Why I believe Jenkins Oxley, b. 1762 in Loudoun County, VA is the son of
Everett Oxley and Patience.
Loudoun County Order Book E. Aug 1770 to Apr 1773, p. 244: 11 Nov. 1771
"Ordered that the Churchwardens of Shelbourne Parish do bind out
according to the law Jenkins Oxley about 8 years old who is to be brought
up in the occupation of a farmer."
Loudoun County Order Book F. 1773-1776, p. 356: 11 Apr. 1774 "Ordered
that the Churchwardes of Shelbourne Parish do bind out Mary OXLEY about 6
years of age to Jane CUMMINGS according tolaw."
Loudoun TIMES, Leesburg, VA Thurs. afternoon, 14 Oct. 1920: "AN OLD
FORGOTTEN GRAVEYARD" It lies in a clump of brush on the Farm of Mr. Gum:
In a clump of brush and surrounded by a few trees there is an old
Graveyard near Lucketts, on the western part of the farm now owned by Mr.
Dyer Gum. This graveyard is perhaps one of the oldest in this county,
judging by the inscriptions on the few remaining tombstones, which were
made out of branch rock slabs and rudely carved. This burying spot was
the graveyard of the OXLEY FAMILY, a family now extinct in this
county so far as we can learn, for on the remaining stones we find these
inscriptions:
Henry OXLEY born 1699; died 1777
Catherine OXLEY born 14 Sept 1743; died Jul 1780
Violet OXLEY born 24 March, 1730; died 22 May 1774
R. OXLEY aged 52, died 1771 (I think that aged 52 is a misprint from an
illegible stone)
(Note: These tombstones are no longer at this location. They were taken
by a descendant from the midwest and were never returned. The only record
that we now have is this newspaper account.)
>From page 605 of the Saunders Family Bible. Copies of which are at the
Thomas Balch Library, 208 W. Market Street, Leesburg, VA 20176. Evritt
Oxley was born Mar 24, 1731Evritt Oxley departed this life 22 May 1774
Patience Oxley was born July 12th 1729 Patience Oxley departed this life
Oct 8th 1771
Also listed are the births of at least some of the children:
Bethany Jan 14th, 1750Jesse Dec 4th, 1752Britten Mar 19th, 1755
Sarah May 16th, 1757Mary July 29th, 1759Patience Nov 9th, 1761
Ede (or Eve) & Evritt Sept 11th, 1767
In another Order Book in Loudoun County:
COURT: This day came before me John SAUNDERS and John OXLEY and each of
them made oath that since they have been appointed guardians of Evert
OXLEY and Edith OXLEY orphans of Everet OXLEY deceased they have not been
able to receive any money or other thing in right of said Orphans or
either of them given under my hand this eighth day of August 1785.

Rationale:
I am certain that the Violet Oxley and the R. Oxley spoken of in the
newspaper article are Everett Oxley and Patience. I have seen old river
rock slabs used as tombstones and I know that after two hundred years
most of the scratch marks are very faded and extremely hard to read. I
think that the author of the article misread them. The dates match too
precisely and we know that both Everett and Patience met an untimely
demise.
The families of the other children of Henry Oxley, Sr. are well
documented in Loudoun County. The binding of Jenkins coincides too well
with the death of Patience and the binding of Mary coincides with the
imminent death of Everett.
The giving of their children to other tis documented in the decree for
the two twin Orphans, Edith and Everett.
Even though Jenkins' name is not in the Saunders Family Bible, his birth
date fits in nicely with the children as does Mary's. The page was full
and it may be on another page that we do not have access to. Or it could
have illuded the memory of the person that was writing it. Many times
family bible pages were written long after the fact along about the time
that the writer was near death and wanted to preserve some of their
lineage for posterity. A page of the Clare Family Bible written by Clare
Oxley has incomplete and incorrect information for his immediate family
of parents, brothers and sisters.
After 20 years of searching, I am convinced that Jenkins was the son of
Everett and Patience Oxley.
Am looking for proof of Patience Oxley's maiden name. I understand that
her name is White, daughter of Britton White. Am also looking for proof
of Mary Evrit Oxley's maiden name. She married Henry Oxley, b. 1699 in
New Jersey.
Thank you.
