To all SS-20 fans – I am writing to make sure you know about a Jockey
Club reunion of sorts. The Cincinnati publishing concern Aurore Press is
presenting a
collection of stories, art, photos called “Stories for Shorty” To commemorate
the publication a concert is being presented at the historic Southgate
house in Newport. The Thangs, The Libertines, SS-20, BPA, and The Reduced
are all on the billfold Home week if you will. Saturday November 22, JFK
Day. SS-20 will also play an acoustic show at 5 in the afternoon on the
same day. We are hoping to host an open forum and have some fun at Shake
it records in Northside. I have no doubt that this story will push presidential
politics off the Major Media outlets, so stay tuned. Robert “Jughead “Sturdevant.
on 2-11-87, Manwich opened for 63 eyes. The band referred to this as the "Wild Turkey" gig... all the girls in the band showed up early and drank a shitload of Turkey...
I'll make a few excuses. Few days back I lost a big bank of messages,
pfffft gone! I noticed awhile after it happened, I'm like, where did the
mexican pig torture pic go?? ohhh.....After stewing for a day or two and
failing to think my way out of this situation, I attempted a manual resurrection,
and man alive that just wasn't happening. maybe over the course of the
next few YEARS i'll fix a few if i saved the emails. But it was all enough
on my fragile constitution that I decided henceforth to let TOM handle
all my problems, so hopefully most of the world is part of creepspace:

I'll make no excuses. I do have one more DVD to do for the Studio 2086 compilation DVD set... It's coming around. Life got in the way. I told my kids of some of the acts we did at the JC and they didn't believe me so I sent them to Bryce's endeavor to compile a huge amount of calendar info and pics. Now they believe me! Great job Bryce, of keeping something great alive There was a synergy: people like Bill and Clem, Pauli and Jughead, Dave Davis, Tiny and Shorty, an improbable dichotomy that some how worked. Add the paneling falling off the walls, enough mold for a penicillin factory but I think it was the shithole johns that held it all together. That and the Foster's...I got the idea of flying the front monitor in a dream. Lots of people asked me which was my favorite JC act. It's easy: DOA hands down. Their version of 'Singing in the Rain' knocked me out. Dementia Precox was up there. I think Suicidal Tendencies were some of the most talented players to walk in the place. Damn, there were so many! One NYE, we were doing 5 bands: 45 minute sets, line check and go. It's like 11:30 and I got a band started and ran to the john. I burst in the door and there's like a dozen guys just standing around. Everybody looked at me like I had 2 heads. 12 guys hanging out in THAT bathroom....I knew something was up. I did my business and went back to the sound board. I went back the next day to sort through the mess of wires on the stage and said something to Shorty. He chuckles with a Pall Mall stuck to his lower lip and says in that I've-smoked-Pall Malls-all-my-life voice, "Ah there was some fat chick in there givin' blow jobs for a buck!" I caught the crabs once in my life... from the JC shitter. I shoulda known better. A friend of mines son wears Liberty spikes. His dad hates it. I told him he's an old fuck. We had a laugh. Where's Bill L? Soowwsage, Ace! He split his head wiiidddeee open!
ha ha ha secret to the wise... joettamlickteig@yahoo DO NOT tell anyone! !!
So, I stopped in to the Northside Tavern for a beer last night and struck up a conversation with a guy named Dave who used to, back in the day, play in a Cincinnati punk band called the F***ing C*unts. He had fond memories of the Jockey Club, remembered Ho Ho Records, the Pods, Jughead, etc.
Howdy! Ms.Joetta here to say what the @#&*? Who is monitoring this
awesome site anyway? I would love to hear from whomever it is that responds
to this bible of a web page! BUT please do not respond from this
address. Follow the dots behind... Jockey Club memories forever! Shorty

Greetings from New Jersey to Bryce, Bill Leist, Jughead, Handsome Clem Carpenter, Dave Davis, Dave Lewis, Chris Lewis, Todd Witt and anyone else who was active at the JC in the 80's. Bryce, you've done a really great job on the JC site. The photos in particular bring back vivid memories and the calendar is really exhaustive; although I see no mention of the night that Blanco Nombre played with the Insect Surfers from DC and absolutely no one was there. I would like everyone to know that Chuck Swanson and I have started a site www.blanconombre.com. It will tell the whole story of the band from its Jockey Club beginnings. Chapter One is already posted. This tells the story of the band before the girls arrived. In time, we plan to have downloadable recordings of our surf instrumentals on the site. My favourite JC shows were the two nights that the Dead Kennedy's played, and really early on I was impressed with Somebody that Dave Davis played in. NYC is great. There is a club here called the Mercury Lounge which is very similar to the JC. It's on Houston Street. Well, that's about all, Best regards to everyone, John Murray
Hello, My name is John, I sang for The Fluid. Pete was our road
manager for several years and we were also friends in NYC
within the last 8 years or so. I've lost contact info for him.
We're reuniting after 15 years. Pete's a part of the story. If you
have any email, etc. please pass it on to me or forward this to him. Many
thanks! John
Thanks for posting these pictures of the old Jockey Club in Newport. I went to a lot of these shows between 82-88. I just found an old ticket stub from the Lords of the New Church show on May 21st. I'll scan it and send it to you. Chris
The best years of my life. I am even in some of the pictures. RIP Jesse.
Is there any way to get a copy or cd-r burn for review of the surf material?
Please check my websites. Thanks! Phil Dirt

Hey, Got a correction and a couple of additions for the Jockey Club web site. First, on the schedule page, 6/29/1985 shows TSOL playing. This is not correct because TSOL cancelled that night. Mexican Pig Torture was scheduled to open for TSOL and wen
Starting in about '85, I started piling in the car with my cronies from Dayton and make the trip to the Jockey on a regular basis. I was but a young pup, but the chance of not being able to get in the door was a small price to pay. Although I have many memories of sitting outside the club listening to bands play and chomping at the bit, I did slip in from time to time and witnessed quite a few moments of punk rock history. Still horrified by the restrooms..however they were rivaled by Brookwood Hall in years to come. Frank Harmon

