MOONVILLE, OHIO

LOCATED DEEP IN THE ZALESKI FOREST IN OHIO NEAR THE LAKE HOPE STATE PARK, THE MOONVILLE TUNNEL IS ALL THAT REMAINS FROM A SMALL MINING TOWN THAT EXSISTED IN THE LATE 1850'S. FOR NEARLY 100 YEARS FOLKS HAVE SAID THAT THE MOONVILLE TUNNEL IS HAUNTED BY SEVERAL GHOSTS.

This is the group of people who went with me on my trek to find the Moonville Tunnel
here they are all standing before the huge entrance to the train tunnel.

THE HISTORY OF MOONVILLE

In the late 1850's the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad (M&C RAILROAD) was constantly striving
to the west to reach the Cincinnati Area. The owner at the time was looking for ways to keep himself out of
debt, so he made a deal with a man by the name of Samuel Coe. He allowed the M&C RAILROAD to be built through
his property, he did this so he could use the train to haul out coal and clay that was on his property. As
the railroad was constructed Coe began opening mines on his property, and soon people came to the area searching
for work. This is how the small town of MOONVILLE began.

I have heard that in it's prime the small town of Moonville only had about 50-65 people. The area was harsh terrain,
and very hilly. Some folk say the small town only had about four real buildings besides the houses that were sparsly
scattered about the area. The town had a schoolhouse, a post office, a general store, and a railroad depot. Today
all of these buildings are long gone, except for a cematary (where some of the Moonville people are buried) and a
few house foundations. There was also one Saloon, and the town people would often walk the railroad tracks to get
to it. But the one thing that remains today that you can still see, is the haunted Moonville Tunnel.

Once you find the train tracks that lead to the tunnel, you have to cross a creek known as the Racoon Creek.
This is not too bad as long as you can keep your balance while hopping over the creek rocks.

The Pillars that hold the train tracks

These Giant Pillars of concrete once held the train tracks as they went over the
racoon creek, Today the tracks are gone, but these huge structures remain standing.
I was told by a local that kids come here in the summer to dive off the pillars into a deep
water hole in the creek.

Tall pic of one of the giant pillars that used to hold the train tracks as they crossed the creek

Here is a shot of one of the pillars that once held the train tracks, I took this picture
just after I had crossed over the creek, as you can tell, it is very big!

From what I could tell, the tunnel was constructed of all brick, the tunnel is very tall but to me it
did not seem very wide, although it is carved into a mountain hillside. The drive to Moonville, was
very scenic, and kinda long. You drive on alot of backroads that eventually turn into simply a gravel path.

Picture of me sitting on top of the Moonville Tunnel!

I climbed to the top of the tunnels entrance, as you can tell the tunnel is very steep.
if you look very closely behind me you can see a downed telephone pole, I noticed these all
over the area, they are very old.

THE GHOST STORIES!!

Now I have heard many different stories about the ghost of the moonville tunnel,
but the stories go back as far as 100 years ago. Many people believe that
there are two ghosts that haunt the area, not just one. The most popular
versions of the stories are of a headless figure who walks around inside
the tunnel and around the area waving a yellow lantern in an effort to stop
the train. The other story is of a woman in a night gown seen wondering
around the area of the tracks at night.

On my visit to Moonville, as we were about to cross the raccon creek, I
encountered a forest park ranger and interviewed him on my camcorder, he
told me that the ghost of the man who haunts the tunnel was a train conductor
who was drunk and fell in front of the train and was decapitated. Another
theory says that the conductor was having an affair with the brakeman's
wife and he was pushed out of the train and ran over.

Another local told me a story that Moonville was strucken with small pox,
and sent thier most healthy person to the tracks to walk and get help, the fellow
approached the tunnel, he was apparently sick and delerious from the small
pox and staggered in front of an oncoming train waving his yellow lantern,
and was decapitated.

As for stories about the woman, there are documented cases where a woman was
killed about a mile from the tunnel while walking the tracks in 1886. and
though this ghost story is not as popular as the headless ghost from the
tunnel, the park ranger I interviewed did say that people have talked of
a ghost that resembled a woman in a blue'ish night gown wandering around
waving his lantern and then dissapearing.

