
the wound was self-inflicted. He was rushed to University Hospital, where
he later died from the wounds. Les was reported to be very distraught in
the wake of his daughter's slaying. Les is survived by his wife, Linda,
and their daughters, Kelly Fenech, Leslie (Shell) Flick, and Kimberley
Avakian. Memorials for Les Flick should be directed to the American Cancer
Society and for Dawn Flick to an art scholarship fund at William Harrison
High School. On Monday, August 7, 2000, Leonard was indicted by a
Hamilton County (Ohio) grand jury on charges of aggravated murder, attempted
murder, rape, and kidnapping associated in the death of Dawn Flick.
On Thursday, May 24, 2001, Leonard was found guilty by a Hamilton County
jury of two counts of aggravated murder, kidnapping, felonious assault,
and attempted rape. One week later on Thursday, May 31, the same jury recommended
that Leonard be put to death for his crimes. On June 28, 2001, Judge
Mark Schweikert accepted the jury's recommendation, giving Leonard a death
sentence plus 40 years.
