They have also expanded their scope of topics that are directly related to the delivery of patient services. It was a meeting of the minds! ODAA, ODA, ODEFA, ODHA, OSDB summit was a success. The ODAA's Immediate Past President, Susan Hauenstein, CDA, made her dream of the first Ohio Dental Team Summit become a reality on June 13, 1998 because of her determination and organization. Representatives from he Ohio Dental Association, the Ohio Dental Assistants Association, the Ohio Dental Expanded Functions Association, the Ohio Dental Hygienists Association and the Ohio State Dental Board participated in an organized forum facilitated by Peggy Hegbar of Windward Seminars. Ms. Hegbar utilized suggestions submitted by the forum attendees before the actual scheduled meeting to create a platform of discussion. Each organization rated the three topics they felt had the most importance to dentistry, and formulated questions to be directed to other organizations. Many of the topics were inter-related, and worthy of discussion, however, it was unanimously felt that the proposed new duties were the most pressing of the topics suggested, and they became the starting point. As an ODAA representative, I found the equal input between organizations refreshing, and felt that each dental team member realized to a greater degree, how strongly education, continuing education and testing are valued. The shared visions of required education and testing demonstrated throughout the forum, but equally vocalized were the possibilities of compromise. Because of time constraints, other topics that should be addressed, such as curbing tobacco use among teens, and quality dental team members, were unable to be addressed. Those attending felt another meeting would be advantageous, and a January 1999 date has been proposed. Still to be determined are the costs involved, and how responsibility for those would be handled. Because ODAA felt so strongly that the meeting was needed, this organization sponsored and financed this first venture.