I WANT TO SHARE MY FIRST J.C. EXPERIANCE W/ ALL YOU RELICS. IT WAS WINTER 83 AND THE AUBURNAIRES WERE PLAYING. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I SAW THEM AS WELL. THE PLACE WAS FOR THE MOST PART EMPTY BUT THE BAND AND PLACE BLEW MY MIND. Dont' forget the Fanatics. Played the Jockey Club in the early years. Mike Martin (guitar), Steve Ewan (drums) and Greg McAvoy (bass). Steve Ewan also played somewhere in time with AK 47 and Mike Martin played with SS 20. Still a Punk
A few weeks ago I bought a ticket to a Gang of Four show here in Houston. The show was scheduled for a Tuesday night at a club called the Meridian. It was the first concert I had bought a ticket for in the 7 years I've lived in Houston. The Gang of Four's web page said 9 PM was the starting time. It did not mention any opening acts. Maybe the club web page did and I should've checked. Anyway, I bought a ticket in advance, which had a rip off "service" fee attached, and then had to pay $5 to park when I got to the club. I got in the club around 8:45 and saw there were TWO opening acts and that the main act would start around 11 PM. My heart sank. Two opening acts on a Tuesday night for a show that starts at 9 PM. What are people thinking? Who is at a Gang of Four show but a 38 year old punk rock has-been like me who has to be at work the next day? I had figured on possibly one opening act. I had something to read like I always did when I went to clubs in Cincinnati. I never could stand all the damn noise without something to read and tune it out. But the club was so fucking dark. The bar had a little light. I guess I could've sat there If I had really wanted to. But I was not going to drink. It used to be I could walk home from Short Vine. In Houston, I have to drive home. All my Jockey Club days I did not drink so it never mattered. In Cincinnati I could always read and I had friends to talk with. I went to the clubs to see my friends. If the band was interesting that was a bonus. I don't know any of the punk rock has-beens in Houston. I looked at the other people at the show and wondered if any of them were like the people I knew in Cincinnati. Though since it was so fucking dark, I could not really see the other people. In addition to being a punk rock has-been, in Houston I am a punk rock nobody. I missed my Cincinnati friends. And what about the cigarette smoke? I can't stand it anymore. Back in the day I'd be in a bar every night. How many nights did I spend in Sub Galley? What a fine dump that was.On many weekends I'd be at Turfway or River Downs with my father and the smoke in those places was thick. I used to okay with the smoke. At the Meridian the smoke got to me after five minutes. I watched the opening band set up for the 9 PM starting time. I was thinking I could not take it for two hours. I hardly gave a shit about most of the bands 20 years ago. I sure don't care today. The thought of two opening bands in that smoky, so fucking dark club for two hours was more than I could stand. Not able to read, no friends, no alcohol. I left after about 15 minutes. I really wanted to see Gang of Four but it was all too much. Somebody wrote "You can't go home again." Well.. I'd be fine at a BPA/ Human Zoo show in the presence of my comrades. But other than that, I guess I've pretty much hung up my hockey stick. Neil Aquino

Hello: The Hospital Records reunion show at the Southgate House was quite a blast and it was great to see so many friends. BPA rocked, of course. Many thanks to Darren Blase for putting on a wonderful bash. There's only one problem: I have no photos of the Human Zoo portion of the show. I lent my camera to a friend but the photos all came out blurry. Does anyone have some photos they would be willing to share? Please email me. Also, someone was taking video of the show. I'd love to get a copy of that as well. Please advise if you took the video or know who did. Thanks! Karl Meyer interplanetarymusic@yahoo.com

Just had to drop a quick one line what a great site thanks for all the effort Bryce, and all. I just checked and the only band that I could find listed on the calendar that I played in was Perfect Jewish Couple. And I was only with them on their backing tape. Otherwise, I was there with Menage a Trois, the Beef reunion show, and (twice I think) The Nervous Pioneers. Info on Beef and The Nervous Pioneers (and the Verbs) is at http://www.neussubjex.net/zero/ Menage a Trois had Shari Lauter of Perfect Jewish Couple on violin and keys, Mark Chenault on drums and me on alto sax and guitar. It was our only gig and we where probably with PJC that night. The Beef reunion show (est. 1976) was with The Verbs and maybe PJC, maybe and/or someone else. I know that The NP played there at least once, but have no idea who with. That's all for now but I'll be back with some tales and I'll dig up some picks that I have from the Beef reunion and send them in.
Best wishes from Tundra Town- Sorry to miss tomorrow night's show, and had intended to make the drive. Hello to all, and if you want to read mean reviews and see the summer's pictures check on In The Valley of the Shadow of the Handbarrow. no site--but there's things out there, anyway hey to Uncle Dave and everyone!

Subject: Human Zoo 20th Anniversary Reunion Cincinnati's notorious
Human Zoo, founded in 1985, marks its 20th anniversary this year.
In celebration, the original line-up will reunite for one gig only, at
the Southgate House in Newport, Kentucky on Saturday night, October 8th.
The Zoo will appear as part of a multi-band Hospital Records CD release
party, which will also reunite BPA, 11,000 Switches, Cointelpro, and Dementia
Praecox. Not only am I delighted to get back together with my Zoo cohorts,
but getting to see the other Hospital bands will be a real treat as well.
These cutting edge bands inspired me and many others to get off our butts
and start bands. Hope you can make it. Here is the Southgate House
calendar page. Click on October.

Excellent site, and what a walk down memory lane. Glad to see so many of you are still among the living and sad to see too many have gone before their time. Bentley, I can attribute many a good memory to being in company with you. I have many great stories, but alas, it is time to put my little one to bed. Cheers, Star
Hiya, Thanks for maintianing this website, it brings back so many great memories. I've posted here a few times looking for old friends but haven't had much luck. Someone actually sent me an e-mail a while back with jerry wells' phone number but unfortunately I moved and now I can't find it so if anyone has it, feel free to get it to me via e-mail. Also, if anyone has any info on Brendan Morriseys' whereabouts, I'd love to get into contact with him. Thanks! Tara Flynn (ne:wood) tflynn6@cinci.rr.com

Subject: 3/19/85 Ramones / Suicidal Tendencies
Hello Sirs: I remember the spring of 1985 and the Ramones and Suicidal Tendencies show was sold out. Man, did we really want to see that show! We had a one ticket. A friend, a talented artist he was, used tracing paper and he traced the front of the ticket and even the stamp on the back. The stamp was a little guy named Boris. We found similar paper that the ticket was printed on in 3 foot rolls at a local art shop. After cutting the paper to size, we made 9 fake tickets on copiers at Kinkos. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the other half of my torn ticket from the door man (I was glad that I just got in!). That was the best show I ever saw at the Jockey Club. Cheers!
Hey Everyone - I was hoping to touch base with anyone from the Columbus scene - Any of the guys from Painful Discharge, Human Sufferage, Kathy Bloom, Buffy, the Crazy mama's Crowd Etc. If anyone has any leads let me know. asantelli@mac.com
Glad to see the sites still up and running. I've got a cool idea for a book and video thing for all of us JC folks. Email me if you're interested. I have a publisher already lined up and anyone who contributes photos, etc. will get the package free. Anyway, email me. Jake
Bryce, thank you so very much for creating and maintaining this site. I, like so many others, frequented the JC and fortunately performed there on occasion. The posts have me alternately laughing, crying, screaming and sighing. I didn't see many national acts, only Chas Chasborne comes to mind, but was at a whole bunch of SS-20 jobs. Jughead was always the most likable chap to talk with. My 'Jockey Play' included The Barking Spiders and Boo Boo Ray but I don't remember a JC job when I was in Dennis the Menace. Must be my psychoactive medication. Nonetheless, was always a hoot to go there. What a scene!.....Tim Ray
I am almost 40 now, and I can’t believe so much water has gone under the bridge since the days of the Jockey Club. I was dragged there kicking and screaming by some very close friends of mine. I didn’t want to hear the rage and the volume and the angst. I was more a classic rock kind of guy and was starting to get into the REM and Athens Georgia sound. Once I was there for awhile however I discovered what fun it all was. To see my friend Pete stage diving at an SS 20 show was priceless and I even moshed around a bit myself. What fun! I had the honor of being at three shows in 1986 or 87 and being old enough to drink it was a great! In those days all of my best friends were musicians and were part of local Cinci bands of the day. They are the ones that introduced me to the music. It is interesting to note that last summer, I took my 14 year old daughter to the Warped Tour. There were the Vandals playing a set, and I noted that they also played the Jockey once upon a time. She listens to me and some of my old buddies talk about the club, she thinks we are the coolest adult authority figures because we can tell stories about Shorty , the club and the music, oh and the bathrooms! Ewwww. I once saw a young couple copulating in the hallway under a blanket, I got good and high once with a total stranger before entering the club on another occasion. Once I talked to Shorty between sets, just trying to wrap my head around an old man and this scene exploding all around me. He was cool, in a very gruff sort of way. I got the impression immediately that he wasn’t going to take any shit. I respected him. I found this site last year and tonight was just reminiscing about the old days. I have since become a professional Internet consultant and part time musician myself. I would like to offer any assistance you may need on this site, just in honor of the memories. I can host, I can build I can do anything you may desire for a website. Gratis of course since it would be my way of remembering a great time, when youth and music and booze came together in a very special way. Thanks Phresh~
Bryce, great site... just want to correct Witt on his hideous spelling:
that's Mark Mojdehi, who was in NEGRO... an un-PC name to be sure but not
That un-PC! The curious are invited to see what Witt's up to these days
this friday at the Mockbee, 2260 Central Parkway, Cinti. 10pm or so. I