Entrance to the Moonville Tunnel

Although the train tracks are long gone, all that is left is a worn down gravel path that continues like a shadow
mimiking the old train tracks path.As you venture into the tunnels entrance you will see all kinds of scary graffiti
on the walls. here are some pictures of the grafitti.

scary clown painted on the wall

This clown that somebody spay painted on the wall inside the tunnel really freaked us
out, If you have ever seen the movie "IT" by Stephen King, you probably know what
I'm talking about, the whole area of moonville reminded us of that movie!

this is "Pennywise" the clown from "IT"

ME!

This is me armed with only my camcorder and kodak advantix
camera. The park ranger I interviewed told me that we made a
"wise decision" by coming to visit the ghost tunnel during the
daytime hours, all he told me was that "bad things go on out here
at night, and you don't want to be at Moonville at night". So
you can draw your own conclusions from that, besides the ghost
sightings, all I can gather is that devil worshipers probably
hang out here on a regular basis, but that is just what I could
figure, judging by the grafitti inside the tunnel.

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT

I did some digging around on the history of Moonville and stumbled
across this actual article that appeared in

The McArthur Democrat on March 31st, 1859

"A brakesman on the Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad fell from the
cars near Cincinnati Furnace, on last Tuesday March 29, 1859 and
was fatally injured, when the wheels passing over and grinding to
a shapeless mass the greater part of one of his legs. He was taken
on the train to Hamden and Doctors Wolf and Rannells sent for to
perform amputation, but the prostration of the vital energies
was too great to attempt it. The man is probably dead ere this.
The accident resulted from a too free use of liquor."

THE MOONVILLE CEMETARY

Now I had heard stories from people that many of the villagers
who lived in moonville were buried somewhere in the area, so after
checking out the tunnel, we set off in exploration of the cemetary.

Going to the cemetary

Everyone piled in my pickup truck and we scouted out the area and
basically drove up and down the moonville road until we found this
worn out path that kinda curves around way up into the woods.
Since my truck doesn't have 4-wheel drive, I decided it would be
a good idea to park it here and hike up the trail to find the cemetary.

the graveyard!

As we approached the cemetary, I could not help but get the
chills, it was very exciting. this was really scary because as we
got closer I realized that this we an entire family of people
buried around this giant tree on the hill.

The scary tree

The tree was quite amazing to look at, and it was also very scary.

Now If you remember, when I was explaining the history of Moonville I mentioned
that the founder of Moonville was a fellow by the name of Samuel Coe ... Just keep
that in mind as you look at the pictures below!

Now I didn't find the grave of Samuel Coe, but I did find these two, and I am willing to bet they are of close relation to him. And I would also bet money that there are more cemetaries in the area!

gravestone

I noticed that alot of the graves we found were of the last name JONES,
the only ones with last name of COE are pictured above.
Alot of the grave stones had "Asleep With Jesus" imprinted on them.
I also noted that the graves were surprisingly in very good
condition for being well over 100 years old.

THIS IS WHERE THINGS GET CRAZY!!!!

Now I never noticed this before, but someone on the internet emailed me
a while ago and brought this to my attention, if you look in the next
picture, you will see my girlfriend in the red shirt standing near the
big tree in the moonville cemetary... now if you look closely you
will see several FACES IN THE TREES!!! no joke, check it out!!

FACES IN THE TREES!!!!

Still can't see them? well look below, this should clarify it a little more..
now, I promise these pictures have not been altered in any way,
these "faces in the trees" seem to show up on other peoples pics as well..

picture of the ghost?

I snapped a lot of photos around the Moonville cematary and the tunnel
hoping to get something to show up on film, I have been told that ghosts
are sometimes captured on film by cameras. Out of all the pictures I took,
the following picture is the only one to come out "wierd". This was
snapped with 400 speed film with moderate light and no movement
@ about mid afternoon inside the train tunnel.. I can't really
come up with a logic reason for the way it came out except
possible camera malfunction?? or maybe a ghost?? hmmmmm.......

DIRECTIONS TO MOONVILLE

if you are like me and you would
like to see Moonville for yourself, here is how to get there..

