Andy Kaufmann (Jim Carrey) is a comedian. An eccentric, bizarre, weird, never before seen sort of comedian - but quite possibly brilliant according to his agent George Shapiro (Danny DeVito). The movie chronicles Kaufmann's life and career, an arc that would include appearances on Saturday Night Live, a stint on the highly-popular sitcom 'Taxi', and a public battle of words and fists with professional wrestler Jerry Lawler (himself). Along the way, Kaufmann's commitment to avant garde humor make him tough to cast and tougher to control, while off-screen he and his female companion Lynne Margulies (Courtney Love) fall in and out of their relationship. By the end, as Kaufmann battles the cancer that would eventually take his life, questions of honesty, showmanship, and sticking with a joke when no one else gets it all come back onto Andy and his circle.