Sophisticates. This would've been one of the 1st J.C. underground shows,

Witt!! I am surprised to find you looking for me. Glad to hear you are well. I check the JC guestbook a few times a week. I love when old friends pop up! I am with Matt Becher wondering about Steve Hull. Last I heard, he was in the military; very worrisome in this day and age. I love Wendy Darst and she was doing great last time I wrote her. I found pictures on-line and she looks great too!! I knew about Joetta and the fire. I sent Maniac Mike a copy of it from the paper. I had just left for Seattle when Myra was buried. It saddened me greatly to have to miss it. I loved Myra very much. Being broke, I couldn't be there. I still keep in touch with Tammy when I get off my ass and write. I am a bad penpal. I don't write enough. I will try to remedy that. I love getting e-mail. Living so far from Cincy, I don't get much news. Anything new? So what is up? I can be reached at the above e-mail address. Lots of the old addresses for me on this guestbook no longer work. I have 4 that work now and the above I check the most. So what is up? Later, Amy Miller

That Metallica story was in my last post—how sad. It must be the only
thing I remember. Also repeated is the “where is Joetta?” To add—Greg Cull,
you were a great roommate (you all were, from MacMillan house and everywhere!)
and I hope you are well, where ever you are. Bill Weber—2 nights ago I
was searching a local jukebox for “Hair of the Dog” to bang an ashtray
to (the Plaza was fine in the afternoon with plenty of free beer). Enough!
Thank you webmaster for all your work…

So nice to see this site is still up! One addition to the Metallica
at the Ramones show thread—this often seems to come up in my life as the
easiest nutshell explanation of those days…Becky Boyd and I were standing
between the bathrooms with our oilcans as that Ramones show let out. We
had a small dry spot in the lake of overflowed man toilet that always happened
when the place packed out, and we were just watching the hundreds of people
go by. We eventually realized that this small group of guys standing in
the sewage was indeed Metallica, as opposed to, say, guys that looked like
Metallica. We discussed telling them that maybe they didn’t want to stand
in that water, but didn’t get around to actually saying anything. I can
see it clear as day. They looked quite forlorn. Also, note to Trendy Wendy—that’s
sweet Joetta and I were your heroes. I hope it served you well having us
as role models—it’s a frightening thought. Joetta—where the hell
are you? I haven’t heard from you since the last spate of late night phone
calls in the mid 90s or so—what is up?!? And anyone else—it’s always good
to hear from you. I now play an electrified shovel called the Handbarrow,
and vocalize. Will be doing the jugband competition up here (Mpls) next
week with “Goober Sez Hey,” but I generally perform under my own name or
In the Valley Of the Shadow of the Handbarrow. I build giant things out
of paper mache and explode them on my head, strip to children’s and Spike
Jones 78s, whatever catches my fancy. We will be recording with our core
group of viola, kickdrum, guitar, and
handbarrow soon. Keep in touch everyone! Wendy Darst Wendyd83@yahoo
I'm doing a book called Going Underground: American Punk 1979-1992, which is focusing more on the Midwest and out of the way scenes than most any books have to date, and of course the Jockey Club is an essential part of that lore. I was wondering who took the Husker Du photos, because I need some shots of them, and would also like permission from you to quote some of the history of the place that you've written on the site. I interviewed Victor from the Edge a few weeks ago, and that opened the door to learning all about the cool scene you folks had there. I thought it really funny one of the emails about Charlie Pickett and the Eggs lighting the Skynyrd plane on fire. I grew up in South Florida, so Charlie Pickett was one of the first bands I saw, opening for the Gun Club, in 1982 or 83. Unfortunately I'm discovering all this just before I wrap up my book to send to the printer, but any help you could give me in the next couple of weeks would be great.
Just recently came across your site.....AWESOME!! The shot of the back wall of the JC with all the graffitii on it particuarly the spraypainted "unsocial disease" LOGO. That was my band (i was the drummer). I don't recall painting that, maybe one of my band members did it, maybe I was drunk at the time which was probably the case. Anyway, we (Tommy, Thomas, Carl, and Kevin) were from Lexington, and frequently made trips to the JC. Although unfortunatly "unsocial disease" never played at the club, we sure had some good times there!! thanks for the memories!!!, Tommy
Hello folks- I'm in Cincinnati for Christmas, freezing my Cuban ass off and digging out of ice and snow, while back home in Miami it's 73 degrees- brrr! After 3 months of collecting, archiving, and baking tapes from reel to reels, cassettes, and videos, I've finally managed to put together the material for the European CD compilation of The Edge. All total, there are 34 songs, including 2 recorded live at the Jockey Club, plus 8 videos, 4 of those from the JC. Now that those have been transferred to the digital domain, I'm sending them off to Europe for mastering. The final phase will be putting together photos and liner notes for the insert, so if anyone has any photos stashed away that they want to submit, contact me soon! Now that this project is wrapping up, I'm finishing recording with my new band, Last Gang In Town. Last week, Mikey Dread who produced "Bankrobber" and much of "Sandinista" for The Clash, was in the studio with us, mixing tapes for a dub/reggae tune I wrote called "Gone Astray". Hope to have mp3s of it up soon on our site: http://lastgang.com Got a call from Dan Reed not long ago- he asked me to play in a Chem Dyne reunion show, tentatively set for March, 2005 in Hamilton, Ohio. While culling through The Edge tapes, I found some live recordings I made when I played with Chem Dyne at the Jockey Club, and those are excellent quality- will have to transfer them to CD soon. Thanx, Victor Garcia-Rivera
I never had the chance to see a show at the Jockey club. so I am looking to add some piece of Newport/ Punk history to my walls. Does anyone know him , Remember him or know what has happened to him?? Thanks all for your time and Help!!! Mark Milner

Greetings from SS-20. Sorry to hear about Construction Clown. The site looks good. A boatload of memories flood back. For anyone interested you can download our new record at : http://ss20.net:78/ I plan to read all the new postings and will visit all the links . Thanks Bryce for all your good works! Jughead PS. I would love to hear from any and all old friends.
What if somebody was to make a Jockey Club Tribute Album, you know, for like charity or somethin', featuring bands of today playing songs of all the bands that called the JC home base. Sure, it's a pipe dream but it's fun to think about. So, what bands would play what songs? Let's start a Virtual Fantasy JC Tribute Album!! My first vote would be to have Los Straitjackets play a cover of Musical Suicide's Freak Show. That was our only instrumental and Jakki on bass was killer! We never got it recorded so the bass came through so I'd love to see it resurrected and given a chance at the big time! Anybody else have any ideas? Bill Igerent

