PREPRODUCTION ART
Page ONE
These are interesting pictures
of some of the art that went into the development and animation of The
Iron Giant. According to Brad Bird, Joe Johnston (of Star Wars, Rocketeer,
and Jurassic Park 3 fame) came up with the design that became the giant,
but Mark Whiting seems to have made much of the final design along with
Tony Fucile and Steve Markowski. It would be interesting to learn
who did what and how much of it came about...

I love art like this. Seeing the purer vision as it developed, setting
the mood for the rest of the artists involved. This was done by Mark
Whiting with the intent of capturing Brad Bird's vision, and influenced
the combo design of Joe Johnston's and Mark's that you can see over on
Page FOUR. Great picture!
This is what is known as a modeling
sheet, though it has other names. Directors and Designers use them
to keep all of the drawings of a certain character consistent, because
usually there is a team of animators working on each individual character.
If you're interested in animation, I strongly suggest working on your own
modeling sheets so you know what each angle and expression looks like.

Hysterical! And another example
of what it takes to create a shot of just a few seconds. Often lead
animators will create a series of steps to get a character through a certain
action, and other animators fill in the blanks. And our mind does
the rest!
