(yellow-building, blue-complete, white-to go)
The FAA requires that you log the construction of your kit plane. These requirements are specified in AC-20-27E. Other than requiring construction photographs, it does not specify the detail needed in the log. The function of your construction log is to provide convincing evidence that you constructed at least 51% of the airplane.
Most builders log
the time they spend constructing their airplane, and the methods used by these
builders vary widely. Some log all time spent thinking about the project,
studying plans, making the numerous trips to the local aircraft material supply
house (Home Depot, Harbor Freight, etc.), as well as constructing the plane.
Some log only the time used in construction. I will be logging only
the days & time I spend actually building N7676D.
