I had never experienced the death of a police officer in the line of duty until December 6, 1997 when Police Officer Daniel J. Pope and Police Specialist Ronald D. Jeter were killed in the line of duty. Dan Pope and I went through the police academy together and worked in District Four together. This page is dedicated in their memory and to the memory of all police officers killed in the line of duty.

At approximately 11:55 P.M. on Friday, December 5th, 1997, two plainclothes Cincinnati Police Officers, assigned to the Robbery Task Force, were shot to death while attempting to serve a felony warrant at #23 Hollister Street, Cincinnati, Ohio.  Officer Daniel Pope, 35 years of age and a 6-year veteran, and Specialist Ronald Jeter, 34 years of age and a 4-year veteran, made the ultimate sacrifice for their community.

The person responsible for this tragic incident, Alonzo Davenport, administered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and committed suicide shortly after he murdered the police officers.

The last time two Cincinnati Police Officers were killed in the line of duty at the same time was 1979 when Police Officer Robert Seiffert and Police Officer Dennis Bennington were killed.

On September 1, 2000 at approximately 12:45 AM, Police Officer Kevin Crayon attempted to stop a 12 year old boy who was driving erratically.  Police Officer Crayon asked the boy for his identification.  The boy refused and began to drive off in the vehicle.  Police Officer Crayon reached into the vehicle in an attempt to turn off the engine.  He became entangled and was dragged 800 feet to his death.  Police Officer Crayon was able to fire a shot at the suspect, striking him in the chest.  The suspect fled the scene and was apprehended at his father's house where he had stolen the vehicle.  The suspect was transported to the hospital where he later died.  Police Officer Crayon was a four year veteran and leaves three teen age children.
