[270] 1.) Mary Ann was Sam Stewart's first wife, and was sister of his
second wife, Elizabeth (Clarke?).
2.) In the newspaper obituary of Lillian B. Keller, Mary Ann's name
is given as Mary Ann Clark Stewart. Might the latter's maiden name
have been Clark? In Letter #12, Aunt Carol says that she is pretty
sure that such was the case.

[274] 1.) Place of birth from Census Record #14. Census Record #14 gives
Mary Ann's age as 32, as of 21 July 1870.

[277] 1.) Around April 2000, I queried the Allegheny Co., PA., Register of
Wills and Clerk of Orphan's Court for death records for Solomon
Stewart & Mary Ann Clarke. Nothing was turned up. As they noted,
"prior to 1905, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania did not require the
immediate registration of Birth and Deaths [sic]. Subsequently, many
pre-1905 births and deaths are not officially recorded."

[280] 1.) Mary A. Clarke Stewart's name is given in the 1870 census asNancy.

INDEX

[1201] 1.) "According to Rena's recall, Bert Goodpaster 'traveled to Alaskaduring the Gold Rush times and operated a trading post at Talkeetna. He got sick and died on a trip to Seattle from Alaska" (from SueCochran's "Notes for John.")

2.) Bert came to Alaska circa 1907, according to his deathcertificate.

3.) According to Laurene and E. James Cochran, the Goodpastersiblings all came from either Salem or Harlan township, Warren county,OH. (As told to John C. Pelz, January 1997.)

4.) Talkeetna Historical Society, PO Box 726, Talkeetna, AK, 99676;phone (907) 733- 2487.

5.) According to SOURCE #49, Bert was surrendered by Infirmarydirectors to the county Orphanage, and admitted on 12 Dec 1874, listedas an orphan. No parents listed!!! He was taken on trial by SamuelWatkins of Morrow, 6 Aug 1878 (?) [this part of the copy is difficultto read]; indentured to Samuel H. Watkinson [sic--I think the sameperson is referred to here], 29 Aug 1878; and out of the Orphanage on12 Aug 1884 (?) [12 Aug is clear enough; the year is difficult to makeout]. Bert appears is enumerated in the Samuel Watkins household inSalem twp. in the 1880 Ohio census.

6.) According to the 1920 Alaska census and his death certificate,Bert did not marry, and had no children.

7.) As of November 2005, I am accepting his given/legal name asBartlet J. Goodpaster, as that is how it appears on his calling cardin a scrapbook given to me by Mary Laurine Cochran. This book wasgiven to her by Elvira Cochran Beedle, and it may have originallybelonged to Myrtle Goodpaster Beedle.

[1215] 1.) According to his death certificate, Bert Goodpaster was employedby the N.C. Company. His occupation given on the certificate issomewhat difficult to make out, but it appears to read "miner &trader." In the 1910 Alaska census, his occupation is listed as "goldprospector" -- a trapper in the fur trade, according to the 1920Alaska census.

[1205] 1.) I found numerous Goodpaster households located in Salem townshipin the 1850 Ohio federal census index. A certain Bartlet Goodpasterwas mentioned in that index.
2.) One "Bark" Goodpaster, age 5, and one "Clarinda" Goodpaster, age8, are listed as paupers and residents of the Warren County Infirmaryin East Turtlecreek Twp. in the 1870 Ohio census (page 472a). Thetime-frame and similarity in names roughly match those of theindividuals known to me as Caroline ("Callie") and Bartley ("UncleBert"). The ages given in the census, however, push Bert's YOB backto circa 1865, and Callie's to circa 1862. I am fairly certain thatthis census record describes Bert & Callie Goodpaster.
3.) According to the YOD and AAD given in Bert's death certificate, his YOB was circa 1864.
4.) Bert's DOB given in the 1910 Alaska census is January 1870, andhis age as 39 (as of 12/31/1909). His age in the 1920 Alaska censusis given as 54. I tend to think that the 1910 census is more likelywrong, as Bert's death certificate, as well as his enumerations in the1870, 1880, and 1920 censuses all point to a YOB of circa 1865.

[1211] 1.) Cemetery of burial taken from "Database Tracking Report forAnchorage Memorial Park Cemetery." According to this source, Bert isburied at: tract 7, lot 15, lot description NH.
2.) The above source gives a burial-date of 17 July 1937. In lightof information given in Uncle Bert's obituary, the latter date isincorrect. According to the obit, his burial was delayed pendinginstructions of Bert's friends outside of Anchorage, and was buried 27July 1937.

[1218] 1.) Iowa and Pennsylvania are the given states of birth for theparents of Bert Goodpaster. I have no idea how to account for this.It is either true (and all other sources to the contrary--that is,Ohio--are false; which seems unlikely), or false (maybe crusty oldsourdough Uncle Bert didn't want some guv'ment worker buttin' into hisown personal business).

[1220] 1.) In this census, Bert (listed as "Bark") & Callie ("Clarinda") aredescribed as paupers.

[1226] 1.) Uncle Bert's name has been spelled in various ways according todifferent sources. Warren county Infirmary records give his name asBartley. The 1880 census for Salem twp., Warren county, and in whichUncle Bert is enumerated in the Samuel Watkins household, gave hisname as Bart. The 1870 census for the Warren County Infirmary (E.Turtlecreek twp.) gives his name as Bark. (And Callie's as Clarinda.)In all 1910 and 1920 Alaska censuses, and in our family in general, hehas always been known as Bert.
I feel that his given name may have been Bartlet J. Goodpaster;it is possible that his first name may have been spelled with an extra"T" at the end, i.e.- Bartlett. My source for this assumption is acalling card of Uncle Bert's that I found in a scrap-book that LaurineCochran gave to me, and which I believe belonged to Myrtle GoodpasterBeedle, and that was passed down to Elvira Beedle Cochran and then toLaurine Cochran.
On the third-to-last page of the book is a two-page collection ofcalling cards. (In which Callie's & Bert's cards appear, but notMyrtle's, which is what leads me to suspect that the scrap-book mayhave belonged to Myrtle. Also two of the scraps in the book are havecopyrights of 1882 and 1883, which indicates that the scrap-book wasmade no earlier than 1883.) On Uncle Bert's card, his name is givenas "Bartlet J. Goodpaster," and this, I feel, is as close to anyauthoritative source as to Uncle Bert's actual given name as any.
