He retired on January 18, 1983. From a Kentucky Post article dated January 19, 1983: RETIRING ARCHITECT HONORED WITH PARTY: Carl Bankemper, probably more than any other living person, has changed the face of northern Kentucky. Bankemper is the architect who designed the Internal Revenue Service center, the St. Pius X parish buildings, the Panorama high-rise apartments, the Covington-Kenton Co. Building, St. Catherine of Siena Church and scores of other public and corporate buildings from California to New York.

In more than three decades of designing, Bankemper worked with a lot of people and made a lot of friends. Almost 200 of them honored him Tuesday night with a surprise dinner party celebrating his retirement. The party was designed by architect Harley Fisk and several other current and former colleagues of Bankemper. The 64-year old honoree looked fit as he accepted congratulations. It seemed fitting that the guests streamed into the Town and Country Restaurant on Dixie Highway, they could look a few hundred yards to the north and see Covington Catholic High School. The designs for Covington Catholic and Newport Catholic in the mid-1950s propelled Bankemper into professional prominence. He went on the design about 20 major buildings for the Diocese of Covington, including the St. Pius X parish complex, St. Vincent de Paul church, St Agnes School and rectory, St. Charles Nursing Home, St. John School and Convent in Carrollton, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Williamsburg.

The guest of honor received plaques from the Kenton County Fiscal Court and from the Northern Kentucky chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and a proclamation from Covington Mayor Bernard Moorman making today Carl Bankemper Day. Bankemper's design for St. Catherine of Sienna church in Ft. Thomas, with its quarter-round arc and triangular theme, was hailed as a new and beautiful development in church architecture in the area when the church was dedicated in 1964. The IRS center in Covington is one of four IRS centers he designed.

Bankemper was born in Bellevue, graduated from Covington Latin School in 1935, served in the Navy during World War II, and married Dorothy Beiser in 1946. They have seven children. Bankemper said he is perhaps proudest of his work on the Boone County Administration Building because it was designed to conform to the historical surroundings. He also said he is also proud of the Covington-Kenton Co. Building. "That building will be standing 100 years from now," he said.

He died on November 29, 1984. His remains lie at rest in the St Mary Cemetery mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell, KY. From his obituary in the Kentucky Post: CARL C. BANKEMPER - Services for Carl C. Bankemper, 66, well-known Northern Kentucky architect, will be at noon Saturday in Saint Agnes Church, Sleepy Hollow Road and Dixie Highway, Fort Wright, Kentucky. He died Thursday at his Park Hills, Kentucky, home. Among the buildings his firm, Bankemper and Associates, designed were the Covington-Kenton County Building on Court Street in Covington; the Boone County Administration Building, Burlington; the Internal Revenue Service Center, Covington; and the Panorama Apartments, a senior citizens high rise in Covington. A native of Bellevue, he was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and the University of Illinois. He was principal architect for LaSalle Institute, Chicago; Saint Francis de Sales High School, Toledo; and Covington Catholic High School. He opened his office in Covington in 1961. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Institute of Architects, Bishop Flaget General Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and past president of Panorama Apartments. A strategic planning process led to the formation of the new governance structure. It calls for a principal that will oversee the day-to-day academic activities of the school as chief operating officer, and a president in the role of chief executive officer in charge of mission achievement, development, fundraising, finances and related activities.