Rt. 33 runs east and west from Columbus to Athens Ohio..
Nelsonville is a small town just west of Athens, it also is home to my old
school Hocking College.. If you drive through Nelsonville you will see a
road called Rt. 278 there will be signs pointing to LAKE HOPE STATE PARK..
stay on 278 and follow it past Lake Hope, The first road on your left will
be called WHEELABOUT ROAD.. turn onto this road and stay on it, it will turn
into a gravel path, and just keep following it into the woods and you will
eventually come to a one lane bridge, immediatly after the bridge, the old
train tracks path will actually cross the road, park your car and get out
and follow the tracks to the LEFT,, you will come to the creek, cross the
creek, and the tunnel is about 100 yards up.. To find the cemetary stay on
the gravel path and go past the tracks, about (20 yards) you will see
another gravel path to the RIGHT,, it curves around and takes you to
the cemetary... consult an actual map of the area, or you may get lost
and burn up a lot fuel searching for the tracks and tunnel...dont forget
that the train tracks are gone, it is simply a gravel trail now..

Looks like I have found a copycat.. I was scoping out some of the other Moonville web sites when I came across this site... National Haunted Places Magazine If you notice, the person who made this site copied my entire description of Moonville, and places it as the opening to his site.. hmmm... not too original, I have since wrote him and expressed how unhappy I was about this, feel free to email the webmaster and let him know what you think.. I have personally devoted many hours working on this site and only to have my work copied and posted on some wannabe's website.. This really torks me off.. well just so you all know how I feel.. Ok i am off my soap box now..

Dear sir or ma'am,
I recently noticed your article about Moonville, Ohio. The opening statement is exactly the same as another web site, "Moonville, Oh - The Haunted Train Tunnel" (http://www.home.fuse.net/moonville/). Are you aware that plagiarism is illegal and punishable by law? My suggestion to you is to paraphrase or do your own research. Not only does plagiarising look bad on your part, it also displays a lack of creative and investigative talent. Thank you for taking this into consideration.

It was nice seeing the area around Lake Hope again. I lived outside Logan for 17 yrs, then moved to Arizona 5 yrs ago. When I get back to Ohio, my visits are always too short for sightseeing. I wouldn't be at all surprised that there are ghosts there, I had a couple of incidents in "the hills" myself. Great photos! Sorry about the copycat. Dale

I recently went on a backpacking trip with a buddy of mine to Zaleski. The "designated" camping areas in the park were full of people and we wanted to find some solitude for the night. We headed down into the valley to set up camp near Raccoon creek, about 1/4 mile from the Moonville tunnel. I have heard many stories about the haunted tunnel and the fate of the residents of Moonville but took them as folklore. Well, we camped out near the ruins of Moonville on a beautiful cloudless night. Nothing became of the night really. It was only the two of us, the stars and a rather obnoxious great horned owl. We snapped a few photos of the tunnel and the area where we camped. But when I got the film back, one of the photos came as a surprise to me. It was a photo of me, sitting in front of the campfire. But just in front of me is a large, translucent blur. We had taken several campfire pictures from the same viewpoint in front of the fire. All of the campfire photos were take! within a couple of minutes, but only this one particular photo had the translucent blur. It is not smoke, as the fire was very small and couldn't have possibly produced an image of this size. Although we saw nothing around the tunnel or our campsite that evening, the photo is very strange. Maybe we weren't the only ones there!

I LIKED YOUR STORY IF YOU ARE ABLE TO SCAN THE PIC ANS SEND IT TO ME I WILL POST IT ON THE SITE AND GIVE YOU CREDIT.. THANKS RICH

