The left transept arm is lighted by three lancets showing Marian themes: The central lancet depicts the Holy Spirit, as a dove, above Mary who is crowned and trampling the serpent. Below that, the Nativity is shown. At the bottom of the lancet is Mary's emblem as America's patroness -- the crowned initials MA (mater amabilis, "mother worthy of love"), lilies (purity), and a shield (protector). The left lancet shows the assumption (top), the annunciation (center), and the root of Jesse (bottom). The right lancet depicts Mary's coronation (top), the presentation of Jesus in the temple (center), and the Ark of the Covenant (bottom).
