Project: Set Design: "Screen" and "White box"

Description:

Another set design. Included on this page are images from two different projects. In the first project we were to create a folding screen that could be used as a set piece. In the second project we were to create a "white box." The idea of the white box is the inverse of the black box in theater. With the white box we were to create a room that could have some surface deliniation but was painted all white. No set pieces could be placed in the space. Any type of imagery had to be painted onto the surfaces of the box. I chose to do both projects using one of my favorite childhood stories: Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

Screen project. I drew the image on the vellum screen using Maurice Sendak's artwork.

When lit from behind, Wild Things appear! I created the Wild Thing stencils from the artwork in the book.