This is a surprise. When I e-mailed you, a screen popped up and said
there wasn't such an address on yahoo. I'm glad it got through. It was
worth writing even if it didn't get through. "It was a good series of flashbacks."
I've been going to Lake Hope ever since I can remember, and my dad did
the same. Of course it was a lot different then. I was fishing one time
when I was 12 on the end of the first long peninsula about 300 yrs(or so)
past the furnice. There is a 4 ft break in the rock at the end, kind of
like a large seat. It's kind of cool. It was early spring, but it turned
into a warm day. When I was leaning against the rock fishing, I decided
to take my coat off. As I leaned against the rock, I kind of felt cracks
that felt like letters. I didn't care to look, because, what for? Finally
I decided to look, and it was letters. Letters of someone's name...It
was my dad's name. Moss cover most of it, but I rubbed it off as I
was fishing. I couldn't believe it. So I ran all the way to our campsite
and got my dad. That was a couple miles, cause we were kind of towards the
back of the camp ground. Got my dad and walked all the way back down there
and showed him. He got all choked up, which was weird to see, but he was
so choked up because he completely forgot about carving it. His friend
and him were camping on that peninsula when they were 15 yrs old. They both
carved their names in there and made a packed to do all these things. And
according to my dad, they did pretty good. It was a great "father/son" moment
it's a nice story, so I thought I'd tell you. Anyway, thanks for e-mailing
me back. You have a nice web site and I really enjoyed it. Your welcome
to e-mail back and rap awhile if you would like. May the Lord Jesus Christ
Bless you in all you do...Amen.

I use to swim with some friends in the water hole(Raccoon
Creek),just down stream from the tracks.(Late 70's-early 80's) Every now
and then, we would stay down there all night and camp out by the
swimming hole. Sometimes the train would rumble by at night, in pitch black
night you could see fire under the train as it went by, and shinning
running lights out in front. The sound of that huge train going over the
trestle and the pitch black night, and the fire coming out of the train,
and being at Moonville no less, made for some hair raising fun.
Sometimes though, I was wondering what I was doing down there. You would be
surprised how long a night could last.
We "saw" several "things" as a group, "several times" down there
at night, but ain't none of us went to go see what it was... Stay down
there a few nights, you'll see what I mean. Go take a good look and tell
me what the hell that is...I'll sit right here and wait on
ya'..."Good-Bye."

I liked your shots and stories about the Moonville Tunnel. Your
pictures with bare trees were more familiar to me than the ones I
took last May. I used to hunt grouse and rabbits in that area in the
late fall and winter. I didn't go there that much in the late spring
and was never there in the summer. I was an OU student from 1972
through 1975. I graduated in `75. I was back there in 1987 and took
some film photos. I just scanned them and put them on my website.
Go to:

and click on Recent Adventures/Ohio May 2001, or even easier yet, go

I have been lagging on posting my Ohio pictures because I
prioritized other stuff, but I thought you'd get a kick out of the
old pictures. I was seriously bummed when I saw the tracks were
gone. I spent many an hours walking them.

BTW, you have a nasty script on your page. It starts to load and
then some re-direct or whatnot takes over and leads to a dead link.
E-mail me and I'll send you some higher res-versions if you wish.

My name is Jennifer and I'm 16 years old. I've lived in Nelsonville almost my entire life. I also lived in Vinton County with my grandparents for about 2 or 3 years. I know the area very well.My mom and her brothers used to go out to Moonville when they were my age and go swimming all of the time. Me and my boyfriend were out there a couple days ago taking pictures. My friends and I often talk about going to Moonville, usually around Halloween. But we've all heard the ghost stories and know that bad stuff happens up there at night. We've been brave enough to go out there during the day, but never at night. I guess that's our next goal. My uncle and aunt want me to go camping up there with them and some of my friends. That's getting a little too brave. If we ever do decide to go out there, I will take a camera just in case. I think this site is so awesome. Especially because I know about Moonville and have been there a few times. It's great what you've done with this.! I visited the Moonville Tunnel for the

Nothing eventful happened...except that I twisted my

Though my ankle was sore, the walk up the hill to
the tunnel was well worth the pain. I would like to
go back some time during the day and look for the
cemetary and some building foundations.

i would like to tell you a little story about Amzey Kennard. (aka ghost of moonville). my friend is the great granddaughter of Amzey. her mother told us the story a little while back and i thought i would submit since i thought it is interesting myself. well....Amzey worked in coal mines in the late 1920's and was injured. they had to replace part of him skull with a metal plate. after the incident he wasn't all straight in the head. it was mother's day and the Kennard family was all at Amzey's home. it was late morning when he asked his son what time it was. Donald answered Amzey. Amzey said his good-bye's to everyone in the household. the next thing they heard was the horn and screaching of the wheels on the train. i myself have visited moonville many, many of times. i don't find anything spooky about it myself but, however, i'm not superstitious. but i don't doubt anything that these people have seen. but i do not believe that it was done at night ! with a lantern and all that stuff. i do know that Donald had to pick up his fathers body limbs piece by piece and to the day he died he would not speak about it. if you have any questions please contact me at my screenname above. thanks, Jamie