Here is the text of the obituary from The Cincinnati Post if anyone's interested:
Raymond Thunder-Sky, artist
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He wore a hard hat and any number of outlandish clown outfits, usually
with ruffled Elizabethan collars. He carried Magic Markers and drawing
paper in a tool box and frequented construction sites.
Few knew Raymond Thunder-Sky's name, but he was a familiar figure around
town for three decades. He was a shy, quiet, rotund man who, without ever
intending it, became a Cincinnati icon.
Raymond Thunder-Sky died Thursday at his home, a resident home operated by the Catholic Care Corporation. He was 54.
His father was Richard Brightfire Thunder-Sky, the last full-blooded chief of the Mohawks. His mother was Irene Salatsky, the daughter of a Hungarian nobleman with ties to the Hapsburgs of Europe.
Although he never was formally diagnosed, his caregivers believed he had something akin to autism. This made it difficult for him to communicate verbally, but he made up for it by communicating through his artwork. And his themes were always tied to the never-ending cycle of demolition and construction.
Wherever the Cincinnati skyline was changing, Raymond would be there, drawing the scene in electric colors, creating the world the way he thought it should be, replacing ordinary buildings with Clown Suit factories, Card Trick manufacturing facilities and Native American freeways.
His ability as an artist was discovered only a few years ago, when a couple of caseworkers with the boards of mental retardation and developmental disability for Hamilton and Butler counties launched a program called "Art Thing," which later evolved into "Visionaries and Voices." The idea was to showcase the art some of their clients were creating. Raymond was one of the first Art Thing artists. In the first Art Thing exhibit in Over-the-Rhine in 2001, he sold four drawings for $100 each. His work later was exhibited in San Francisco, New York and Washington, D.C.
He is survived by a brother, Michael. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Arlington
Memorial Gardens. Other arrangements pending. Neidhard-Gillen Funeral Home,
Mt. Healthy, is handling arrangements.
Publication Date: 10-30-2004
It saddens me to report that Raymond Thunder-Sky (aka Construction Clown)
has died. According to the obituary in today's (11/2) Enquirer, he'd been
in a prolonged battle with cancer. Unforunately the obituary isn't online,
but it's worth picking up an Enquirer to check it out - what an amazing
character. Scott Bruno *
Subject: Jockey Club/ survivor of hurricane,
fuck you, Ivan
Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 15:00:09 EDT
From: Rockmaidenz@aol.com
Hey, it's me again, just wanted to let anyone who gives a fuck know
that we survived Ivan. That was the first and hopefully the
last hurricane I'll go through. We live close to the water and are
house was the hardest hit in the neighborhood. Luckily we
rent! We fled to Memphis, when we got back our living room ceiling
was caved in, the carpet was saturated and the back yard fence was gone.
I've never seen anything like it. Luckily we still have a roof and windows.
It's been so crazy here. We were
without power for about five days, a lot of people were without longer.
We had hot water, thanks to good OLE natural gas.
Still can't drink the stuff. Our neighbor ran us a line from his generator
and thanks to Direct TV we were able to enjoy football
that Sunday (GO VIKINGS) Sorry! Red cross was out driving around giving
out hot meals everyday twice a day for about
three weeks. We ate quite a few MRE(meals already made?) They are pretty
good, and really cool. It's still a mess here,
mostly trees. We live over by Perdido, the hardest hit. It's still
not open and down the street twelve people in a subdivision
died. I'm so Thankful, that we got out and had a home to come back
to. I'm even more thankful that were transferring to
Lemoore! I tell you, going through this reconfirmed that I'm not a
whiner. We were sweating our asses off, cleaning up debris
and then not having a cool house to come into sucked. But, it was better
than being dead. I can't believe how many whiny ass
people there are, bitching about not having power and material things,
please. And these were people that have a home.
Opened my eyes. Enough,I just wanted to let people know what happened.
If anyone wants to know more or has any
questions, shoot me an E-mail. It still looks like a war zone around
here. Until next time. Tammy
Hi, I wanted to respond to hanging out at Daryl's. If I remember correctly
it was above Rent a Record. Wondering if anyone
knows what happened to Daryl. He was my bud. Also a question, I could
swear I read, or heard that Metallica, dropped by The Jockey one night.
Can't believe me the goddess of metal missed that one. I need details,
my husband and I landed back stage passes for their upcoming show, here
in Pensacola. Also, were moving to Lemoore, Ca in November. It's
closest to Fresno. Is anything happening there, besides gangs? I'm so out
of the mix. Hey, Snare, if you read this E-mail me with your number, I've
lost it. Hard-core to the end Tammy(Z)
hey get this, it's been about 5 years since the jockey club remembered hit the web. I am thinking about putting on a 5 year anniversary show just kidding. Due to haziness I will never exactly know the debut date or the number of hits, and rightly so cuz who fuckin cares! But by my incalculable calculations I figure we're five. Kip's first guestlist entry is May of 2000 and I remember having the site up for a long time before I got hi-tech enough to have a guestlist. I'm glad a lot of you crazy kids have hooked back up. I hardly knew any of ya! I'm still waiting for a few friends to chime in. I sure had a few good times down there but alot of you had way better times it's easy to tell. Newport sure has changed but we will never forget when it was just plain ol nasty
No No No Tara. I am not talking about Jerry. Jerry lives in Northgate
and is still smoking lots of ciggs and playing guitar. I
would never call Jerry Burn out. He was and still is a good friend....I'm
talkin' about Burn Out. A short tennage drunken kid
with a mohawk that we all called Burn Out. He was always hung out in
Darryls space above the bookstore. I don't think Jerry
ever let him in his area....See Ya
Hey all! I'm seeing lot's of names that I remember...I posted here some
time ago and never got any responses. Bently! I remember you, I hung out
at the main st. apartment above Aquarious and I have pics from back then,
with you in them...Also, to "Joe Assclown" regarding "burnout" are you
talking about Jerry Wells? He was a great friend of mine and I don't know
what ever happened to him either. If anyone knows, let a gal know, eh?
If anyone remembers me, contact me, it would be great to hear from old
friends. I went by Tara Wood back then, a skinny little girl with a mohawk,
ring any bells? I have a bunch of old flyers from the J.C., a list
of people I'd love to hear from, and lots of great memories. Brian Falls,
I remember you!

greetings punks and punkettes! i'm a long time reader and a first time
writer to this site!!! hey, a while back somebody was asking about old
c.d.s, pictures, artifacts, tapes, 8 tracks, plaster casts, posters, etc.
by a band called "the edge". who were these guys? i spent most of my 'formative'
years at the j.c. and have no recollection of them. maybe it was all of
the fosters i drank and clove cigarettes i smoked but i remember most of
the great local bands like "perfect jewish couple", "major morgan and the
waste baskets", and "ZZ-20" to name a few. "the edge" must have really
been something if, twenty years after the fact, a major label is trying
to do a retrospective on them with cd-rom, dvd and all that stuff. if anyone
knows where i can buy their CDs, albums, posters, or even a biography or
history of the group (authorized only, please!) let me know because i've
been to
seven record stores in town and nobody has ever heard of them. thanks
a million and keep on rockin', all you punkers! david heinkamp
Hey - Just wondered if anyone would be interested
in owning a table and set of 4 chairs that once sat in the Jockey Club.
I have enough other memorabilia from the JC and I don't really have enough
space for this anymore. The chairs are in okay condition but the
table needs some work and can probably be restored (the top is peeling
up). If you can haul them away from my house, you can have them for
free. If interested, email Pat Patton at ppatton1@cinci.rr.com and
I will give you more detailed information.

