MAXEDON, Penny; 'Hayride' fiddler met her husband
in music business: Penny Maxedon, 80, loved outdoors By Matt Leingang Enquirer
staff writer Monday, February 28, 2005
Penny Maxedon, a country singer and musician who
appeared regularly on "Midwestern Hayride," one of Cincinnati's first weekly
television series, died Friday. She was 80. Mrs. Maxedon played the bass
fiddle in a band called the Lucky Pennies, a group founded by her husband,
the late Dean Richard Maxedon, who hosted "Hayride" from 1956 to 1972.
Produced by WLWT, "Hayride" was a Saturday evening musical variety show
that occasionally got picked up by NBC and ABC as a summer replacement
series, giving primetime national exposure to local acts. Syndicated in
the late 1960s, the show also attracted big-name artists, including Tex
Ritter, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell and Willie Nelson.
Mrs. Maxedon and her husband, who died in 1997, were synonymous with the
show. "She was an entertainer from the time she was a little girl," said
her daughter, Brenda Hitch, 58, of Falmouth. "She was always performing
for family members or her church. She loved music. She loved to entertain."
Mrs. Maxedon was born on June 19, 1924, in Wabash, Ind. As a teenager there,
she sang in various musical groups and got noticed by local radio stations.
She met her future husband through the music business. Shortly after their
marriage in 1945, the couple made their radio debut in Cincinnati, appearing
on WLW's "Boone County Jamboree," which evolved into the "Hayride" television
show. They moved to a farm in Campbell County when Mr. Maxedon was hired
as host of "Hayride" in 1956. After they left the show, they settled on
a farm near Butler, Pendleton County, where they raised dairy cattle and
grew tobacco. "Mom and dad got tired of the show business 'rat race,' "
Hitch said. In addition to TV, the Maxedons toured the Midwest, performing
at state and county fairs. Farming life suited them just fine. In particular,
Mrs. Maxedon was fond of her dogs and horses. "Mom loved the outdoors,"
Hitch said. "She was a very independent woman, too. Last summer, she mowed
her own grass. She wouldn't let her kids help at all." In addition to Hitch,
Mrs. Maxedon is survived by her sons, Dean "Rich" Jr. of Butler, Ben of
Zebulon, Ga., and John F. Maxedon of Butler; daughters, Tresa Cummins of
Falmouth, and Marla Purcell of Falmouth; brother, Daniel Shockey of Beaver
Dam, Va.; sister, Donna Fisher of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 23 grandchildren;
27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A service will
be held today at 2 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Home, 407 Shelby St., in Falmouth.

McKEE, Mary; passed at age 71. Services held at
Donald & Stewart Funeral Home, 3939 Reading Rd. at Paddock, Thursday
6 P.M..
McKEE , Mary Elizabeth (Villa Hills, Ky) loved
being around kids. So much so, that after raising her own six, she bought
a skating rink and spent her evenings watching over - and disciplining
- more kids. Ms. McKee owned and operated Skateland Paradise in Dayton,
Ky., for about 25 years. "Mom just loved going over there to see the kids,"
said her son, Paul McKee of Bellevue. "After raising six kids, you'd think
she'd want to get away from kids. We were pretty much grown. But she enjoyed
it. "The kids loved my mom. She was very caring and very loving. She cared
about each kid. She also provided discipline to the kids. If they were
bad, they got kicked out for a least a week, sometimes for the season.
She was very strong-willed and the kids really respected her. She wouldn't
waver." The rink was sold five years ago and turned into a launderette.
Ms. McKee died Thursday afternoon of cardiac arrest at St. Elizabeth Hospital
South in Edgewood. The Villa Hills resident was 80. She was born in Mount
Orab and grew up there. Before acquiring the skating rink, she was a stay-at-home
mom. "She was a very loving and caring mother," her son said. "She was
the kind of mother and grandmother that you would love to have." Ms. McKee
enjoyed stamp collecting and traveling. She was a member of the Red Hat
Society and was a Kentucky Colonel and grand matron of Eastern Star. An
infant son, Clarence McKee Jr., died in 1955. In addition to Paul, survivors
include: another son, Tom McKee of Fort Mitchell; four daughters, Beverly
