Held at Fawcett Center
1-800-637-2316 MARCH 7-13 1999. CELEBRATE DARW - DENTAL ASSISTANT RECOGNITION WEEK! LEGISLATIVE UPDATE House Bill 470, the proposed hygiene supervision bill that includes allowing "basic qualified personnel" to perform coronal polishing, seems destined to die in committee. Hygienists would agree to compromise only to delegate to a certified assistant. the dentists want no compromise on that issue. Both sides want hygienists to practice without the dentist being physically present, however, the dentists feel there are too many restrictions, and the hygienists are opposed to the delegation of coronal polishing at all. With the elections coming and legislators anxious to campaign, we see no resolution to the bill. The proposed increase of delegable duties has made it to the OSDB, and have been placed in the Laws and Rules Review process for consideration. Discussion about these issues is planned in January. If you have concerns or input you feel may be helpful to the Board members, Write to Dr. Eleanore Awadalla, Pres. OSBD, 77 High St. Columbus, OH 43266-0306. ODAA has three representatives that attend the meetings. They are lobbying for more recognition of certification as a level of skill, and delegation of duties to only those assistants that have achieved either the state or DANB credential. There is also discussion within the OSDB regarding licensing of expanded functions dental assistants to require them to maintain continuing education. They did not realize that re not required to maintain certification after completing the EFDA training, but had to be certified to apply for the course. This will be addressed with the same meeting in January. There is logic to licensing certified assistants as well, which could be an answer to all dentists that ask, "Where can I find a well-trained assistant?". The OSDB needs your input.