Howdy JC cyber denizens- a label in Europe has
contacted me about releasing a CD retrospective of The Edge. This will
be a CD Rom with audio and video and will include photos as well as audio
and video. While I have a lot of material stored away, there are some holes
I would like to fill, either stuff I don't have, or for which I'd like
a first generation copy- let me know if you can help out with any of the
following: 1] Recording of The Edge live on WAIF-FM on Michel Reilly's
show on September, 1983- John McCarthy has a reel to reel tape of this,
but I don't know if he's still around- anyone with info on John [he used
to manage The Edge and NK Spies, Steve Killian's band before he joined
Snare & The Idiots] let me know 2] Video of the Edge at the Jockey
Club April 1985- I have a VHS tape of this but Mick Edd had the original-
I think I saw a post by Mick somewhere here but Mick if you're reading
and have the original copy let me know 3] Steve Stenken and the rest of
the video
crew from Latonia who filmed our video for MTV-
I have the master finished video, but would like to get the original copies
of the Bogarts show we played with the Dead Milkmen, that was used for
most of the footage- my copy on VHS has slightly deteriorated. The
original would be nice to use instead! 3] a copy of the video that Flipside
Magazine took of the Edge at our show in Los Angeles in 1985 where we played
with Conflict, No FX and Government Issue- I was promised a copy of this
and never got it, I know this wasn't filmed in Cincy but if any punk collectors
have come across this on the net and have a copy, let me know 4] a video
of The Edge when we opened for Dead Kennedys in Syracuse, New York on April,
1985- once again, not in Cincy but if someone has a copy let me know- I'm
sure this show [at least the DK portion] has circulated somewhere 5] a
copy of the "Alternative Allston" video filmed in LA- done by a cable show
with ties to Flipside, I never got a copy but I've had letters from people
in California who saw it on TV. I'm going to be including several live
recordings of The Edge from the Jockey Club, if anyone has any they'd like
to contribute, let me know, I may not have them. Also would be nice to
have more photos, let me know what you have- my email is roquero@aol.com
Gracias to anyone that can help out- Victor Garcia-Rivera, http://members.aol.com/lastgangintown

tonight, but we can still go see D.O.A. on May 16th at Sudsy's. We can
still be a club without a building. The shows were what brought us together,
but it must have been more than that to have kept us communicating after
all these years. Just a thought. Snare

Music Scene. ( I came on the scene at Sudsy’s in 1991.) However,
I am friends with many who did party there, I love the site & hearing
everyone’s memories. I happened to be downloading some music the
other night and I happened to do a random search for the “jockey club”.
Assuming I would find nothing I was amazed to come across Raw Power live
from the Jockey Club. Looking at the calendar on the web page
I’m sure it is our beloved Jockey Club”, although the date I have is 6-9-1984.
How about that! Freaky, hunh? I downloaded the whole show.
I’m listening to it right now. Let me know if you would like to check
it out or if you want to have any of it to post on the website. Karyn

Hello! Man this makes me feel old! I was the drummer
in 30 Pieces... We had the opportunity to play there twice if I
remember correctly... Once, was with the Speed
Hickeys (??). And the other was the Jockey Club Final weekend bash! We
played with Dag Nasty I believe. My memory is very foggy from that time
period.. (must be the drugs) Anyway, I remember
the smell, the look, almost getting busted out
back for smoking..... That final weekend show held a particular memory
for
me, and our bass player Dave. We had driven back
to my apartment to get my wallet that I left behind. We got there in just
enough time to find my girlfriend pulling outta the driveway with some
guy! Whoa! What a surprise! To make a long story short. Instead of beating
the crap outta this guy, which was my first instinct. I wrote her off,
and played THE MOST AGGRESSIVE show I had ever played. I put serious dents
in my snare head from that night! I still have a recording of that show.
If anybody remembers us, I'd be glad to make em a copy... Thanx for
the memories! Bill, Dave, Joby, you guys helped me from getting arrested
that night! -Jay

I can't believe someone else remembers that! I'm
responding to a message from Tammy a year ago. I regret admitting that
I've neglected this sight for quite awhile. Anyway, I was kidnapped by
Broken Bones. I was hugging them goodbye and they
closed the van door and drove off to their motel.
Their cockney accents were so thick I couldn't understand a word they said.
They didn't do anything to me except laugh at me and steal the tiny amount
of weed and a bottle of RUSH that I had in my
purse. HA HA! Remember that stuff? It was like
sniffing glue. Jesus, what the hell? I also remember countless after hours
parties of Amy's. I, with many others, was skinny dipping with Wadi from
Exploited on the night the pool turned purple.
I also remember a party (I was tripping at the
time) where there was a shaving cream fight and someone's head got lit
on fire. Let me tell you, at the time, that was somethin to see. I'll never
forget it, like so many other FANTASTIC times. And yes, I
do love telling the stories, over and over and
over, to everyone I know (and don't know) to this day! Love Always, Allegra

and am busy reminiscing. I remember many of the shows -- still have
the Angry Red Planet tee I traded for my flannel. I think a dozen
of us were there that night. Honestly, I remember the people a hell
of a lot more than the bands. Anyway, would love to hear from

aka Raymond Thunder-Sky is one of the artists who is a member in Base Gallery
at 1225 Main St in Cincinnati, as well as, Visionaries + Voices Gallery
in the Essex Bldg. (also in Cincinnati). He is a genius who does not speak
but makes incredible visual art that illustrates police stations and other
buildings being torn down and re-built into clown factories. He often has
the electrical wiring illustrated in the bldg. or will sometimes draw the
plumbing layout along with I-beams. His mother was from a Royal family
in Europe and his father was Chief Thundercloud who starred in the 1950's
B movies with Roy Rogers. They lived in Hollywood. Raymonds dad died when
he was young and his mom, who was blind brought him back to Cinti.to live.
His uncle who was in the construction business helped raise him and would
take hime to the circus when he was young. He started wearing clown costumes
full time in his youth. I believe he is Autistic but it is'nt important,
it's what he does on paper. He is the last surviving Mohawk Indian in the
country. His lunchbox has art supplies in it and construction workers and
clowns are like gods to him. He is really a first class guy who is often
misunderstood due to his handicap. His art is currently in several galleries
across the country that deal in Outsider Art. He is the stuff legends are
made of. I remember the wide hallway with people sitting on each
side and the walls papered with the xeroxed advertisements for bands and
peeking into that secret old bar room on the right side as you walked into
the club. One night the Violent Femmes helped me park my car in the prking
lot (unknowingly that they were the lead act). After I got inside and got
a table with my friends, they came in playing-the drummer was playing a
marching drum strapped around his neck and waist. Junta was one of the

I read a story about a punk rock riot that took
place in Montreal last week. It seems that Canadian customs agents did
not allow The Exploited to enter the country. The Exploited were headed
to play a show in Montreal. But they got turned back. Once the concertgoers
found out the show was nixed, they erupted in anger. They trashed the venue
and turned over cars. Some of the overturned cars were set on fire as well.
I should have done something like that when Johnny Thunders got canceled
at the JC the first time he was supposed to play. Some of you will recall
that night. In retrospect, it seems I took the news way to easy.

