Mrs. J. M Cochran
Dies at Her Home in Ramona California.
The ancients said that "whom the gods love die young." Not all thegood die in youth, but the saying that "death loves a shining mark" isoften verified among us. With a sense of personal loss and greatsadness, the news was received here this week that Mrs. Mary AndersonCochran had departed this life last Monday morning, at her home inSouthern California. While her death was not unlooked for, yet hopeshad been entertained that the climate, to which she had gone only last
autumn, would stay the progress of "the great white plague."
Mrs. Cochran was the daughter of Jerome and the late Mrs. NannieAnderson, who died November 21, 1880. She was married September 16,1896, to Mr. J. Marion Cochran. Two young children, John and Grace, together with her husband, survive her. Her family connection wasvery wide, and great sorrow is felt among them all. Mrs. Cochranpossessed a character which impressed all who came in contact withher, so that to know her was to be her friend. She held high ideals, and constantly strove to attain them, as regard herself and childrenespecially. She had an exceedingly amiable dispostion, and wonfriends everywhere. Yet these was no weakness in her gentleness. Sheaimed for that which was rights, and once convinced, could not beturned from it. For many years she had lived under the shadow of thedisease which terminated her life, but has not been terrified by it.
She felt deep solicitude for her children, as was natural. It waswith the hope of arresting the ravages of disease that the home herewas broken up, and the family removed to California.
To a few who were her most intimate friends Mrs. Cochran revealed adeeply religious side to her nature. She was a baptized member of thePresbyterian church, and when she grew into young womanhood, sheformally united with her mother's church here, in February 1891. Eversince she has been loyal to her church, and constant to the vows shemade on that occasion. She was lovely in her life, and beautifulmemories will ever be associated with her name. We are withoutdetails as to her last moments, but doubt not that she met thebeginning of the higher life with serene joy. Many friends here willmourn her loss, and sincerely sympathize in the grief of otherrelatives.

File No. 201295-09

Dear Mrs. Pelz,
Your recent letter with further reference to your record of birthhas been referred to me for reply.
We regret that you have experienced considerable difficulty butmay we once again verify the contents of the certificate which we havelocated and it is believed to be your certificate of birth, containingcertain errors committed by the attending physician F.H. Frederick whoresided at 1335 Rebecca Street. The certificate we have located ispreserved under our file number 201295-09 and indicates that anunnamed female Moss child was born on January 7, 1909 at 1440 Western
Avenue, Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, in the family of Henry Moss andMary Stewart, mother's maiden name. The information pertaining to thefather indicates that he was a Millworker at the time of birth and wasforty years of age. The mother's information indicates that she was aHousewife, age thirty-eight. The certification of the attendingphysician was completed to indicate that birth occurred on January 7,1909 at 1:00 A.M. This certificate was deposited with our Local

In view of the above it is suggested that steps be taken to amendthis certificate to reflect the correct information as every effort ismade on the part of this office to prevent duplication by way of adelayed certificate of birth.
Enclosed is one of our correction affidavit (sic) forms which ifcompleted in the correct column and signed by you in the presence of anotarizing official and returned to this office together with yourparents' marriage record will serve as the amending document.
Following the amendments as required certified copies may beissued in accordance with the amending certificate. [S134] Letter 4 - S.Fogie > Albert A. Kloss; 30 Mar 1960
Side 1 of this letter was written by Stanton C. Fogie, Attorney atLaw, of Braddock, PA, on 30 Mar 1960 to Albert Kloss, a legateementioned in the Will of Minnie Zielbauer. The purpose of the letterwas to determine whether this Kloss was, in fact, the Albert Klossmentioned in the will. Side 2 is Kloss' handwritten response toFogie, and was presumably written and mailed some time before 13 May1960, the time that Orphan's Court set to take testimony to establishthe identity of the said Albert Kloss.

(Side 2)
Mr. Fogie:
Minnie Zielbauer was my God-mother. She stood for me when I wasbaptized. My aunt on my mother's side, Mrs. Joseph Zielbauer, wasmarried to Minnie's husband's brother. Since Minnie was mygod-mother, I have known her all my life.
My mother, Mrs. Fred Kloss, who lives at 3200 Willett Road inBrentwood, Allegheny county, will verify these statements.
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh - at 22 Junilla St. - until1929 when we moved to 3200 Willett Road in Brentwood. Minnie was thenliving about 2 miles from us on Brownsville Road, operating a bakeshop. I lived in Brentwood until 1947 when I moved to Hamilton, Ohio.
I last saw Minnie 2 years ago when I was visiting my mother.
Please let me know if I must be present in Orphan's Court on May13 to establish my identity.
Respectfully yours, Albert A. Kloss

