Jolley, Barney E. Jr.: Although the 2004 boating season is young, it has already produced two fatalities, one of them in Lake Cumberland.    Barney E. Jolley Jr., 30, of Bronston, drowned on Sunday morning when the boat in which he was traveling struck debris in the water and sunk.   According to reports filed by the Wayne County Rescue Squad and the Ky. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Jolley had been fishing with three other people when the accident occurred between 3:30 and 4 a.m. in the Big Island area of the Beaver Creek arm of the lake, near Old Apple Orchard Landing.    "Their boat hit a submerged log and (it) knocked a hole in the hull of the boat," said state fish and wildlife Sgt. Tim Catron. "The boat quickly took on water in the stern. The weight of the water caused the bow to shoot  straight up in the air and threw the passengers out of the vessel."   Two passengers, identified only as males, were able to walk from the site in search of help. Wendy Brotherton, 33, of Somerset, remained on the shore near the scene of the accident. At 8:14 a.m., the rescue squad was notified of the accident. They found Brotherton and transported her to a waiting Wayne Co. ambulance crew, which took her to the Wayne Co. Hospital where she was treated for hypothermia and shock.    Jolley's body was found by the rescue squad at 11:46 a.m. in about 75 feet of water about 200 feet from the accident site.    The accident remains under investigation by the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources.   The first drowning of the boating season occurred last week in Owen County when William A. "Tony" Otter, 21, of New Liberty, drowned in Lower Thomas Lake after a canoe overturned, ejecting him.  Neither of the two drowning victims was wearing a life jacket.    Ten people died in boating accidents in Kentucky in 2003.  Somerset/Pulaski News  Published April 29, 2004

Jones, Gregg:  One man was stabbed and another has been charged with murder, after an argument that occurred at a residence on Highway 167. The body of 29-year-old Gregg Jones, of Monticello, was discovered face-down in Town Creek just after 1 a.m. Friday morning. Wayne County Deputy Coroner Forrest Hicks was called to the scene and he pronounced Jones dead at approximately 1:45 a.m. Rodney G. Burnett, 25, was arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff¹s Department at 1:37 a.m. He was charged with murder and lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center. According to the citation filed in the case, witnesses to the argument had apparently contacted the 911 dispatch center at about 1 a.m. to report the stabbing. Officers who arrived at the scene discovered a large amount of blood in the grass near the residence. Witness statements allege that Burnett dragged Jones over a hill and down to the creek. The citation indicates that blood was found along the trail. Burnett was taken into custody at the Wayne County Hospital, where hewas apparently being treated for lacerations to his left hand and forearm, according to the citation. An autopsy was scheduled for the victim, and no results have yet been made available. The Wayne County Sheriff¹s Department is heading up the investigation. They were assisted at the scene by the Monticello Police Department, Kentucky State Police and the Wayne County EMS. Burnett is being held without bond, and was scheduled to be arraigned in Wayne District Court on Tuesday, June 14. Jones is survived by his parents, Gary Jones and Reeda Davis, and two sons, Gregg Jones II and Brandon Jones, both of Monticello. Services were held Monday, June 13 at the Marvin S.
