Obituary of Jane Halley Oxley*
Mrs. Jane Oxley, widow of the late John Scott Oxley, died at the old home near Martin’s Creek, July 17, 1893, aged 82 years, 8 months and 1 day.
She was the daughter of Thompson and Hannah Halley, and was born in Millersburg, Bourbon Co., Kentucky, November 16, 1810. In 1830, with her father's family, she moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana. On September 1, 1831, she was married to Mr. Oxley. In 1841 they came to Iowa, settling near this city where they have maintained a home for more than half a century.
She was the last member of a family of six sisters and two brothers. Of her own family her husband, two sons, and one daughter preceded her in death. There remain two daughters, Mrs. Emeline Gray and Mrs. Georgianna Secrist, and five sons, viz James, Henry, Taylor, Marshall, and Robert, all of whom reside in Marion Township.
She was a Christian woman, a member of the M.E. Church since 1858, when she joined the society on the Springville circuit. The funeral services held on Tuesday at Martin's Creek chapel were largely attended, and were conducted by Rev. D. Crippen, assisted by Rev. Mr. Slingerland, her pastor.
Her death was due to old age, and was hastened by a fall some two months ago. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers. Her memory is blessed. She is buried in Martin's Creek Cemetery.
