55.
Joseph (Giuseppe) (Sepl) DEJACO82 was born on 6 Feb 1834 in Campill/Longiarü in Tyrol
(Crownland of Austria) at Seres.
He sent a letter to his brother Franz Dejaco in America on 2 Jun 1903.
He was upset: "About four years ago I sent to you one long letter and
a picture of me and my daughter, Caterina [Dejaco 1868-1949]. I have
told you about our relatives and I want you to write a letter. You have been
away for a long time but you have not sent any letter. I didn't hear from you
for many years. Not even one. I don't know if you have received the letter
with my picture and now I'm going to send you another letter. I hope you will
answer me as soon as possible and tell me why you haven*t written to me. You
are silent. I do not understand why you do not want to know about your family."
He then provided a family update: "My son [Josephus Dejaco 1868-1933]
and all my children [illegible], except Caterina is a nun in Innsbruck. Josephus
got married and wrote a letter to you after the wedding and is living in my house
with [grandchildren] Maria [b.1871], Anna [b.1901], and Elizabet
[b.1903]. My daughter Brigitta [Dejaco b.1873] married a school
teacher [Peter Detomaso] and has one daughter and one son. Elizabeth
[Dejaco b.1871] married a [John.] Evangelist Pescoller, and had a
daughter right away. Everyone is doing and living well. The nun is happy too.
One year ago Maria [Dejaco Costa 1865-1902], my daughter, died and left
four children. Our brother and sisters [illegible] Ludwig [Dejaco 1840-1910]
and Johann [Dejaco 1838-1906] are in Gardenia, Peter [Dejaco 1846-1917]
is in Posteria, Marianna [Dejaco Tschaffert 1851-1929], and Brigitta
Dejaco Pescoller 1842-1923] all struggle to live. Barbara is home from school
due to illness. Marianna [Tschaffert] is a widow and lives in Bolzano.
She works in a restaurant. She is a cook. She is in good health, but she is
getting old and doesn't have the energy like she used to have to work."
Finally he states "I now finish writing my letter with much hope to
hear from you. Two times I have written to you. We cannot see each other on
this earth again, but I hope to receive one of your letters."
He was visited by his brother, Franz Xavier Dejaco in 1909 in Campill/Longiarü,
Tyrol (Crownland of Austria). Grandson Josef Dejaco (b1904) remembered
that visit as he was a little boy at the time. He stated that his grandfather
and Franz Xavier DeJaco spoke Ladinish, and that his granduncle had not forgotten
his mother tongue. This was the last opportunity that the two brothers had to
visit with one another.
