2 CONT Henry owned the F.P. Van Dyke farm and lands east and south, and William 
2 CONT Merrill, Jr., the railroad quarry farm, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey in  
2 CONT March 1723.  In the town records of Hopewell, New Jersey in 1736 he 
2 CONT recorded a red stray stear, a brown mare colt in January 1748, 3 sheep 
2 CONT -2rams one ewe in March 1756.  In 1730 Henry had been baptised by the 
2 CONT Baptist  church.  On June 19, 1747 at a meeting of the Baptist Church in 
2 CONT Henry's house, Henry was the ordained deacon.  On April 19, 1761 Henry 
2 CONT Oxley, and his daughters Hannah and Rachael dismissed to Catoctan? Church 
2 CONT in Virginia.

2 CONT In an unrecorded deed dated April 30, 1761 (in the possession of Richard 
2 CONT Oxley, Millard Nebraska)  Henry Oxley of the Township of Hopewell, County 
2 CONT of Hunterdon Province of West New  Jersey having made a purchase of land 
2 CONT from John Hough in the County of Loudon Province of Virginia on the south 
2 CONT side of Kitoctan Mountain containing twelve hundred acres of land,  makes 
2 CONT promise to his oldest son Everit Oxley three hundred and fifty acres of

2 CONT An Old Forgotten Graveyard
2 CONT .
2 CONT It Lies In A Clump Of Brush On The Farm of Mr. Dyer Gum In a clump of 
2 CONT brush and surrounded by a few trees there is an old graveyard near 
2 CONT Lucketts, on the western part of the farm now owned by Dyer Gum.  This 
2 CONT graveyard is perhaps one of the oldest in this county judging by the 
2 CONT inscriptions on the few remaining tombstones, which were made out of 
2 CONT branch rock slabs and rudely carved.  This burying spot was the graveyard 
2 CONT of the Oxley family, a family now extinct in this county so far as we can 
2 CONT learn, for on the remaining stones we find these inscription:
2 CONT Henry Oxley, Born 1699, Died 1777;
2 CONT Catherine Oxley, Born, Sept. 14, 1743, died July-1780;
2 CONT Violet Oxley, Born, March 24, 1730, Died May 22, 1774;
2 CONT R. Oxley, Aged 52, died 1771.

2 CONT These graves now lie close beside a new-cut road leading to Stumptown by 
2 CONT a parallel route to the Point of Rocks roads, and it would be interesting

1 NOTE Loudoun TIMES, Leesburg, VA Thurs. afternoon, 14 Oct. 1920: "AN OLD 
2 CONT FORGOTTEN GRAVEYARD" It lies in a clump of brush on the Farm of Mr. Gum: 
2 CONT In a clump of brush and surrounded by a few trees there is an old 
2 CONT Graveyard near Lucketts, on the western part of the farm now owned by Mr. 
2 CONT Dyer Gum. This graveyard is perhaps one of the oldest in this county, 
2 CONT judging by the inscriptions on the few remaining tombstones, which were 
2 CONT made out of branch rock slabs and rudely carved. This burying spot was 
2 CONT the graveyard of the OXLEY FAMILY, a family now extinct in this
2 CONT county so far as we can learn, for on the remaining stones we find these 
2 CONT inscriptions:
2 CONT Henry OXLEY born 1699; died 1777
2 CONT Catherine OXLEY born 14 Sept 1743; died Jul 1780
2 CONT Violet OXLEY born 24 March, 1730; died 22 May 1774
2 CONT R. OXLEY aged 52, died 1771 (I think that aged 52 is a misprint from an 
2 CONT illegible stone)
2 CONT (Note: These tombstones are no longer at this location. They were taken 
2 CONT by a descendant from the midwest and were never returned. The only record 
2 CONT that we now have is this newspaper account.)

1 NOTE Rationale: 
2 CONT I am certain that the Violet Oxley and the R. Oxley spoken of in the 
2 CONT newspaper article are Everett Oxley and Patience. I have seen old river 
2 CONT rock slabs used as tombstones and I know that after two hundred years 
2 CONT most of the scratch marks are very faded and extremely hard to read. I 
2 CONT think that the author of the article misread them. The dates match too 
2 CONT precisely and we know that both Everett and Patience met an untimely 
2 CONT demise. 
2 CONT The families of the other children of Henry Oxley, Sr. are well 
2 CONT documented in Loudoun County. The binding of Jenkins coincides too well 
2 CONT with the death of Patience and the binding of Mary coincides with the 
2 CONT imminent death of Everett.
2 CONT The giving of their children to other tis documented in the decree for 
2 CONT the two twin Orphans, Edith and Everett.
2 CONT Even though Jenkins' name is not in the Saunders Family Bible, his birth
2 CONT date fits in nicely with the children as does Mary's. The page was full 
2 CONT and it may be on another page that we do not have access to. Or it could 
2 CONT have illuded the memory of the person that was writing it. Many times 
2 CONT family bible pages were written long after the fact along about the time 
2 CONT that the writer was near death and wanted to preserve some of their 
2 CONT lineage for posterity. A page of the Clare Family Bible written by Clare
2 CONT Oxley has incomplete and incorrect information for his immediate family 
2 CONT of parents, brothers and sisters.
2 CONT After 20 years of searching, I am convinced that Jenkins was the son of 
2 CONT Everett and Patience Oxley.
2 CONT Am looking for proof of Patience Oxley's maiden name. I understand that 
2 CONT her name is White, daughter of Britton White. Am also looking for proof 
2 CONT of Mary Evrit Oxley's maiden name. She married Henry Oxley, b. 1699 in 
2 CONT New Jersey.
