The audio spectrum analyzer is a piece of cyberware that breaks down the signal received by the ear into its individual frequency components. Both the frequency and relative strength of each component are indicated.
Although not an extremely helpful piece of cyberware by itself, the spectrum analyzer, when used in conjunction with other pieces of cyberware, can provide some extremely useful information. By itself, the spectrum analyzer can be used with a harmonic matching program (40 MP/6,000 Y) to identify common (and some not-so-common) sounds that the character might be hearing. The program can either be present in headware memory or the sampled sound must be output through a datajack. Regardless of which method is used, to view spectra output or the results from an analysis program requires a display link or an encephalon.
When used in conjunction with a select sound filter, the audio spectrum analyzer becomes an amazing piece of cyberware. The audio spectrum analyzer is capable of handling part of the load of signal deconvolusion, providing the select sound filter with specific frequency bands to cut and boost. This acts not only to add dice for filtering attempts, but also lowers the target number of the filter task being attempted.

[Yeah, old man Falstaff. He
still runnin' recon out there?]
Forlock
[No. It seems that he
was concentrating so hard on filtering out everything but seismic anomalies
one night that he didn't even notice the yellowjacket in stealth mode swinging
into line behind him. It seems that the cannon shots were close enough
to seismic anomalies to catch his attention. Unfortunately, after a couple
of seconds they caught more than just his attention.]

[Guess it pays to rely
on more than just seismic anomalies when looking for someone who might
want to geek you.]