I had parties after shows whenever I had a place...and the stories would
burn your ears off. So many great parties... and bands would come too.
The Exploited turned my pool purple with their hair. My mom kicked out
Henry of Black Flag at one party. JFA skated Straight St. and thought I
was nifty for mentioning it. 45 Grave gave me and Tammy records and toys
the day after a party to thank me. Sam of Fang fame threw beer bottles

I had some fun parties. Ahh time passes so quickly.

of the hohorecords stuff. We looked at the jockey club website.
We never knew how cool that place was. I had no idea that all those
great bands had played there. I used to be into alot of those bands:
dead kennedys, exploited, minor threat, black flag. Never knew how
big it was. I just always heard about it from you. But!
I just wanted to let you know that I read the whole thing and actually
in the past 4 years there has been this place called the void that has
been the punk club of cincinnati. It's definetely more of the jockey
club type of thing than the southgate house is. It used to be on
short vine like behind sudsy's and then it moved into northside on hamilton,
but it just closed on july 25th. But the owner guy, Ryan, he is trying
to find a new place for it. I just thought it would be nice to let
you know about it because it is kinda the modern day jockey club.
Alot of well known, national acts play there or have played there.
Buckaroo Bandits used to be one of the fav bands for that place.
but anyway...

Subject: Greg Cull
Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2003 12:19:29 EDT
From: ROQUERO@aol.com
Bryce mentioned Greg Cull. Greg was one of the
people who epitomized the independent, do-it-yourself ethic of the 80's
punk/ underground scene. You could always count on him to do low cost t-shirts
with his Screen Printing business. He even screen printed some album covers
for SS-20. He also was the only harmonica player in the local punk scene.
He sang and played harmonica with the Boondocks. I think I still have in
my archives a reel to reel tape of some sessions I produced for the Boondocks
at their space in the "Big Four Building". Too bad I don't have a reel-to-reel
player to play them anymore. I remember that one of the recordings we did
was a rocking cover of "America" from "West Side Story". Hearing a punk
version of "America" was totally mind blowing for me. That was one of the
first songs I heard when I came to the United States from Cuba. The lyrics
were pretty ironic considering my family had just come to this country:
"I like to be in America! Okay by me in America! Everything free in America
For a small fee in America" Along with Matt Becher on bass, "Hardcore"/"Husker"
Bob Butler on guitar and Nick from SS20 on drums, the Boondocks were one
of the best and most overlooked bands of the JC era. Greg also played harmonica
on our recording of "Bumblebee". That was the flipside of the Edge single
for "Just An Illusion". Basically, "Bumbleebee" was just meant to be a
goofy throwaway for a B-side. I played the guitars, banjo and did the high
harmony vocal, while Dan Sokatch played bass and did the lead vocal. There
weren't even any drums on the record, and the song only had 2 chords! Once
Greg laid his magic harmonica track on top, the song had a hook! It got
played a lot on WOXY and made the People's Choice Top Ten Countdown several
times in April 1987. I heard it a lot on the radio while I was driving
my car. Someone even told me that they heard one of the Clifton cover bands
doing a version of my tune. I would have loved to have done some more recordings
with Greg, but never got the chance. Another favor Greg did for us was
let us practice at his pad. After we got evicted from the Big Four building,
we [The Edge}rehearsed at his communal punk rock apartment at 109 W McMillan.
The door was always left open there. You never knew who was gonna show
up. It was a true punk rock commune. Bands practiced in the basement. Greg
had all his screen printing equipment and inks there as well. The last
time I saw Greg was when The Edge were getting ready to do our Summer 1987
tour. We were doing a show at the Jockey Club, a few days before we were
to depart to Minneapolis, cross the border to Canada, and make our way
down the US West Coast. Greg was supposed to come on the road with us as
our "roadie" and "merch" guy [selling our t-shirts and records on the tour].
We were waiting for him to show up at our JC show that evening so that
we could go over the details with him. He never came. I was a bit concerned,
as he was always reliable, and I spoke with some mutual acquaintances after
we played. One of our friends had a message for me : "Greg says he's at
the airport in Louisville and ran into some problems, he won't be here
tonight but he'll call you later". A day or two passed. I finally received
a call from Greg- the day before we left for Minneapolis to begin the tour.
He told me that he was out of town and couldn't make it to Cincy. He asked
that I pick him up along the way on the road. In the meantime, I had heard
from several friends that Greg was in trouble and that he had run afoul
of the law. I won't go into details, but something was up. I asked him
about this, and he confirmed it was true, even though he wouldn't explain.
As much as I wanted to help him, I told Greg I couldn't try crossing the
border to Canada with him. At the time, I wasn't even a US citizen. All
I had was a Cuban passport with a picture of 2 year old toddler Victor
in it. On the previous Edge tour in 1985, when the band crossed the border
to the US after returning from Canada, I had been detained by Immigration.
I'll never forget sitting in the office at Customs, under a portrait of
a smiling Ronald Reagan, while immigration officers ran FBI checks on me,
strip searched my band members, and constantly asked me "why haven't you
become a US citizen?". The last thing I needed was to get caught crossing
the border with an expired Cuban passport, transporting someone on the
lam. It would have been a sucky end to the tour to get deported back to
Fidel World. So I politely declined Greg's offer. I never saw him again,
although he did call occasionally. He still emails me from time to time.
I hope he has all his problems resolved. Greg played a major part in supporting
the bands that played the Jockey Club [as well as doing merch for the club
itself- who can forget the memorable JC t-shirt that he made, showing Shorty
dressed as Santa Claus?]. I'm sending Bryce a photo of me from '86 with
Greg's Shorty Claus shirt. Rock on Greg!

From: ROQUERO@aol.com
Reading some of the recent entries on the Guest
List brought back more memories, though not neccesarily directly dealing
with the Jockey Club. I remember we [The Edge] played the last show at
JR's in Clifton. I still have the flyers. It happened Saturday, April 5,
1986 with the Libertines and Doc and the Pods. That was a fantastic show,
great music, the club was packed to the rafters [not hard to do with tiny
JR's], and we got paid well [what a change of pace!]. That summer, JR's
became BW3's and Sudsy Malones opened its doors a few months later. When
Sudsys first opened, our bassist at the time, Karl Meyer, paid a visit
to Cioffi [Sudsy's jefe] to bring him an Edge record and get us a gig.
Cioffi told him he wasn't considering booking bands at the time. He had
Pigmeat Jarrett, a cool old blues piano player, on weekends, and wanted
to keep things low key. Not long after, some of the other JC bands managed
to book gigs there. Cioffi saw the potential for bucks and turned it into
a regular alternative music venue. I think the Summer of 1986 was a turning
point in the Cincy scene.
Clifton started stealing the thunder from the
Jockey Club. That same year, Dan Reed started booking Bogarts, which liberalized
its booking policy [for more on that, go check out the interview I did
with Neus Subjex fanzine, it's on their web page and also on the Edge web
page- if you want the link, send me an email] . Bash Riprocks had a hot
summer fling with acid crazed kids before the cops shut it down [I could
start a whole post on Bash Riprocks, but those of you who went there for
its short life span as an alternative music club know what I'm talking
about]. CJ's Down Under [not sure if it was called that then or if the
name changed later], which was a lesbian bar, also started booking shows
under the tutelage of Dan Reed. I remember a show we played there with
the Dead Milkmen and Buck Naked and the Bare Bottom Boys, "the world's
only Pornobilly band" from Omaha, Nebraska. Shipleys/ Top Cats also got
into the act. Bill Leist had "retired" from booking the Jockey Club that
summer. I recall that most of the shows we booked at the JC in '86, I booked
personally with Shorty himself. The lack of a steady booking agent [I believe
Jerry Adams/ AKA Ashley Allen, Dave Dunkum of the Idiots and Ken Sims also
booked various shows in Bill's absence], coupled with the hot summer [the
JC was notorious for its lack of air conditioning] helped start the exodus
towards Clifton. I think there was a wider variety of places to play in
Cincy in 1986 than before or since- just my impression. But there's only
one JC, and the JC crept on another year and a half. It's never been
replaced!

to me greg cull was the t-shirt guy. he musta
taken a liking to my band, but i think he liked all the JC groups, anybody
who wanted shirts. he did em cheap, and followed instructions well but
was an artist in his own right. put us in his catalog of punk offerings.
kinda quiet guy if i recall. a visit to his "big four building" loft was
always an experience to drink in. manually operating the ancient otis elevator.
marble staircases. from his windows you could see where the north and south
75's merge into ft washington way and it was right outside so close you
could touch it. mind blowing. i wanted to be one of the bands that played
in that artist's haven, many groups were made homeless by the big fire
in '87. I remember the auburnaires space down on street level was rescued
by newly ex-AA scott porter who defied fire and firemen to enter and save
guitars and stuff, what a hero. seemed like greg disappeared roundabouts
then. i hear he bicycled off into the sunset ne'er to been seen again.

