In Memoriam: John Morrow Cochran 1808-1889
[3135]
1.) Isaac Anderson "emigrated to America previous to the
Revolutionary War, during which struggle for independence he served
for seven years, enlisting as a private and being promoted to a
Lieutenancy. He was severely wounded in the head at the Battle of
Germantown, causing the loss on one eye; he subsequently served in the
Indian war, in which he was taken prisoner by the savages in the
neighborhood of Lawrenceburg, on the Ohio River. His captors took up
their line of march for Montreal, Canada, camping one night on the Big
Miami River. The country around their camp pleased Mr. Anderson so
much that he resolved, if he ever escaped, to locate there, which he
finally did. Some time after their arrival at Montreal, he and a
comrade scaled the walls of their prison and escaped, walking the
whole distance to Philadelphia and suffering untold privations on the
way and subsisting on roots, frogs and anything they could find"

1.) I have a document, kept with the Will of Minnie Dreyer ZIELBAUER,
that is some kind of legal worksheet describing people in Minnie's
will, their residence, life-status, etc. It describes attempts to
track the people down, and what info was turned up. In it, under the
entry of Elsie (Ende) Petschel (Minnie's niece), a Richard E. PETSCHEL
is named. His address, circa 1959-1960 is given as 57 Martens Rd.,
RFD #2, Newport, RI. I infer that at the time he was still alive.
Perhaps he was Elsie's son?
2.) I have seen mention of a Paul and Gertrude Petschel, in Source
#54- Notes of Mary Moss Pelz (photocopied from little brown notebook),
and in a postcard from Grossie to Charles Alfred Pelz, postmarked 10
July 1951 in Buffalo, NY. Grossie signs, "Love, Grossie, Uncle Paul
and Aunt Gertrude." Might Paul, at least, have perhaps been a son of
Elsie Ende Petschel, and Gertrude either his wife or sister?
[663]
1.) YOB is inferred from death record, which gives age at death &
DOD. See sources for "Death Documentation" for Elsie Petschel.
2.) Place of birth from LETTER #11, from Lorna & Ber Boyd.
3.) Exact DOB of pg. 1 of Attached Sheets of Letter #11.
[666] 1.) Possible place of death from page 9 of Letter #11.

1.) Charles A. Pelz once told me that the surname "Moss" was at onetime spelled, "Maas." Perhaps the original, unanglicized Germanspelling?
2.) If the Moss surname was originally (prior to immigration &Anglicization of the spelling) spelled "Maas," I wonder if the Mossesmight not have come from the area of far western present-day (1998)West Germany/east Netherlands? Since beginning to study my genealogy,I have seen the Maas surname several times. If I'm not barking up thewrong tree here, "Maas" seems to be Netherland-ic word. For example,"Maastricht" as in the Maastrict Treaty (as well as the city of thatname). "Maas" forms the prefix of several other place-names inHolland.
