Fly Fishing

If it isn't obvious, one of my favorite hobbies is fly fishing.  I enjoy all aspects of the sport, including the preparation, the scenery, the beautiful fish, and the magical feeling of wondering what might be lurking in the next pool.

I included the quote at the left because it summarizes very well part of the reason why I love fishing so much.  The quote eludes to a more basic need which fishing satisfies:  it is an escape.  Some people escape with drugs, alcohol, or other vices, but as my wife so eloquently states, "If my husband is going to have a vice, I'm glad it is attached to his fly-tying bench."

I do tie my own flies, and I enjoy it very much.  I am into tying classic atlantic salmon flies which can take me a week to finish, and can also get into production mode and tie several dozen trout flies in an evening.  I like to tie both hard-body and deer-hair poppers, and love to experiment and to "match the hatch."  Fly-tying also helps keep me connected to the sport during the off-season.

As a friend of mine says, it is a disease.  I don't want to be cured.

It's never too early to get them started.

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful . . . because , in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience. . . ."
