EMAVS, or ElectroMagnetic Anomaly Vision System, is a revolutionary new sensory system. By detecting variations in electrical and magnetic fields within a given area and translating those variations into an optical signal, it is possible to see in a way previously unthought of.
While this system has no routine use, it does afford some unusual abilities. First, a character using EMAVS has a limited ability to see through walls and other common barriers. For perception tests involving this use, divide the barrier rating that the character is attempting to see through by two and add this number to the perception test target number. While more than one barrier can be seen through in this fashion (all with cumulative barrier modifiers), it is not possible to see through a metal barrier or a barrier of conductive material (as the signal is shielded by the barrier).
EMAVS can also detect certain phenomena that would otherwise be undetectable by normal sight. EMAVS enables a character to see anyone using a light-piping device (such as armor or clothing coated with ruthenium polymers), as well as paranormal creatures that have the ability to bend light around themselves (such as the bandersnatch). There are no modifiers when perceiving such anomalies.
This vision system does have its drawbacks. Although there are no lighting condition modifiers while under EMAVS, any action attempted (other than simple walking) imposes a +2 modifier. This is due to the fact that the optical signal produced doesn't necessarily correlate with the "physical" world but rather magnetic and electrical "field lines." This means that combat rolls, running, skills tests, and even magical tests are at +2. Combat pool is also reduced by half while using this system (to reflect a loss of relation with the immediate environment, imposing a penalty to offensive and defensive posture).
Weapons combat may also be adjusted as a result of using EMAVS. No optical combat systems may be utilized (scopes, laser sights, etc). Smartlinks may be used, though, but not smartgoggles. Although EMAVS is not subject to environmental modifiers, a high level electromagnetic field can act as a significant "visual" modifier (gamemaster's discretion). Also, high levels of ferromagnetic metals can disrupt vision in a similar fashion.