COCHRAN-RHODES
The "John Clover" of Literature Enters the Clover of Real Life

The following taken from the Cincinnati COMMERCIAL GAZETTE ofThursday, Jan. 23, will be read with a great deal of interest by thereaders of the REVIEW:
Mr. J.M. Cochran, of the COMMERCIAL GAZETTE editorial staff, andnaturally known for his pastoral writings over the no de plume of"John Clover," was married yesterday to Miss Carrie Rhodes, daughterof the Rev. Daniel Rhodes, of Wyoming, at the bride's home; thewedding took place at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
It was a quite affair, of course, or "Jerry" would not have beenin it, and, more[o]ver, the company consisted almost exclusively ofrelatives and connections.
By a happy arrangement of coincidences the day was thethirty-fifth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes, allof whose six children, four sons and a daughter besides the bride,
were present.
Rev. Daniel Thodes, father of the bride, performed the ceremony, assisted by the Rev. Dr. James, of Springdale, O., brother-in-law ofthe groom, and Rev. Dr. Peters, pastor ofthe Wyoming M.E. church.
The bride was a picture in her robe of white crepe de chine withkindred trimmings.
There were numerous presents, many speaking of the aesthetictastes of which Mr. Cochran's friends knew him to be possessed, andothers of the lovely home life in the country which is the "manifestdestiny" of the genial writer and his accomplished bride.
After the wedding dinner, the bride and groom left for the Landof Flowers, and from Florida will go to New Orleans.
Miss Rhodes is a graduate of the High school of this city. Alljoin in extending heartiest congratulations and best wishes for herfuture.

[S270] SCRAP- BOOK (of Myrtle Goodpaster's?)
This is a scrap-book from the late 19th century that Laurine Cochrangave to me circa 2000. I believe that it belonged to MyrtleGoodpaster Beedle, and that she is the person who assembled thescrap-book. It must have been passed down to her daughter, ElviraBeedle Cochran, and then on to Laurine Cochran. Due to a scrap in thebook that bears a copyright date of 1883, I conclude that thescrap-book may have been put together after 1883, and likely by 1899.
On the last 2 full pages of the scrap-book appear a collection ofcalling cards. Cards belonging to Johnsons, Dunhams, Snooks, Beedles, etc. are collected here, and likely indicate a social circle thatMyrtle belonged to. Myrtle's card is notably (to me, at least)absent, while those of her siblings, Callie and Bert, are collectedhere: this fact also leads me to believe that the scrap-book was hers.
A small scrap appearing on page 21 and that bears the inscription,"Reward of Merit. Awarded to Callie Goodpastor by Alfred E. Johnes, teacher," further corroborates the assumption that this scrap-booklikely belonged to Myrtle. (The latter scrap is the only one in thebook, other than the calling cards, that is of a personal nature ormentions any personal names.)

[S271] Letter - from Maria Müller, 10/21/2001
This is a 6-page letter from Maria Müller to me. In this letter, sheenclosed a summary of all the information that she had found since myFeb. 2001 letters to the parishes in Stangengrün and Plohn. [S295] Military Pension for Francis BEEDLE
Full pension file for Francis Beedle, obtained by the through theNational Archives.

This is the pension file for Francis Beedle (ca. 1758 - ca. 1837), whowas a soldier in the Revolutionary War and an early convert to theShaker faith in Warren County.

I received these papers from National Archives as 6 separate pages, with the enclosed note: "We regret that the enclosed photocopies arethe best we were able to obtain using our normal reproduction process. This is caused by the aged and faded conditions of some of thedocuments from which these copies were made."

As a result, certain words are occasionally difficult to make out;such words are indicated by brackets inserted by me. These bracketscontain my guess at the word, or are otherwise described as illegible.

Page 1 was a "brief in the case of Francis Beedle," and, as it merelysummarized the information in the application, I did not transcribe ithere. Therefore, the transcription here starts with page 2. Pages 5 &6 are a letter written in 1858 by Rhoda Mills, Francis Beedle'sdaughter, to the pension officials, requesting that her late father'sundrawn pension be given to her.

(One curiosity is that Rhoda Mills states that her father, FrancisBeedle, joined the Shakers shortly after having his pension allowed in1832. According to Shaker records and Beers' HISTORY OF WARRENCOUNTY, Francis & Polly Beedle joined the Shakers at Union Villageabout April 1805. Hmmmm...)

Much of the original document is one run-on sentence: for the sake oflegibility, all paragraph breaks that follow were inserted by me, JohnPelz:

Dear Sir:

My father, Francis Bedle [sic], was a Soldier in the Indian War of1782--was in "Crawford's Defeat," and received the grant of a pensionas a wounded or disabled soldier, having been wounded and disabledwhile in service of the United States.

Shortly after he received his pension, or having it allowed, he joinedthe "Shakers," and, while being himself unwilling to receive furtherallowances, he expressed the wish that his children should.

I am the widowed daughter of Francis Bedle; and I have respectfully toask what were the last payments to him-- he died about 1837. I will bethankful to receive instructions what proof will be necessary to draw

[page 6]
the pension which he neglected to apply for or draw during hislifetime.

Please address reply to me, to the care of Peter [Zisner?], DelhiP.O., Hamilton County, Ohio.

Very respectfully yours,

Rhoda Mills

[S297] Photo album - very old BEEDLE pictures
This is an old photo album with a rather ornate cover, and is simplymarked "Album" on its spine. Jean Pelz (nee Cochran) says that thisalbum sat in a secretary in the front room for as long as she canremember. The first photo (missing) in this album was of Jesse Beedle(1804-1884) and of wife Sarah Evans, so I would assume that the restof the people in this album -- most of whose names are not listed --would be in-laws, children, & other descendants.
