The Ho-Ho deal was never inked,
just a secret handshake, so
"Goin' Down In Flames" and The fantastic live album "I, HopHead"
are now hopelessly mired in legal wranglings.

BRAND NEW CITYBEAT REVIEW
for "I, HopHead" the live CD on Ho-Ho Records!
thanks to Mike Breen

· It's damn near impossible to pin-point exactly what
"sound" eccentric local quartet The Hopheads were going
for with their 2001 release I, Hophead. But it sure is fun to
try. The live album has a raw quality which actually befits
the band's renegade roots sound nicely. I, Hophead shows
the band striving to thoroughly mix up the slightly more
straightforward Rockabilly vibe they created with their
strong debut album, Grown Men Singing Songs. There's 21
cuts on I, split between unique originals and unusual cover
takes on songs by Velvet Underground (White Light, White
Heat"), Bob Dylan ("She Belongs To Me") and The Hombres
("Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)"), among others. The one
constant in the band's approach is the twisted danceability
of the cuts, be it a 'verb-ed out Surf instrumental or a
Rockabilly deconstruction. Not sure if it's ever happened,
but a gig teaming The Hopheads with like-minded local
heroes, The Wolverton Brothers, would be a lysergic,
devious live show to remember.

What? Yes, it's true....

The HopHeads are on a bender right now.
In a few weeks there will be new gigs, new songs, and the same old vices.

Aside from all that it's been just the usual yelling and drinking and
self-doubt, recriminations and loathing, punctuated by brilliant gigging.

The HopHeads are an uncommon and hard to pigeonhole combo, but it's safe to say they are not New-Age.
Their cerebral originals just destroy their wonderful covers, and from certain fractured perspectives they seem
to resemble a good old rockin' dance band, but look again and it's like nothing you've ever seen or heard before....
Straddling MiddleNew Town, Ohio, The HopHeads smear  the classic and the obscure to create an explosive argument.....

Formed in the early 80's, then quickly put on hiatus for over a decade,
while the members battled various addictions and served prison sentences,
the exact details of which remain obscured by too much, too soon.
While incarcerated they perfected their intellectually advanced and
drug-fueled strong repertoire. They now stand poised for the fame
that should've been in the bag but continues to elude them.