in know this sounds crazy but i am the great granddaughter of Amzey Kennard. a.k.a...ghost of moonville tunnel. reguardless of stories that are usually false my great grandfather was not under the influence of alcohol. i'm going to tell you the TRUE story of what actually happened to Amzey Kennard. (a.k.a) ghost of moonville. in the early 1920's grandpa had a mining accident and had a metal plate inserted into his skull. he was a very well liked man but after that people look at him as if he were queer in thought. in the early 1930's grandpa was diagnosed with what we now know as prostate cancer. he was in a great deal of pain. he was also a conductor and knew exactly what time the trains would arrive. it was mothers day and the whole family was at the Kennards home. he went around and said his good-bye's to everyone in the household. to the day my mother's dad died which is my grandfather he blammed himself for the death of his father (Amzey Kennard). Am! zey Kennard went out to the garden and asked my grandfather what time it was. and my grandfather answered him. knowing when the trains would arrive this was about to happen. the next thing that my grandfather heard was the horn and the screaching of the breaks of the train. as it turns out. it was broad daylight on mother's day that Amzey Kennard commited suicide. and that is the true story of what happened. if you have any questions or comments please contact me at softballgirl44@hotmail.com. thank you. Erin

Fictional ghost stories are fun. However there is no such things and people should just stay away from Moonville and leave it be.

Well it was on may 10, 2001 and we (me and my friend Judy), arrived at moonville, and I was interested in it all. There's alot of history that has been forgotten out there, and a city that use to be there. Anyways we went to a set of tressels and that's where we thought was the entrance to the tunnel, after you crossed the creek, it wasn't. After seeing how the water was raging at this set of tressels we decided that it was to high, and just set out to find the cemetary. We drove back to the ranger station to ask where the cemetary was. they told us. I have family from this area, and i am interested in seeing the cemetary for them reasons. However we drove and drove out that road, and ended up a Uncle Bucks. There is the furgesson cemetary out strait across from there, and we saw it. but it wasn't Moonville. So on the way back out, Judy was talking about the tressels we saw and how they didn't have the writing on them. No grafitti (excuse my spelling). So as were driving back out we saw this other road so we stopped, however another set of tressels (judy knew this was it) and I was curious so I tod judy I wanted to see down by the creek so I would be right back, and i took off down beside the creek, after getting there I was just looking around to see if I could possibly see a path or something to the cemetary, cause I had no idea where it was. So I saw a path that went down along the creek and it looked as if it went up to the road, and I then up across the road to the other side of the road, and over the hill. So decided to follow it. (Judy is still waiting at the top). However I proceeded to following this trail, and I went to step up on this pile of debre that was along the way (where the creek had been up and flooded it), as soon as i went to take a step in process I noticed a snake laying right there. I was already in step, and as soon as my foot landed on that debre, I quickly jumped backwards, well my step had bounced that snake up in the air, because of how the sticks were, so has it was in air, I jumped backwards and screamed, and the snake darted toward me, so before it had even hit the ground i was on route very quickly running all the way up that hill on the path, back up along the tressels-- when I got to the top judy was quickly waiting on me, to make sure everything was ok, cause she heard me scream. Well then I had to walk a little bit to get that horrible feeling out of me, so we walked along the road on the opposite side (railroad bed) just a second for me to relax a minute. Well on our way back to the car, cause I said forget the cemetary I had enough and judy had too, we were exhausted from hunting so long. A sheriff pulls up along the side of us with two deputies inside-- we didn't hesitate to stop cause we weren't doing anything wrong. So the officer gets out of this vechile and asked us what we were doing?? I told him about the snake and that we were hunting for the cemetary. the water was high to see the tunnel. We couldnt' get there and that's what I told the officer well needless to say he had an additude at first and told us how we were tresspassing on private property and that we had to get off of it. So we told him that we didn't know the tunnel was on private property and that we were sorry but we couldn't find the cemetary either. Well being a cemetary anyone has the right to go there, and the one officer spoke up and said well actually it's right there. Looking up the way we saw the over covered road, which was the path I saw at the bottom. Well the one officer was nice enough to ask us if we wanted him to take us up to the road and so we wouldn't pass it. However the other officer, was a little more demanding. He asked us why we were going up there, and Judy explained to him that we are doing family ancestor searches on our families and were just curious of whom was up there. we didn't want to bother anything. Well, the little bossy officer, said well I dont' think it would be a good idea for you to be up there at dark. Judy and I looked at each other, and said ok, we were actually on our way out. (it was not even close to dark). However the cop was like well there are witches that are still going out there, and using the tunnel and graveyard for there ceremonies (religion) or whatever. I laughed and told the officer not to worry that we were leaving I had enough excitement for one day, and we could come out to the cemetary some other time. He was all for that. However we were a hop skip and a jump from the cemetary I wanted to go there so bad, but judy and I didnt' think with the officers being so demanding we should go.the officer made the comment "Well, you DON'T NEED TO BE OUT HERE after dark". Just the way that I heard him say it, and the tone he used seemed more like a warning instead of advice. I due beleive that the deputy was just looking out for our safety. I mean two girls by ourselves and no one else. So yeh maybe demanding but I beleive our safety COULD have been the issue. It was just eery.....!!!!!! It was well before dark were talking four o'clock or so. The one officer didn't have a problem with us going up there, and the other one was just absolutly Not for it. Let's just say it was a very intriging adventure. I am still going to SOMEDAY SEE THAT CEMETARY. If you should have any questions you can ask, and i will explain. There are never HOCKING co. Sheriff's out that far, But we dont' know if when we were at Uncle buck and visted that cemetary if they called the sheriff or if the rangers did when we asked for directions. So who knows. Hopefully useful Dawn Please contact me if you should have any idea's of your own. thanks.

