Rifle
Rifle starts in January and is our most popular discipline.  Shooters learn to shoot standing, kneeling, sitting and prone with target rifles.  No equipment is needed but there is a 50 cent-per-week charge for ammunition.  All shooting is done with .22 rimfire cartridges.  Rifle ends in early April.
Pistol
We shoot pistols in February and March.  Participants must be at least 12 years old and must have participated in rifle for at least one month.  Cost is 50 cents per week for ammunition.
Archery
Fun for all ages, archery begins in the spring when we move outside.  The club owns all necessary equipment, but you can bring your own if you want to.  Archery skills developed in 4-H can be used for hunting, competition, or just for personal enjoyment.  Parents may want to hang out and try their hand shooting with us.  There is no cost for participation (beyond club dues).
Muzzleloading
Muzzleloading also begins in the spring.  We use traditional-styled rifles, pistols and shotguns to experience the shooting traditions of our ancestors.  No equipment is needed and there is no cost for participation.
Shotgun
Shotgun begins in the spring.  We shoot on the trap range at aerial targets.  The club owns guns but participants may also bring their own guns.  Ammunition and clay targets cost about 25 cents per shot, so a night of shooting can cost $2.50-$6.00. You may bring your own store-bought ammunition if you can find it cheaper, but 4-H policy forbids the use of hand loaded ammunition at 4-H events.

Do I need to know how to shoot?    No, our certified instructors can teach you.

Do I need a lot of equipment?          Our club has everything that you will need.

(Comfortable clothes are a good idea.).

Is it hard to learn?                             That depends on your goals.  Recreational

shooting is easy to learn, but some students

become so involved that they want to compete-

learning to become an expert takes a lot longer.

Is it safe?                                             Recreational shooting is one of the safest sports.

4-H shooting takes place only with trained adult

advisors, and our safety record is unblemished.  All

students learn safety rules before they are

allowed to touch a firearm, and are quizzed on the

                                                                 rules regularly.

How much does all this cost?            The club votes on dues each year.  Last year the

dues were $15/ year.  In addition, .22 caliber

ammo costs 50 cents per night.  Shotgun costs

about 25 cents per shell.  Archery and

                                                                 muzzleloading have no extra fees.

How old do I have to be?                  4-H is for youths nine years old to 18, but all third

graders are considered to be nine and anyone who

is 18 on January 1st is considered to be 18 for the

                                                                 entire year.

Do the parents need to be                 No, the parents do not need to be members

members of the BCSC?                      of the Butler County Sportsmen Club or join 4-H.