Hockey Punk, you sound like one of those people
when you ask 'em for directions they tell ya not in street names but in
bar locations. I like less it seems: Plaza, lame-ass bad-vibey split-in-two
room, barely nice for awhile when they ran an upstairs dance scene and
patio--recall Cioffi's wierd attempt to make it an unauthorized Rock Hard
Cafe; received a cease and desist for his efforts. I still scratch my head
at the bizarre-as-hell fact that his Sudsy's is to this day still alive
and well; but a place where nationals would cycle thru? still find that
really odd. Top Hat-bad news, terrible come down after the JC, making Newport
seem "scuzzy again - for the first time!". Metro paid well; first good
money gig, never made any money after a Jockey show, unspoken policies
long in place about exploiting the locals--that's showbiz!-habits to support!?
wasn't in it for the bux, just for the chance of sex. Shorty's/Chilly's--a
wrong turn in the local scene as well. Daniel's: once or thrice had moments
of super-rockin there; small enough to feel like you packed the place,
and so was JR's (BW3 corner)-the best of the non-Jockey locales....cool
bands every weeknight, no cover, coolest jukebox in town (think:Comet),
& Gary Burke--a good guy. UC's Rhine Room was my brief foray into UC
college life as I hung around with The Pods boys as they drank mass pitchers
in the daytime. I smoked grass, albeit very carefully. Their gigs were
good and promoted well, Sean Daley, right? Hot Shotz/Top Cats--good times
I guess? Coulda been better....but, The Jockey Club was very good. The
best. Mickey's, ABCD, Bash Riprocks, Iron Gate, Pickle Barrel, 5th Amendment,
Murphy's Pub and scores of others all seem unimportant....Hey I've been
seeing all my fave bands in Columbus lately, (nobody comes here) and gotta
tell ya I found a pretty wild scene at a club named HIGH 5....a real fun

The Jockey Club was very good. So was Chilly's
and Shorty's. They were in the same location on Short Vine. First one,
than the other. They both went under. The Top Hat, around the block from
the Jockey Club, was not my favorite. It was cramped. Sudsy's was always
there for you. It had to be where the most people saw the most shows. Whatever
the problems you might of had with the place, it was what there was. The
Plaza was okay. I went to The Metro downtown a few times. I liked that
place. Beat Club was okay for a Sunday night when nothing else was going
on. Sub Galley on Short Vine was so dirty and dingy, it deserved credit
for being as such. Paris was in Over The Rhine. I liked the place well
enough, but I got tired of people asking me for money to watch my car every
time I tried to park to go to the place. Daniel's always smelled like a
sewer. But Daniel's was a good place for last call. There was once a club
on Short Vine where the BW Three is now. I can't recall the name. I got
drunk at the bowling alley on the UC campus once. In that student center
building. Whatever it was called. The big cafeteria at UC was a hangout
for a lot of people. I spent time there. I got drunk with Wildman Walker,
the WEBN sports guy, a few times at the Norwood Cafe. He's an okay guy
despite being on that station. The Cove was my hangout much more than the
Highland Coffee House. I lived over the Cove for a few years. There was
an Irish bar near the courthouse downtown I went to a few times. I don't
recall the name of the place. It no longer exists. The Bearcat, across
for Hughes High School, was owned by the brother of Councilman Cissell.
That place was okay. I avoided Mt. Adams. But I did go to the Blind Lemon
one afternoon with Scott Ritter. May he rest in peace. Annies was okay
on Kellogg. River Downs on Kellogg had cheaper beer than Riverfront Stadium.
I can't recall the name of the bar on High Street in Columbus I walked
into and saw Dan Leonard drinking. I saw bands at the Brew House. I never
hit any bar in Mt. Washington or on the West Side of town past Northside.
I feel I'm leaving a lot of places out of my list. Neil Aquino.

Hello- Yesterday I was on the phone w/ Heather
Prescott, and she asked me if I had checked out this site yet. It is testament
to the indelible impression this place made that we'd be wasting hours
of LD time rehashing those years, and still figuring out some of what happened.
Anyway, due all the alcohol damage I often wonder if I remember anything,
especially shows, since I think I was out pretty much every night from
1983-1998 or so...but these pictures were from some of the most major events
I remember at the Jockey. Being basted in henry r.'s copious sweat at that
Black Flag show, the near death by stage dive at Husker Du (some one caught
me by the ANKLES?!?!), a bewildered Metallica standing inthe men's bathroom
backwash as the Ramones' crowd emptied out...blah blah on forever. Thank
you for the pictures of the ladies room, as that was truly the hangout
at one time. Anyway, color me impressed. If I had any photos I would share
them, but I needed both hands for the oil cans. Does anyone else remember
drinking some left over years old bicentennial or something beer Shorty
was handing out, or their stories about feeding the inmates of the jail
on white castles? and how the gutters ran with half digested sliders? Or
so Bud said. I can't believe I remember anything. I'll keep checking
for photos and all! Thanks! Wendy Darst (red head in Manwich, former full

