Ok..let us back up a moment. Back in the late 50s,early 60s, there was a jug band player named John B Sebastian who played in a group called the mugwumps. The group broke up and migrated west, with various members forming the Mamas and the Papas, the Byrds, and the Loving Spoonful. After a few years with the Loving Spoonful, John moved to Chicken Flats and did the occasional solo piece.
Some years later he was asked to write the theme song for a show about high school, based on the teacher being the hero. The theme,Welcome Back, became a fairly good size hit. The show,Welcome Back Kotter, became a fairly popular show for 2-3 years. One of the characters in the show was combination punk/clown named Vinnie. The character was played by a newcomer named John Travolta.
As it turned out, John was also a dancer of sorts. And when the show ended he was offered an ice cream suit and the role in a medium budget movie called "Saturday Night Fever". The theme was Not written by John Sebastian. Instead, it was written by a group of brothers mostly known for folk-rock named the BeeGees.
Thus did disco sweep the land with the feel of polyester. And rock and roll did not die,but it do go into a coma. And when it came out of the coma like John Smith it was totally different. But that is a story for another time.