Here I have attached an Aerial Photograph of what Moonville looks like today. I'd aprechiate it if you'd use it on your site. In case you have trouble reading the image (it is all gray) here is a HELPFUL Instruction Kit ^^
[Info on seeing the picture]
On the bottom left corner is an indent in the ground, that is Raccon Creek. A bit further above that are three pillar-like objects. Thats where the old trestle use to be. On each side of this is a dirt path way where the tracks once sat. Also there is a small raised area in the picture where the dirt path 'dissapears' and then 'reappears' on the other side of. That is the Moonville Tunnel.
Hope you enjoyed my small helpful picture. Sorry I did not get a picture of the road but this was the best view of the old trestle and tunnel area I could find. Oh and I will tell you what happens Saturday. I am SOOO excited ^_^

-Danny

Here is the photo submitted to me by Dan Hopkins -
Thanks for the pic Dan.. RICH MOECKEL

Three friends and myself have recently visted Moonville Tunnel.
It was last week, our spring break, and we all went up together and
arrived around 3:23pm. Nothing spooky occured for us at first but
we did find our way to 'Lovers Leap' rock, which is on the other side of
Moonville Tunnel from your directions. We walked a ways and passed
a mysterious park ranger. He wore a mounties hat like a State Trooper's.
One of my freinds approached him and she was shocked when he started
to walk away from her. She said "Hey" a few times but he kept walking
and then went behind a group of trees off the tracks path.
She went to look for him but he just dissapeared. We got a bit
spooked and decided to walk back to the car. When we got back..the same guy
was standing on the bank looking straight ahead as if he were about to
cross the now downed tresle bridge. We crossed Raccoon Creek and
expected him to be there but he wasn't. After that we just left and went back
to Athens and got something to eat. No one really thinks what we saw
was to weird but I wonder, any ghostly park ranger stories about?

Thanks,

-Derick

Two friends and myself went to Moonville Tunnel in early Feburary while it was still rather nippy outside. We found the tunnel with ease but never thought to bring a camera. The time we got to the tunnel was right at/around 1pm in the afternoon and it was just about to snow. The only things we saw were some chipmunks raceing around the ground and a stray faun. However we heard a scream from the tunnel and even thought it maybe some hunter who was hurt or some thing similar. We didn't find anything (creepy as it was) but we did stumble onto, just a bit ways from the tunnel, a large water hole. The was was very still and chilly to the touch. One of my friends, Donal, decided he'd tie a string around a rock and drop the rock in to see how dee