From: "Pickett, Charles" <cpickett@BooseCasey.com>
CHARLIE PICKETT here. Just wanted to chime
in with an outsider's view of the Jockey Club. You all had a wonderful
scene in Cinn/Newport. From 1984 through 1988, we (Charlie Pickett
and the Eggs, later, Charlie Pickett and the MC3) played several hundred
shows all over the country. The Jockey Club audience was EXCEPTIONAL.
You seemed to be fun-loving and very nice ... and seemed like you just
wanted to raise a little dust on a weekend night. First trip (not on the
JC gig calendar but unless I've got Alzheimer's, it was summer of 1984)
to the JC was a great boost for us. We had spent the summer gigging
the the Northeast and were centered in NYC. Seemed like every dope
dealer in greater NY was waiting for us. Johnny Salton developed
a big uh, problem and he and I fell out. He flew back to Miami the
day before we were to leave for Minneapolis to play the 7th Street Entry
in Minneapolis and audition for the Twin-Tone records folks. I asked Mike
Pettit (Miami guy, Psycho Daisies) to pay bass and asked Dave Froshneider
to switch to lead guitar. WITH NO PRACTICE in that line-up (Johnny
Galway on drums), we left for our first show, the Jockey Club. When
we got there, we were met by Joe Ham, I believe, who either played or ran
sound that night. Everyone seemed real normal to me (maybe because
I was born in Athens, Ohio). Anyway, enough people showed up to have
some BIG FUN. At the end, people were onstage singing our signature
song, If This Is Love, Can I Get My Money Back?, and one guy was running
around with a large American flag as a cape. We played well and had
a great time. The audience reaction calmed our jitters about not
having played together before. We played one more show--either in
Chicago or Madison--then went on to Minneapolis and were signed to Twin-Tone.
I believe the opening act that first trip was The Thangs or SS-20.
And as sweet icing on the cake, we met some great girls. We played the
Jockey Club several other times--always to a nice turnout for the "not
big" band we were. Once we played around the time they blew the bridge
over the Ohio river just down the hill on US 27 (which as you know, ran
directly in front of the Jockey Club). When we played there in the
winter of 1985, we stayed 1-2 nights with some folks that were squatting
above a barbeque place in Newport. In the morning (about noon for
bands), we would wake up with the smell of the slow-cooked barbeque seeking
up through the old wood building. We'd rush straight down and have
barbeque for breakfast--eating it on the sidewalk around the corner.
The last time we stayed with these folks, a couple of them (an oriental
girl and a kid who aspired to be a DJ) rode home with us to Miami.
We were gigging our way home so the trip lasted two weeks or so. The Jockey
Club was well run, a pleasant contrast to most of the punk clubs of the
day. The room handled sound well and we loved its roots. I
stayed in touch with one girl I met there for many years and always tell
my wife about the Jockey Club every time we pass through Cinn/Newport.
For anyone who remembers us, Johnny Galway and Mike Pettit passed away
(much too young). Dave Froshneider owns and runs a pack-and-mail
store in Los Angeles. I'm a married lawyer with a six year old son.
Road Manager, Richard Shelter, is still involved in the business side of
music in L.A. and Johnny Salton has kept the Psycho Daisies going to this
day. I play with them occasionally. However, Salton has enphlusema
(can't spell it) bad. We all love to rock. Bless you folks
at the Jockey Club. I will remember you forever. Best wishes
and much love to all.

I saw the Violent Femmes at the Jockey Club!
They filed in from the back, following the drummer. They stopped right
at my table! I saw Love and Rockets, there, too--Didn't their van
get stolen? I remember after a Husker Du show people had been slamming
in the bathroom and knocked the stalls off the wall. Upon seeing
the damage, Shorty said, "If I catch anybody doing that again...I'll give
'em a hickey right on their haid!" And Circle Jerks and Black Flag,
and countless others. I think TSOL played there too, although I may
not remember...

I was just watching a few minutes of a Vancouver

I was younger, I was walking down York Street, wearing a Vancouver Canucks
hockey jersey, and this white van slowed down and started following me.
It turned out that D.O.A. was in the van. One of the D.O.A. people shouted,
"Hey, where did you get that?" That was a good moment in my life.

grave. When they played at the Jockey, I was
somewhat disabled with a bum foot. Good OLE Amy
Miller, brought them to my house, I think they were driving a limo, or
maybe a Hearst? They were so cool. They gave us toys to play with, fake
fingers, etc. That was the thing about punk bands the ones we met and partied
with, were all very down to earth. Except for Battalion of Saints, they
kidnapped Allegra, does anyone remember that? It may have been Broken Bones,

My story? Hmmm...well, I first got into the scene
in 1984 when I met Lee Morrissey. His brother Brendan actually gave me
my first mohawk. I went to my first JC show the same year I believe...
a Gang Green concert. I can still hear "Skate to Hell" playing. I can't
remember the name of the girl I went to the show with, but I only saw her
once after that and she was married and being beat by her husband at that
time. Anyway, I met Bryna at a JC show as well. I was ripped on Fosters,
in the pit, and getting stomped. She dragged me out and took me in for
the night. That was the beginning of a great friendship which I hold dear
to this day. I saw lots of bands at the JC, as everyone did..I even remember
seeing the Rollins Band when they first formed. I think there were maybe
10 people at the show. LOL They sucked. Mentors, Black Flag, etc.....saw
them all at the JC. The JC was a rare experience, and like the Hippie Movement,
if you weren't there, you simply weren't truly alive. Jake
p.s. As an aside, I've been toying with the idea of a JC radio show, playing
lots of old hardcore, local bands etc. who were JC material. What do you
think?

Que pasa people? Victor Garcia-Rivera here from
sunny Miami, Florida. Got a phone call last night from Bill Leist.
Had a good time chewing the fat with old Billy,
lamenting the current state of music and longing for a "time machine" to
go back to that seedy but wonderful "Way Back When" [oye Bill, when you
find that machine, give me a call!] Bill and I discussed the idea of doing
a show the next couple of months in Cincy, maybe at Southgate House or
possibly elsewhere. No, this is not a "Jockey Club" reunion redux. When
I was in Cincy in December, some folks asked me why I didn't play with
The Edge, at the last shindig, or go to the last reunion. Without getting
bogged down in details, politics played a big part in who got to play,
according to Billy, and I drew the short straw. But as much as he enjoyed
the last reunion, Bill confided he would love to do a show with the people
who played in what we'll call the "Spirit of '77" bands, for lack of a
better term. That includes our bands {the Edge, The Reduced] as well as
Snare and the Idiots, SS20, and others in what Bill loosely terms "slop
gut-bucket rock n roll". So we're in the process of getting it together.
It's a bit complicated, seeing as how I have to make a 1000 mile trek to
do this [no big deal for yours truly, I logged 300,000 miles in the infamous
"Edgemobile" van in the 1980s playing in dozens of states and provinces
of North America], plus I was planning to visit family in Cincy this spring.
So this is a curtain call for all you old rock and rollers who were part
of our scene back then and who want to join in- contact Bill or me if you're
interested. We may even have some kind of jam session at the end. It'll
be loose, it'll be fun, and it WILL rock like the JC of old. By the way,
due to the difficulties of lugging heavy musical equipment a thousand miles,
we may need to borrow backlines and maybe a drum kit, so if any volunteers
are out there, get in touch. Hopefully, we'll get the JC "non-reunion"
going sometime in April or May [providing there are no more riots in Cincinnati,
of course]. For those who want to know what I'm up to now- check out my
current band's web page: http://members.aol.com/lastgangintown If you liked
what I did with the Edge, you'll likely dig Last Gang In Town. By the way,
we have a VINYL single coming out in the Spring! I also have a web page
up for the Edge, with some photos, discographies, etc. [I'll be expanding
it soon to include photos from the JC]: http://members.aol.com/roquero/edge.html
I found out recently that a Japanese band covered one of my songs from
the first Edge record. They are called "Tom And The Boot Boys"- an Oi band
from Japan! The Edge song they covered was "Leave Home", and it is on a
split 10" record with the Dropkick Murphys on the other side, on the TKO
Records label [hey TKO Records- where are my royalties???????] I can't
tell if they are singing in Japanese, or just mumbling the words real fast
[their version is almost thrash metal, kinda like early DRI, whom the Edge
opened for on their first JC appearance way back in May, 1984] It's kinda
humorous when a band on the other side of the world covers what I consider
to be one of the worst songs I ever wrote, but it's a freak show, ain't
it? Oh, and Greg Cull- if you are lurking out there- you sent me an Instant
Message a couple years ago- if you're not still on the lam, see if you
can play this show with us [Greg was the infamous Harmonica player for
the late lamented Boondocks, but better known as the "T-Shirt guy" who
made all those classic Jockey Club Tees, as well as T-Shirts for The Edge,
SS 20, and many more!] Hasta luego, amigos- Victor
