This is the best general work on British operations on the Northwest Frontier frmo 1847 to 1908. Orders of battle abound. The accounts are short, but crisp and detailed. Believe me when I say this is the basic book everyone who is interested in the NW Frontier needs for the foundation of their library.
This is a translation of the regimental history of the Dromedary Regiment. This most unusal regiment performed numerous tasks, but the most interesting was pursuing the Arabs and Mamelukes into the desert and fighting them there. Imagine 4,000 infantry and cavalry, mercenaries, who having finished a war in Italy and seeking work, are engaged by the Byzantine Emperor to save Anatolia from the Turks. Imagine this tiny band eradicating the Turks and recapturing all of Anatolia for the Emperor. Imagine the Emperor then trying to pay these ferocious warriors with debased currency, murdering their leader, and then telling them to take a hike. Their revenge is amazing and not only is the Byzantine empire ravaged, but the last Frankish kingdom left over from the 1204 Crusade wiped out in a massive battle of armored knights against far clever mercenaries.
The basis of this work is a US military intelligence document that collected and updated data to 10 May 1940. It presents a picture of the organization of many formations, including TO&Es, incliuding tank and anti-tank formations (from materials taken from the French Army Archives), battle formations, operational procedures, etc., etc. The focus is on armored warfare, but it does contain non-armor related information. Amazing data that has never been published or made available to the public before.
Maurice de Saxe led the French Army into Belgium and after the battle of Fontenoy, he began a campaign of reducing various fortresses in Flanders. There is a detailed account of one small actions where a French advance guard is caught in bivouac by an Allied force, which is supported by a map and would make an excellent wargame scenerio. Lots of interesting information about the internal workings of the French Army, how it marched, etc., etc.

The French army was returning from its 1860 campaign in China and, having nothing better to do, decided to conquer Cochin-China, otherwise known as Vietnam. There had been issues earlier, a disastrous French operation against Hue and an ongoing siege of Saigon, but why waste an unemployed army? A mixed force of French line infantry, naval landing parties, naval infantry, and Spanish, including Filipino auxiliary cavalry, set about to conquer a new colony. A complete French order of battle, including all officers, is provided.

This is an unusual study that analyzes the ground and places against that analysis the accounts of this 13th century crusader battle. French knights from norther France under the Count de Montfort, about 1,000 knights and men-at-arms total, engage a Franco-Spanish army of Albegensian heretics, under Pedro II of Spain. This includes an analysis of the tactics employed. Most unusual work. Originially published 1878.
This work examines the environment that the French faces in Mexico during their invasion. There is some discussion of tactics and tactical organization. Much discussion of logistical issues.
On the morning of 1562 two French armies faced off on the plains to the west of Paris. The Royal Catholic army was facing an army of Huguenots. The Huguenot knights and reiters smashed the Catholics, but part of their army, drawn by the prospect of loot charged north to pillage. Meanwhile, the Catholics waited until the right moment, rallied their scattered forces, and launched a decisive counterattack, winning the battle. This work has six maps that show various phases of the battle.
The conquest of Algeria was easy, but holding it became a nightmare. Politicans cut the budget and withdrew troops before Algeria was under control. A religious zealot arose and rallied the tribes. French columns marched around, attacked by thousands of Arab horsemen, who outnumbered them by 10 to 1. Though they survived the battles, they died by the score from poor logistics and political decisions that gave them orders that were impossible to complete in light of the resources at hand. Two sieges, one of which was a horrendous failure. Numerous battles. Orders of battle for the French forces and several columns are included.

This work was written by a Frenchman shortly after the battle and represents a fine example of first hand accounts and pro-French/anti-German propaganda. As it is a wartime work, it was subjected to censoring. It provides, however, a most interesting glimpse into the French mindset of the time.
Written in 1917, this is a most interesting British account that puts a very favorable spin on what was one of the bloodies battles in history. At no time does Robinson mention that 60,000 British soldiers died or were wounded in the first day of this multi-month battle. Otherwise, this work is most interesting because of its account of the first operational use of tanks in combat. Interesting work, but it must be read with caution, as it is wartime propaganda.
Originally published in 1784, this work is the only detailed work in English and one of the few works in any language on this particular war.
In 1917 and 1918 the British had a highly mobile army, mostly horse mounted, which operated in Palestine, fighting the Turks and their German allies. This is a highly detailed work discussing British operations and their eventual victory. Originally published in 1921.
This is a training manual for US Army officers headed for France published in 1917. It was based on French tactics, so it reflects not only the methods used by the US, but also how French troops operated.

Givanni Finati was drafted into the Army of Kingdom of Northern Italy, deserted while serving in Croatia, fled to Albania, boarded a Turkish ship to Egypt, found himself short of cash and joined the Egyptian Army under Mehemed Ali. He then served in Mehemed Ali's campaign against the Wahabbis in the Arabian Peninsula. This is his narrative of his adventures and travels. It is a particularly rare firsthand account of the Egyptian campaign against the Wahabbis, the same guys who flew the aircraft into the Twin Towers on 9/11. This work was originally published in 1880.
After Mehemed Ali sent an army to conquer the Wahabbis in the Arabian Peninsula, he sent another expedition south into Sudan. This is a first-hand account of that expedition, and the author's subsequent travels in Egypt. This work was originally published in 1823.
Mehemed Ali was the Pasha of Egypt. He had commanded the Ottoman Army that attempted to suppress the Greek Revolution and whose fleet was defeated at Navarino. When the Porte renigged on its promises for his support in that operation, he took matters in his own hands and marched on Syria. For such an obscure war, this is an amazingly detailed work. The account of the attack on Acre is the most detailed account of the storming of a fortress I have ever read. If you're interested in the military history of the Ottoman Empire this book is a must. If you're interested in the obscure, again this work is a must. This work was originally published in 1837.
This is an outstanding study of how Jutland was fought, prepared by a professional naval officer as part of the post-war analysis of this decisive battle.
